Sarah did not sleep.
Every noise outside her room sounded like footsteps.
Every elevator bell made her stomach tighten.
At 2:17 a.m., someone laughed in the hallway and she nearly called security.
At 3:42, a service cart rolled past her door.
At 5:06, her phone vibrated again.
Daniel.
She did not open the message.
She blocked the number.
Then another message arrived from a different number.
Blocking me won’t fix this.
Sarah sat on the edge of the bed.
For nearly two years, she had convinced herself Daniel wasn’t dangerous.
Possessive?
Yes.
Jealous?
Definitely.
Controlling?
Sometimes.
But dangerous?
That word had felt too dramatic.
Until three nights earlier.
They had argued in the restaurant parking lot after Sarah announced she was quitting.
Daniel had grabbed her wrist.
She told him to release her.
He squeezed harder.
She remembered staring at his face and realizing he wasn’t angry because she was leaving the job.
He was angry because she was leaving him.
“You don’t get to erase me,” he had whispered.
Sarah had pulled free.
The next morning, she boarded a plane.
She thought distance would solve everything.
Now Daniel was somewhere nearby.
A knock hit the door.
Sarah jumped.
“Ms. Quinn?”
A male voice.
“Resort security.”
Sarah didn’t move.
“Ms. Quinn, Mr. Bellini asked us to check on you.”
Marco.
She approached the door carefully.
Through the peephole she saw two uniformed hotel security officers.
Sarah opened the door only a few inches.
“What happened?”
“Nothing, ma’am. We’ve been assigned to your floor.”
“Why?”
Neither guard answered.
Sarah already knew.
Marcelo.
At nine o’clock, a black SUV waited outside.
Marco stood beside it.
Sarah stopped walking.
“No.”
Marco sighed.
“You don’t even know why I’m here.”
“I have a pretty good guess.”
“Mr. Castellane would like to speak with you.”
“Tell Mr. Castellane thank you for yesterday, but I’m leaving.”
“You’re not leaving.”
Sarah stared.
Marco corrected himself.
“You shouldn’t leave.”
“That sounds slightly less criminal.”
Marco almost smiled.
“Please get in the car.”
Sarah crossed her arms.
“Did Marcelo send security to my hotel?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Daniel Price.”
Her face lost color.
Marco watched her reaction.
“He’s here.”
Sarah looked toward the lobby.
“How do you know?”
“We know.”
“Where is he?”
“Currently?”
“Yes.”
Marco checked his watch.
“In a rental car approximately six miles east of here.”
Sarah stared.
“You’re tracking him?”
“Yes.”
“Is that legal?”
Marco opened the SUV door.
“Do you want the complicated answer?”
“No.”
“Then get in.”
Marcelo was waiting beside the mineral spring.
Again.
Sarah almost laughed when she saw him.
“You really like this place.”
“It’s mine.”
“That probably helps.”
He gestured toward a chair.
Sarah remained standing.
“You investigated me.”
“I investigated him.”
“Which required investigating me.”
“Yes.”
At least he didn’t lie.
Sarah looked toward the guards.
“Can we talk without an audience?”
Marcelo nodded.
Everyone moved away.
Sarah turned back to him.
“You don’t know me.”
“No.”
“You don’t owe me anything.”
“No.”
“So stop.”
Marcelo studied her.
“Stop what?”
“Protecting me.”
Something changed in his expression.
“I’m not protecting you.”
Sarah glanced at the guards.
“Really?”
“I’m protecting my property.”
She stared.
Marcelo continued.
“Someone entered my estate because a maintenance contractor left a gate unsecured.”
“You’re blaming a gate?”
“I’m explaining why you became my responsibility.”
“I am not your responsibility.”
“No,” Marcelo said quietly. “You’re Daniel Price’s obsession.”
Sarah flinched.
Marcelo immediately regretted the wording.
He softened his voice.
“He followed you.”
“I know.”
“He purchased his ticket four hours after you did.”
Sarah’s stomach dropped.
Marcelo watched her.
“That means someone told him your travel information.”
“Claire.”
“Your friend?”
“She booked the hotel.”
Marcelo shook his head.
“We checked.”
Sarah’s eyes narrowed.
“You checked Claire?”
“Yes.”
“She didn’t contact him.”
“Then who?”
“We don’t know yet.”
Sarah paced toward the water.
Marcelo’s hand trembled.
She noticed.
“You should sit.”
“I’m fine.”
“You always say that?”
Marcelo looked almost offended.
Sarah pointed toward his hand.
“You asked me yesterday.”
“About the tremor.”
“Yes.”
Marcelo sat.
Sarah stood behind him.
“Can I?”
He hesitated.
Then nodded.
She gently touched the upper edge of his shoulder.
His entire body tensed.
Sarah immediately removed her hand.
“I’m not going to hurt you.”
“I’m not concerned about pain.”
“No?”
“No.”
“Then what?”
Marcelo looked toward the water.
“People touching me.”
Sarah understood.
She moved slower.
Her fingertips followed the edge of his shoulder blade.
“Old injury?”
“Car accident.”
“When?”
“Seven years ago.”
“Broken bones?”
“Clavicle. Two ribs.”
“Neck?”
“Doctors said no.”
Sarah pressed lightly near the base of his neck.
Marcelo’s right fingers twitched.
“There.”
He looked at his hand.
Sarah pressed again.
The tremor intensified.
Marco, watching from a distance, immediately approached.
Marcelo lifted his left hand.
Marco stopped.
Sarah released the pressure.
The shaking faded.
Marcelo looked at her.
“You did that.”
“No. Your body did.”
“What does it mean?”
“It means you need a neurologist who listens to your shoulder.”
“I’ve seen three.”
“See four.”
For the first time, Marcelo smiled.
Actually smiled.
It transformed his face.
For half a second, Sarah forgot he frightened everyone around him.
Then a phone rang.
Marco answered.
His expression changed.
Marcelo stood.
“What?”
Marco looked at Sarah.
“Daniel Price entered the resort.”
Sarah’s heartbeat accelerated.
“Where?”
“Lobby.”
Marcelo’s expression became ice.
“Keep him there.”
Sarah grabbed his arm.
“No.”
Marcelo looked down at her hand.
She released him.
“I’ll deal with Daniel.”
“No.”
“You can’t just—”
“He followed you across state lines.”
“That doesn’t give you permission to destroy him.”
Marcelo’s gaze hardened.
Sarah realized something.
She didn’t know exactly what Marcelo Castellane did.
The internet described him as an international investor.
The hotel employees whispered another word.
Mafia.
Sarah didn’t know how much was true.
But she knew one thing.
If Marcelo confronted Daniel the way she imagined, the situation would escalate beyond anything she could control.
“I need to speak to him.”
Marcelo shook his head.
“Sarah—”
“I need to tell him it’s over.”
“He already knows.”
“I need to tell myself.”
That stopped Marcelo.
Sarah swallowed.
“For months I kept thinking maybe I had exaggerated everything. Maybe I was too sensitive. Maybe he grabbed me because he was angry and it wouldn’t happen again.”
Marcelo listened.
“I kept shrinking my life to avoid making him angry. I stopped seeing friends. I changed my clothes. I stopped talking to customers he didn’t like.”
Her voice shook.
“And when I finally left, I ran.”
Marcelo said nothing.
Sarah looked directly at him.
“I don’t want to run again.”
A long silence followed.
Then Marcelo nodded.
“You speak.”
Sarah exhaled.
“Thank you.”
“I stand beside you.”
“That defeats the point.”
“It’s not negotiable.”
Twenty minutes later, Daniel stood in a private conference room at the resort.
He looked exhausted and furious.
Then Sarah entered.
Daniel’s eyes softened instantly.
“Sarah.”
She stopped six feet away.
Marcelo stood near the door.
Daniel noticed him.
His expression changed.
“Who is that?”
Sarah ignored the question.
“Why did you follow me?”
“I was worried.”
“No.”
“You disappeared.”
“I left.”
“Without telling me.”
“I don’t owe you permission.”
Daniel stepped forward.
Marcelo moved slightly.
Daniel noticed.
“Who is he?”
Sarah’s voice remained steady.
“Someone who understands the word no.”
Daniel laughed.
“Really?”
“Go home.”
“Sarah—”
“Go home.”
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“I flew across the country because I love you.”
“You flew across the country because you couldn’t control me.”
His face changed.
There it was.
The anger.
The version of Daniel she had spent two years trying to avoid.
“You think you’re special now?”
Sarah felt fear rise.
But she didn’t move.
Daniel pointed toward Marcelo.
“You hide behind some rich guy for forty-eight hours and suddenly—”
Marcelo spoke quietly.
“Lower your hand.”
Daniel turned.
“What?”
Marcelo didn’t repeat himself.
Daniel lowered it.
Sarah continued.
“You grabbed me.”
“You were leaving.”
“That isn’t an excuse.”
“I apologized.”
“No. You told me I made you do it.”
Daniel’s mouth opened.
Sarah stepped closer.
“You don’t love me.”
His expression collapsed.
“You love having me afraid to leave.”
Daniel stared at her.
Then his eyes darkened.
“You’ll come back.”
Sarah shook her head.
“No.”
“Eventually.”
“No.”
Daniel smiled strangely.
“You always do.”
Marcelo’s voice cut through the room.
“She said no.”
Daniel looked at him.
“And you are?”
Marcelo stepped forward.
“Marcelo Castellane.”
The blood drained from Daniel’s face.
Apparently he knew the name.
Sarah noticed.
Daniel looked toward the door.
Then back at Marcelo.
“I didn’t know.”
Marcelo’s expression remained calm.
“You shouldn’t need my name to understand consent.”
Daniel swallowed.
Marcelo opened the door.
“Leave the resort.”
Daniel walked out.
Before leaving, he looked at Sarah.
Something about his expression bothered her.
Not anger.
Confidence.
Like he knew something she didn’t.
That evening, Marcelo’s security team discovered why.
Daniel had not found Sarah through Claire.
He had tracked her through her phone account.
An account that, according to the provider, Sarah had never authorized him to access.
And Daniel had done something else.
He had copied hundreds of Sarah’s private messages.
Photographs.
Financial information.
Work records.
Even her passport details.
Marco placed the evidence in front of Marcelo.
“There’s more.”
Marcelo looked up.
“Price transferred money to someone at the resort.”
“How much?”
“Twenty thousand.”
“For what?”
“We don’t know.”
Marcelo looked toward Sarah’s hotel across the valley.
“Find out.”
Marco nodded.
Marcelo’s right hand trembled.
This time violently.
He grabbed the desk.
Pain shot through his shoulder.
Marco moved toward him.
Marcelo nearly collapsed.
For the first time in years, fear appeared in Marco’s face.
“Call the doctor.”
Marcelo shook his head.
“No.”
“Sir—”
“Call Sarah.”
