Chapter 5

By My Life Story Editorial · Published · Updated

The warehouse stood at the edge of an industrial district west of Chicago.

From the street, it looked abandoned.

Its windows were dark.

Its loading docks were empty.

A rusted sign hung above the entrance.

But inside, people were being held against their will.

And Noah Carter was among them.

Emily had recognized the building from a photograph in Gabriel's property records.

Years earlier, he had purchased it through a subsidiary company.

Victor had leased it under a legitimate freight agreement.

Gabriel had never visited the property.

Now he stood in Sarah Mitchell's office, staring at a photograph of the building.

"That's where they're holding him."

Emily nodded.

"The yellow paint. The window. The clock."

Sarah contacted the investigators.

They compared the photograph with property records and other information gathered during the investigation.

Within hours, law enforcement had begun preparing an operation.

Emily wanted to go.

Gabriel refused to let her place herself in danger.

Then he stopped.

He had spent his entire adult life giving orders.

Emily was not one of his employees in that moment.

She was a frightened sister trying to save the only family she had.

"You don't have to go," he said more gently. "And you shouldn't have to face Victor again."

Emily looked at the photograph.

"I just want Noah home."

Gabriel nodded.

"So do I."

By evening, investigators had secured enough information to act.

Gabriel and Emily remained at a nearby command location while officers approached the warehouse.

The waiting was unbearable.

Emily sat with her phone in both hands.

Gabriel stood beside the window.

Neither spoke.

Then a call came through.

The warehouse had been entered.

Several people had been found.

Medical personnel were being brought inside.

Emily stood so quickly that her chair fell backward.

"Noah?"

Gabriel listened.

His expression changed.

"He's alive."

Emily covered her mouth.

For a moment, she could not breathe.

Then she began crying.

Not the silent, frightened tears Gabriel had seen in his kitchen.

These were tears of relief.

He stepped toward her.

She reached for him before she seemed to realize what she was doing.

Gabriel held her carefully.

"It's okay," he said.

She shook her head against his chest.

"I thought I'd lost him."

"I know."

But the operation was not over.

Victor Hale had escaped before officers entered the building.

And the financial records recovered from the warehouse revealed something Gabriel had not anticipated.

Victor had prepared evidence designed to implicate him.

Contracts.

Invoices.

Recorded conversations.

Some documents were forged.

Others were genuine records of Gabriel's earlier criminal dealings.

Victor had kept them for years.

Insurance against betrayal.

Gabriel's attorney reviewed the evidence.

Then she gave him the truth.

"You're going to have to answer for your own conduct."

Gabriel looked at her.

"I know."

"You may lose control of your companies."

"I know."

"There may be criminal charges."

Gabriel stared through the window.

For fifteen years, he had believed that power meant never having to answer to anyone.

Now he understood that the people who had suffered under Victor's operation would never be safe if the men responsible could simply buy their way out of consequences.

"Then I'll answer," he said.

Two days later, Noah Carter was released from the hospital.

He had suffered injuries and severe exhaustion, but doctors expected him to recover.

Emily arrived with a bag of clean clothes.

When Noah saw her, he began crying.

"I'm sorry, Em."

She hugged him.

"You're alive. That's what matters."

"I thought I could fix everything."

"You don't have to fix everything."

He looked at her bruised face.

"Did they do that because of me?"

Emily took his hand.

"They did it because they chose to hurt people."

Noah lowered his head.

"I should've told you about the gambling."

"Yes," Emily said softly. "You should have."

He looked up.

She squeezed his hand.

"But we're going to deal with that together."

Gabriel stood near the doorway.

Noah noticed him.

"You're Gabriel Voss."

Gabriel nodded.

"I am."

Noah's expression became uncertain.

"I heard you helped Emily."

"She helped herself more than you know."

Noah looked at his sister.

Then he held out his hand.

"Thank you."

Gabriel shook it.

For reasons he could not explain, the simple gesture meant more than the respect he had spent years demanding from powerful men.

That evening, Gabriel returned to his mansion.

The house was quiet.

Too quiet.

Daniel was gone.

Several employees had resigned.

Investigators had taken copies of financial records and electronic devices.

Gabriel's business partners were calling.

His attorneys were preparing for difficult months ahead.

The empire he had spent fifteen years building was beginning to collapse.

He entered the kitchen.

The broken plate had been replaced.

The sink was clean.

Emily's bloodstained shirt was sealed in an evidence bag.

Gabriel stood where he had first seen her.

He remembered asking whose blood was on the fabric.

He remembered her fear.

And he remembered the realization that he had spent years looking away from the consequences of his own business relationships.

His phone rang.

It was Sarah.

"Victor has been arrested."

Gabriel closed his eyes.

"Where?"

"At a private airfield. He was attempting to leave the country."

Gabriel exhaled.

Sarah continued.

"Investigators recovered additional records from his vehicle. They may help establish the extent of his operation."

"Good."

"Gabriel, there's something else."

He waited.

"Victor has offered to cooperate."

Gabriel knew what that meant.

Victor would tell investigators everything he knew.

Including the things Gabriel had spent years trying to forget.

"Let him talk," Gabriel said.

He ended the call.

Then he looked around the kitchen.

For the first time in his adult life, Gabriel Voss did not know what tomorrow would bring.

And strangely, he no longer wanted to control every answer.
