Chapter 3

By My Life Story Editorial · Published · Updated

Darkness transformed the Moretti estate.

Without chandeliers, polished marble, or sunlight pouring through enormous windows, the mansion became a maze of black corridors.

Anna heard Lily scream.

“Mommy!”

“I’m here!”

She moved toward the children by memory.

Dominic was already there.

He lifted Ethan with one arm.

Anna grabbed Lily.

“Safe room,” he ordered.

Emergency lights should have activated.

They did not.

That frightened Dominic more than the alarm.

Someone had not merely crossed the fence.

Someone had interfered with the estate’s backup power.

“Marco,” Dominic spoke into his radio.

Static.

“Marco.”

Nothing.

Rachel appeared from the hallway holding a flashlight.

“Internal system’s compromised.”

“How?”

“Same way the cameras were.”

Dominic looked at Anna.

Inside access.

Again.

They moved quickly.

The safe room was hidden behind a paneled wall inside Dominic’s private library.

Anna had worked in the mansion six years without knowing it existed.

Dominic pressed his palm against a concealed scanner.

Nothing happened.

Rachel swore quietly.

“Electronic lock’s down.”

Dominic pulled a key from beneath his watch strap.

Anna stared.

“You carry that?”

“Always.”

The wall opened.

He pushed Anna and the children inside.

“You too,” Anna said.

“No.”

“Dominic.”

His eyes met hers.

“I need to know who came into my house.”

“You have security.”

“Security is exactly what failed.”

Rachel handed him a flashlight.

“I’m coming.”

Dominic nodded.

Anna grabbed his sleeve.

He looked down.

For a moment she forgot he was her employer.

Forgot the whispered stories.

Forgot the men who lowered their voices when saying his name.

She saw only Ethan’s father.

“Come back.”

Something passed between them.

Dominic covered her hand with his.

“I will.”

The wall closed.

Inside the safe room, Ethan tried to act brave.

“Dad knows what he’s doing.”

Anna nodded.

“So do the guards.”

Ethan looked away.

Both knew that was not entirely true.

Lily sat on the floor holding the stuffed rabbit she had grabbed from her room.

“I don’t like dark.”

Anna pulled her close.

“It won’t be dark long.”

A monitor on the wall suddenly flickered.

Security cameras appeared.

Most screens displayed static.

Three were working.

The driveway.

The east garden.

The garage.

Ethan pointed.

“There.”

A shadow moved near the garage.

Anna leaned closer.

A man wearing black crossed the camera.

Then another.

They were not running toward the house.

They were running away from it.

“What are they doing?” Ethan whispered.

Anna did not know.

Then the garage camera changed.

Someone stepped into view.

A woman.

Claire.

Anna stopped breathing.

She looked directly toward the camera.

As though she knew Anna was watching.

Then Claire raised one hand.

And waved.

Lily asked, “Who’s that lady?”

Anna did not answer.

Claire walked away.

Two minutes later the mansion lights returned.

The safe-room door opened.

Dominic stood outside.

He was unharmed.

Anna exhaled.

“What happened?”

“They never entered the main house.”

“Then why trigger everything?”

“Diversion.”

Rachel came behind him.

“They wanted something from the garage.”

“What?”

Dominic looked grim.

“One of my cars.”

Anna blinked.

“They broke into this place to steal a car?”

“Not the car.”

He led her downstairs.

A black SUV sat with every door open.

The dashboard had been dismantled.

Dominic pointed toward an empty compartment beneath the rear floor.

“What was there?” Anna asked.

“A backup drive.”

Rachel folded her arms.

“Three months of archived security footage.”

Anna understood.

“They wanted evidence.”

“Exactly.”

“But of what?”

Dominic looked toward the house.

“That’s what we need to find out.”

The thieves had taken the drive.

But they had made one mistake.

The system automatically copied certain flagged recordings to an encrypted server.

Rachel spent most of the night rebuilding access.

At dawn, she found a file.

Date: six weeks earlier.

Time: 1:13 a.m.

Location: west service entrance.

Victor Salerno appeared on screen.

He unlocked the door.

Martin Vale entered.

The two men carried equipment inside.

Then another person joined them.

Anna leaned forward.

“Who is that?”

Dominic’s expression hardened.

A man in a security uniform.

Marco.

Nobody spoke.

The room changed.

Marco had worked for Dominic for fourteen years.

He had protected Sophia.

He had carried Ethan out of the church after his mother’s funeral when the boy refused to walk.

Dominic stared at the screen.

Rachel said carefully, “It could have an explanation.”

Dominic did not answer.

Marco entered the study seconds later.

“You called?”

Everyone looked at him.

He stopped.

Dominic turned the monitor.

Marco saw himself.

His face changed.

“Boss.”

“Explain.”

Marco stared at the footage.

“I can.”

“Then do it.”

Marco swallowed.

“Victor told me the security contractor was testing night-entry protocols.”

“You didn’t verify?”

“He had authorization.”

“From whom?”

Marco hesitated.

“You.”

Dominic’s face went still.

“I never authorized it.”

Marco looked genuinely stunned.

“He showed me an email.”

Rachel asked, “Do you still have it?”

“Yes.”

She examined his phone.

The message appeared to come from Dominic’s private address.

It was fake.

Sophisticated.

But fake.

Marco leaned against the desk.

“God.”

Dominic remained silent.

Marco looked at him.

“I would never hurt Ethan.”

“I know.”

Marco blinked.

“You do?”

“If you wanted him dead, you’ve had fourteen years of easier opportunities.”

It was a brutal statement.

But also trust.

Marco nodded.

Rachel traced the forged email.

Whoever sent it had copied Dominic’s writing patterns and email signature almost perfectly.

“This isn’t a stranger,” she said.

“They know how you communicate.”

Anna thought about Claire.

“How does my sister-in-law fit into this?”

Rachel looked at her.

“That’s what we need to ask her.”

Finding Claire was easier than expected.

She called Anna herself.

At 9:16 that morning.

“Hello, Anna.”

Anna’s chest tightened.

“Claire.”

Dominic signaled Rachel to trace the call.

Anna continued.

“Why are you doing this?”

“Doing what?”

“You were at the estate last night.”

Silence.

Then Claire laughed softly.

“You always were smarter than Daniel thought.”

“Don’t say his name.”

“Why? He was my brother.”

“And my husband.”

“And now he’s dead.”

Anna closed her eyes.

“Did you try to kill Ethan?”

Claire’s answer came immediately.

“No.”

Dominic looked at Rachel.

Rachel shook her head. Too soon to know whether she believed it.

“Then why were you with Victor?”

Claire’s voice changed.

“Because Victor knows what happened to Daniel.”

Anna gripped the phone.

“What are you talking about?”

“Daniel’s death wasn’t an accident.”

The room seemed to tilt.

Anna whispered, “Stop.”

“You think he fell from scaffolding because someone forgot a safety harness?”

“That’s what happened.”

“That’s what you were told.”

Dominic looked sharply toward Rachel.

Claire continued.

“Daniel discovered something at the construction company.”

“What?”

“Money laundering. False contracts. Payments hidden through subcontractors.”

Anna’s eyes went to Dominic.

His family controlled several construction businesses.

Claire knew what she was thinking.

“Not Dominic,” she said.

Dominic’s eyebrows lifted.

“Then who?”

“Victor.”

Anna felt sick.

Claire continued.

“Daniel was going to report him.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because I couldn’t prove it.”

“So you waited four years?”

“I investigated four years.”

“And now someone tried to kill a child!”

“That wasn’t supposed to happen.”

Anna’s voice rose.

“What does that mean?”

Claire went silent.

“Claire!”

“Victor told me he was going to scare Dominic.”

“By poisoning Ethan?”

“I didn’t know!”

“Then help us.”

“I can’t.”

“Why?”

Another silence.

Then Claire whispered, “Because Victor knows about Lily.”

Anna felt her heart stop.

“What about Lily?”

“Daniel left evidence.”

“Where?”

“He hid it before he died.”

“What does that have to do with my daughter?”

“He put the key inside something he knew nobody would throw away.”

Anna’s mind raced.

Claire continued.

“Lily’s stuffed rabbit.”

Anna turned.

Lily was upstairs.

Holding the rabbit.

The same rabbit Daniel had bought two days before he died.

Anna whispered, “Oh my God.”

Claire said, “Victor knows.”

Dominic was already moving toward the door.

Anna ran after him.

They raced upstairs.

The hallway was empty.

“Lily!”

No answer.

Anna ran into the playroom.

Ethan sat on the carpet.

Alone.

“Where’s Lily?”

He looked confused.

“She went with the lady.”

Anna’s blood turned cold.

“What lady?”

“She said you sent her.”

Dominic shouted for security.

Anna looked around wildly.

“Which lady?”

Ethan pointed toward the rear staircase.

“She had yellow hair.”

Claire had blond hair.

Anna ran.

Down the staircase.

Through the service hall.

The rear door stood open.

Outside, a car was pulling away.

“LILY!”

Anna sprinted across the driveway.

The vehicle accelerated.

Dominic’s men rushed toward their cars.

Anna could do nothing but watch the taillights disappear beyond the gates.

Her phone rang.

Claire.

Anna answered screaming.

“What did you do?”

Claire sounded confused.

“What?”

“You took Lily!”

“No, I didn’t.”

“You liar!”

“Anna, listen to me. I’m still in Manhattan.”

Anna looked at Dominic.

Rachel was already checking.

Then Claire said something that changed everything.

“Victor knows you’ll blame me.”

Anna stopped.

“He wanted you looking in the wrong direction.”

Dominic’s phone rang.

Victor Salerno’s name appeared on the screen.

He answered.

Victor spoke calmly.

“If you want the little girl alive, bring me the rabbit.”

Dominic looked at Anna.

The rabbit was gone too.

Victor laughed.

“Actually…”

A pause.

“…bring me Anna Carter.”

Then the line went dead.
