The Blanket Dominic No Longer Needed · Chapter 4 of 4

Chapter 4

By My Life Story Editorial · Published · Updated

Sophia couldn't breathe.

She stood in the center of Lily's empty room staring at a stuffed rabbit lying beside the bed.

The window was locked.

The hallway camera had gone dark for four minutes.

Four minutes.

That was all it had taken.

“Lily!”

She screamed her daughter's name until her throat hurt.

Security teams searched every room.

Closets.

Basements.

Service corridors.

The gardens.

The greenhouse.

Nothing.

Victor remained beside Sophia.

“We'll find her.”

Sophia turned on him.

“Don't tell me that unless you know.”

Victor absorbed the anger.

“You're right.”

Tears ran down her face.

“I trusted this house.”

“I know.”

“I trusted him.”

Dominic appeared in the doorway.

Sophia looked at him.

Everything inside her broke.

She crossed the room and struck his chest with both hands.

“You said she'd be safe!”

Dominic didn't move.

“You promised me!”

“I know.”

“You brought us here!”

“I know.”

She hit him again.

Victor turned away.

Sophia's hands eventually stopped.

Then she collapsed against Dominic's chest.

He caught her.

“I'll get her back,” he said.

Sophia sobbed.

Dominic held her tighter.

“I will get her back.”

His voice cracked on the final word.

Sophia felt it.

For the first time, she understood something.

Dominic wasn't afraid because he might lose a bargaining piece.

He wasn't afraid because someone had challenged his authority.

He was terrified because he loved Lily.

Maybe he hadn't named it.

Maybe he hadn't admitted it.

But he did.

Dominic Moretti loved her child.

Victor's phone rang.

“Sir.”

A guard had found something.

Near the laundry elevator, investigators discovered a plastic giraffe.

George.

Beside it was a note.

Dominic unfolded it.

BRING MATTEO TO THE OLD MORETTI HOUSE. MIDNIGHT. COME ALONE IF YOU WANT THE CHILD ALIVE.

Matteo stared at the message.

“This is Antonio.”

Dominic looked at him.

“Yes.”

Sophia wiped her tears.

“Where is the old house?”

“My grandfather's estate.”

“Then we're going.”

Dominic turned.

“No.”

Sophia's eyes flashed.

“Don't.”

“He wants me.”

“He has my daughter.”

“Exactly why you're staying here.”

“Dominic—”

“If something happens to me, Victor protects you.”

She stared at him.

“If something happens to Lily, there isn't enough protection in the world to make me care what happens afterward.”

Dominic understood.

He stepped closer.

“Sophia.”

“No. You don't get to make every decision.”

His expression changed.

She continued.

“You asked me to trust you. Fine. Now trust me.”

Dominic looked at her for a long moment.

Then nodded.

They made a plan.

Not Antonio's plan.

Theirs.

At 11:48 p.m., Dominic's vehicle reached the abandoned Moretti estate.

The house had been empty for eighteen years.

Dark windows overlooked the Sound.

Dead vines covered stone walls.

Sophia remained inside a second vehicle half a mile away with Victor.

Matteo sat beside Dominic.

“You don't have to do this,” Dominic said.

“He has Olivia too.”

“We'll get both girls.”

Matteo looked at him.

“When did you become optimistic?”

Dominic thought of Lily dragging a blanket across marble.

“Recently.”

They entered the house.

Antonio Moretti waited in the ballroom.

He was seventy-one.

Older than Dominic remembered.

But his eyes were Salvatore's eyes.

Hard.

Cold.

Certain.

Beside him stood Raymond.

And behind them sat two chairs.

Olivia was tied to one.

Lily sat in the other, kicking her feet because they didn't reach the floor.

She wasn't tied.

Apparently even kidnappers had discovered trying to restrain Lily Carter was exhausting.

When she saw Dominic, she smiled.

“Mr. Dominic!”

Dominic's entire body nearly collapsed with relief.

“Hi, trouble.”

“I want Mommy.”

“I know.”

Antonio smiled.

“How touching.”

Dominic looked at him.

“You're supposed to be dead.”

“Your father wanted everyone to believe that.”

“My father should have finished the job.”

Antonio laughed.

“There he is. Salvatore's son.”

“No.”

Dominic's voice remained calm.

“I spent my entire life trying to be his son.”

He looked at Lily.

“I'm reconsidering.”

Antonio's smile faded.

“You became weak.”

“Because I care about someone?”

“Because they can be used against you.”

Dominic shook his head.

“You don't understand.”

“I understand perfectly.”

“No. My father didn't either.”

Dominic took one step forward.

“Caring doesn't create the weakness.”

Antonio's eyes narrowed.

“Fear does.”

Behind the estate, Victor's team silently moved into position.

Sophia waited inside the vehicle.

Every instinct demanded she run toward the house.

But she trusted Dominic.

For exactly six minutes.

Then Lily's voice came through Victor's earpiece.

“Mommy?”

Sophia froze.

Victor frowned.

“How—”

Lily had apparently found Dominic's hidden microphone.

“Mommy, Mr. Dominic came.”

Sophia covered her mouth.

Victor whispered.

“She doesn't realize what she's doing.”

Inside the ballroom, Antonio glanced toward Lily.

“What are you holding?”

Lily looked at the tiny transmitter Dominic had dropped near her chair.

“Button.”

Dominic almost smiled.

Antonio stepped toward her.

Dominic moved instantly.

“Don't.”

Antonio stopped.

There was something in Dominic's voice that changed the room.

Raymond reached inside his coat.

Outside, Victor gave the command.

The lights went out.

Glass shattered somewhere downstairs.

Men shouted.

Sophia heard chaos through the earpiece.

Then Lily screamed.

That was enough.

Sophia ran.

Victor caught her arm.

“Wait.”

“My daughter is in there!”

Two seconds later, his radio crackled.

“Ballroom secure.”

Sophia sprinted.

She reached the room and saw Lily in Dominic's arms.

Safe.

Completely safe.

“Mommy!”

Dominic lowered her.

Lily ran.

Sophia dropped to her knees and caught her daughter.

She kissed Lily's face, hair, hands.

“Are you hurt?”

“No.”

“Did anybody hurt you?”

“No.”

“They gave me cookies.”

Sophia laughed and cried simultaneously.

Behind them, Matteo untied Olivia.

Father and daughter collapsed into each other's arms.

Raymond was restrained.

Antonio sat against the wall, furious but alive.

Dominic stood silently.

Sophia looked at him.

Then stood.

She crossed the room.

Dominic expected gratitude.

Maybe tears.

Instead, Sophia slapped him across the shoulder.

“You dropped your microphone next to a three-year-old.”

Dominic blinked.

“It helped.”

“She announced your arrival.”

“Yes.”

“You nearly ruined the entire plan.”

“I understand.”

Sophia stared at him.

Then threw her arms around him.

Dominic froze.

Only for a moment.

Then he held her.

Not carefully.

Not politely.

He held her like someone who had nearly lost the last warm thing in his world.

Sophia buried her face against his chest.

“Thank you.”

Dominic closed his eyes.

“You don't have to thank me.”

“Yes, I do.”

“No.”

He looked toward Lily.

“She saved me first.”

Later, while police and attorneys dealt with the aftermath, Antonio finally told the truth.

He had spent years rebuilding influence after Salvatore exiled him.

Raymond became his inside man.

The intercepted shipments were designed to weaken Dominic's legitimate businesses and force lenders and partners to lose confidence.

The succession agreement was supposed to transfer control to Matteo, whom Antonio believed he could manipulate through Olivia.

Sophia had accidentally seen Antonio during a secret estate meeting.

Raymond feared she'd recognized him.

She hadn't.

But their attempt to intimidate her turned suspicion toward themselves.

The entire scheme had unraveled because a housekeeper happened to be cleaning the wrong hallway.

And because a three-year-old girl found a listening device she thought was a button.

By sunrise, Antonio and Raymond were gone from the Moretti estate under guard, and evidence had been handed to attorneys and law enforcement contacts capable of dismantling the conspiracy without exposing Sophia or Lily.

Matteo stood outside near the water.

Dominic joined him.

“I betrayed you,” Matteo said.

“Yes.”

“You should hate me.”

“Probably.”

“I don't deserve forgiveness.”

Dominic thought about his father's rules.

Trust slowly.

Forgive never.

Need no one.

For decades, those words had felt like scripture.

Now they sounded like instructions for dying alone.

“You were protecting your daughter,” Dominic said.

“That doesn't excuse everything.”

“No.”

Dominic looked toward Olivia.

“But it explains enough for me to listen.”

Matteo stared at him.

“You're forgiving me?”

“Eventually.”

“How eventually?”

“Ask again in ten years.”

Matteo laughed.

Dominic almost did.

When they returned home, Sophia carried Lily upstairs.

The child was asleep before they reached the landing.

Dominic followed.

Sophia placed Lily beneath the covers.

Then she turned.

Dominic stood in the doorway.

“You okay?” he asked.

“No.”

“Me neither.”

Sophia smiled weakly.

They walked into the hallway.

Dominic looked at her.

“I need to say something.”

“That sounds ominous.”

“It probably is.”

Sophia waited.

“I don't know what this is.”

He gestured between them.

“But I know what it isn't.”

“What?”

“Charity.”

Sophia's expression softened.

“And it isn't obligation.”

“Okay.”

“And it isn't because Lily put a blanket over me.”

Sophia's eyebrow rose.

“That part definitely started something.”

Dominic almost smiled.

“Probably.”

He moved closer.

“I care about you.”

Sophia's breath caught.

“I care about Lily.”

“I know.”

“That terrifies me.”

Sophia nodded.

“Good.”

Dominic frowned.

“Good?”

“If you weren't scared, it wouldn't mean anything.”

He remembered Daniel's words.

Love didn't make you fearless.

It gave you a reason to be brave while terrified.

Dominic lifted a hand to Sophia's cheek.

He stopped before touching her.

Waiting.

Asking.

Sophia closed the distance herself.

Their first kiss was quiet.

Slow.

Nothing dramatic.

No explosions.

No grand declarations.

Just two wounded people choosing, for one moment, not to run.

Then a sleepy voice came from the bedroom.

“Mommy?”

They separated.

Lily appeared holding her rabbit.

She looked at Dominic.

Then Sophia.

Then Dominic again.

“Were you kissing?”

Sophia's face turned crimson.

Dominic considered lying.

“Yes.”

Lily smiled.

“Okay.”

She turned around and returned to bed.

Dominic stared after her.

Sophia burst out laughing.

“What?”

“She doesn't care.”

Dominic looked offended.

“That was significant.”

“Not to a three-year-old.”

He followed Sophia into Lily's room.

As Sophia tucked her daughter in again, Dominic stood beside the bed.

Lily opened one eye.

“Mr. Dominic?”

“Yes?”

“You need blanket?”

Dominic looked at Sophia.

Then back at Lily.

“No.”

He smiled.

“I think I'm warm now.”
