Patrick descended the steps slowly.
Two armed men followed.
Dominic moved Chloe behind him.
“Let her go.”
Patrick smiled.
“She isn't restrained.”
“You know what I mean.”
“I do.”
Patrick's gaze settled on Chloe.
“And that's why this is so disappointing.”
Chloe's throat tightened.
“You've caused an incredible amount of trouble for someone who mostly schedules meetings.”
She forced herself to answer.
“I'm efficient.”
Patrick laughed.
Even Dominic almost reacted.
“That's what he likes about you?”
Chloe said nothing.
Patrick looked at Dominic.
“Or is it something else?”
“Keep her out of it.”
“There it is again.”
Patrick tilted his head.
“Dominic Russo, begging.”
“I'm not begging.”
“No?”
Patrick raised his gun toward Chloe.
Dominic stepped forward instantly.
Patrick smiled.
“That looks like begging.”
“Patrick.”
The warning in Dominic's voice could have frozen fire.
Patrick's expression changed.
“For years, I wondered what could break you.”
He moved closer.
“Money? No. Territory? No. Reputation? You barely care.”
His gaze returned to Chloe.
“Then she arrived.”
Chloe's stomach twisted.
“She walks into the office in those boring little sweaters. Makes your coffee. Fixes your calendar.”
Patrick laughed.
“And suddenly Dominic Russo starts leaving meetings early because his assistant hasn't eaten lunch.”
Chloe looked at Dominic.
He didn't deny it.
Patrick continued.
“Do you know he had security follow you home your first month?”
Chloe stared.
“What?”
Dominic's jaw tightened.
“Patrick.”
“Oh, she didn't know?”
“Why?” Chloe whispered.
Dominic looked at her.
“You were mugged outside the office your second week.”
Chloe remembered.
A man had stolen her purse.
Security had somehow recovered it the next morning.
“You did that?”
“Yes.”
Patrick rolled his eyes.
“Adorable.”
Dominic's gaze remained on Chloe.
“You were afraid afterward.”
“So you had someone follow me?”
“For three weeks.”
Chloe should have been furious.
Some part of her was.
Another part understood the man in front of her better than she wanted to.
“You could have told me.”
“Yes.”
“Why didn't you?”
“Because you would have told me to stop.”
She almost laughed.
“You're impossible.”
Patrick snapped.
“Enough.”
He pointed the gun toward the laptop.
“Give me the drive.”
Dominic didn't move.
“Then what?”
“I leave.”
“You expect me to believe that?”
“No.”
Patrick smiled.
“But you don't have options.”
Dominic looked toward Chloe.
Something passed between them.
A question.
She didn't understand.
Then she saw his eyes flick toward the edge of the pool.
An old maintenance panel.
Chloe remembered Marco's instructions from earlier.
If anything happens, create distance.
Dominic turned back to Patrick.
“You killed Gabriel.”
Patrick's smile faded.
“He made his choice.”
“He trusted you.”
“He pitied me.”
“You were family.”
Patrick's face twisted.
“Family?”
For the first time, real emotion surfaced.
“My father spent his life standing behind yours. Every room we entered, I was second. Every decision, you were heir.”
“So you killed Gabriel?”
“He found out too much.”
Patrick's voice cracked.
“He was going to destroy everything.”
“No,” Dominic said. “He was going to expose you.”
Patrick raised the gun.
“And now I correct his mistake.”
Chloe moved.
She grabbed the metal lid from the box and threw it toward the overhead lights.
Patrick flinched.
Dominic lunged.
Gunfire exploded.
Chloe ran toward the maintenance panel.
One of Patrick's men grabbed her sweater.
She screamed and elbowed backward.
The fabric ripped.
She fell.
A shot cracked.
The man collapsed beside her.
Marco appeared at the doorway.
Security flooded the room.
Patrick fought Dominic near the bottom of the pool.
Neither man had a gun now.
Patrick swung.
Dominic blocked.
Drove him backward.
Patrick hit the wall.
Dominic punched him once.
Twice.
Again.
Patrick fell.
Dominic kept going.
“Dominic!”
Chloe's scream stopped him.
He stood over Patrick, fist raised.
Blood streaked his knuckles.
Patrick laughed weakly.
“Do it.”
Dominic's breathing was ragged.
“Become him.”
Gabriel's words seemed to fill the room.
Don't become Father trying to avenge me.
Dominic slowly lowered his fist.
“No.”
Patrick's smile disappeared.
Dominic stepped back.
“You get to live with losing everything.”
Police arrested Patrick Russo at sunrise.
The evidence on Gabriel's drive reached federal investigators before anyone could make it disappear.
Patrick was charged with conspiracy, murder, money laundering, obstruction, and multiple other crimes.
Elena Voss accepted immunity in exchange for testimony.
The Russo empire cracked open.
And Dominic voluntarily handed prosecutors records of his own illegal operations.
Chloe stared at him when he told her.
“You did what?”
They were standing in his penthouse kitchen.
“I made a deal.”
“You confessed?”
“To certain operations, yes.”
“Why?”
Dominic looked toward the city.
“Gabriel asked me to build something better.”
Chloe stepped closer.
“What happens to you?”
“No prison.”
She exhaled.
“Probation. Fines. Divestment from every illegal enterprise.”
“So the syndicate?”
“Finished.”
“You can just do that?”
“No.”
A faint smile touched his mouth.
“Which is why several people currently hate me.”
“How many?”
“Enough.”
Chloe stared.
“You're joking.”
“Slightly.”
She hit his arm.
Dominic looked genuinely surprised.
“Did you just hit me?”
“Yes.”
“People generally avoid that.”
“Maybe people should do it more often.”
He laughed.
Actually laughed.
Chloe's heart stopped.
Then Dominic became serious.
“I want you to resign.”
Her smile disappeared.
“What?”
“From Russo Holdings.”
“You're firing me?”
“No.”
“It sounds remarkably similar.”
“I'll provide severance. References. Whatever position you want somewhere else.”
Chloe stared at him.
“Why?”
His gaze dropped.
“Because being near me nearly got you killed.”
“And?”
“And I won't allow it again.”
Anger rose in her chest.
“You don't get to decide that.”
“I do.”
“No.”
“Chloe.”
“You don't own me.”
“I know.”
“Then stop deciding what's best for me without asking.”
Dominic's jaw tightened.
“You deserve normal.”
“What does that even mean?”
“Someone who takes you to restaurants without security sitting three tables away.”
“That sounds convenient.”
“Someone whose enemies don't know your address.”
“I've moved.”
“Chloe.”
She stepped toward him.
“Someone less dangerous?”
“Yes.”
“Someone less complicated?”
“Yes.”
“Someone I don't love?”
Dominic stopped breathing.
So did Chloe.
The words hung between them.
She hadn't planned them.
But once spoken, she refused to take them back.
Dominic's face became completely unreadable.
“Say that again.”
“No.”
“Chloe.”
“You heard me.”
He crossed the distance between them.
Slowly.
Giving her every opportunity to move.
She didn't.
“You love me?”
His voice sounded almost disbelieving.
Chloe swallowed.
“Against considerable evidence of good judgment.”
A breath escaped him.
Almost a laugh.
Then his expression fractured.
For the first time, she saw Dominic without armor.
“I don't know how to do this.”
“Do what?”
“This.”
He gestured helplessly between them.
Chloe's chest ached.
“Neither do I.”
“I know how to protect people.”
“I noticed.”
“I know how to solve problems.”
“You usually create three new ones.”
His mouth twitched.
“But I don't know how to…”
He stopped.
“Love someone?”
Dominic looked at her.
“I've loved you for months.”
Chloe's eyes filled.
“What?”
“I knew it the day you stayed three hours late because Teresa's surgery forced me to cancel a meeting, and you brought food to the hospital without telling anyone.”
“That was just—”
“You.”
His voice softened.
“That was you.”
Chloe blinked away tears.
“Then why did you treat me like an employee?”
“You were my employee.”
“Astonishing ethical restraint from a mafia boss.”
He laughed quietly.
“I contain multitudes.”
She stepped closer.
“I'm still angry about the security detail.”
“I know.”
“And you're still controlling.”
“I know.”
“And you have serious communication problems.”
“I know.”
“This isn't going to be easy.”
“No.”
Chloe looked into his eyes.
“But I don't want easy.”
Dominic lifted one hand.
He paused before touching her face.
A question.
Chloe leaned into his palm.
His thumb brushed her cheek.
“Tell me to stop.”
She shook her head.
He kissed her.
Nothing about Dominic Russo was careless.
Not the way he negotiated.
Not the way he fought.
Not the way he loved.
The kiss began softly, almost reverently, as though he feared she might disappear.
Then Chloe gripped his shirt.
Dominic's restraint broke.
He pulled her closer.
The city blurred behind them.
For the first time in her life, Chloe did not feel like she was occupying negative space.
She felt seen.
Entirely.
And Dominic, who had spent his life believing love was leverage, discovered something terrifying.
Sometimes love wasn't the weakness.
Sometimes it was the reason you finally stopped being afraid to change.
