Chapter 5

Isabella did not cry when she heard the message.

That frightened Luca more than tears would have.

She simply sat at Sofia’s kitchen table and stared at nothing.

Natalie eventually returned upstairs.

Marco left to coordinate security.

Sofia stood in the doorway for several moments before placing a hand on Isabella’s shoulder.

“You don’t have to decide how you feel tonight,” she said.

Isabella looked up.

“My father wants me dead.”

Sofia’s expression tightened.

“Yes.”

“I keep expecting those words to become less impossible.”

“They won’t.”

“Did Luca tell you?”

“No.”

“I heard enough.”

Isabella swallowed.

“What do I do with that?”

Sofia sat beside her.

“You survive long enough to decide.”

Simple.

Practical.

It sounded like Luca.

Maybe that was where he had learned it.

Later, Isabella found him outside near the frozen lake.

Snow had stopped.

The sky was clear.

He stood with his hands in his coat pockets, watching moonlight reflect across the ice.

“You left without a guard,” she said.

“Marco is fifty feet behind that tree.”

She looked.

A shape moved.

“Of course.”

She stood beside Luca.

“My father authorized my murder.”

Luca said nothing.

“I keep saying it because I think eventually I’ll understand it.”

“You may never.”

“Do you think he ever loved me?”

Luca took his time answering.

“I don’t know.”

“That’s a terrible answer.”

“It’s the truthful one.”

She looked at him.

“Could someone love you and still do something like this?”

“People use the word love to excuse terrible things.”

“That wasn’t my question.”

“No.”

Luca met her eyes.

“If someone knowingly chooses power over your life, whatever feeling they have does not deserve to control what you call love.”

The words hit hard.

Isabella looked away.

“I think I spent my entire life earning affection from people who had already decided what I was worth.”

Luca’s voice softened.

“You don’t have to do that here.”

The air between them changed again.

This time Isabella stepped closer.

“Would you stop me if I kissed you?”

Luca’s breathing changed.

“Yes.”

Pain flashed across her face.

He continued.

“Tonight.”

“Why?”

“Because you just learned your father wants you dead.”

“I know what I’m doing.”

“I believe you.”

“Then why?”

“Because tomorrow, if you still want to kiss me, I want you to know it wasn’t because you were trying to feel something stronger than grief.”

She stared at him.

“You really are infuriating.”

“I’ve been told.”

Isabella laughed despite herself.

“Tomorrow?”

“Tomorrow.”

She nodded.

“Fine.”

They returned inside.

Tomorrow never arrived quietly.

At 5:17 a.m., Elena called.

She had discovered the missing recording.

Not the physical device.

A copy.

Adrian Vale had set up an encrypted cloud transfer years earlier that nobody had noticed because the access instructions were hidden in metadata inside one of the photographs on the memory card.

When Elena opened it, she found a seven-minute recording.

Richard Carter and Adrian Vale.

The final meeting.

Every word Natalie had described was there.

Richard discussing payments.

Adrian begging to leave.

Richard explaining Damian would “handle the consequences.”

Then the sentence.

“If you disappear, nobody asks questions for long.”

Adrian asked, “Are you saying he’ll kill me?”

Richard answered, “Call it whatever helps you sleep.”

Isabella listened once.

Only once.

Then she removed the headphones.

“That’s enough.”

Luca watched her.

“What do you want to do?”

“Release it.”

“Publicly?”

“Yes.”

“That exposes your father.”

“I know.”

“It may also expose people who will retaliate.”

“I know.”

“You could give it privately to federal investigators.”

“And trust that none of the officials connected to them are compromised?”

Luca didn’t answer.

She continued.

“We release enough publicly that nobody can bury it, and we give everything to multiple agencies simultaneously.”

Elena nodded slowly.

“That creates redundancy.”

Luca looked at Isabella.

“You’ve thought about this.”

“All night.”

“Then we do it carefully.”

The plan took hours.

Copies of the evidence were prepared for journalists, federal investigators, and attorneys independent of Carter and Russo influence.

But before anything was sent, another message arrived.

This time directly to Isabella’s phone.

A photograph.

Her father.

Richard sat tied to a chair inside the abandoned St. Gabriel’s chapel.

His face was bruised.

Beneath the image, Damian had written:

COME ALONE WITH THE ORIGINAL CARD OR YOUR FATHER DIES WHERE YOU SHOULD HAVE.

Isabella stared.

Marco cursed.

Luca’s expression became unreadable.

“It could be staged.”

“It probably is,” Isabella said.

“But?”

“He’s still my father.”

Luca nodded.

She looked at him.

“You think I shouldn’t go.”

“I think Damian wants you to.”

“That isn’t the same answer.”

“No.”

“What would you do?”

Luca paused.

“If it were my father?”

“Yes.”

“I’d go.”

Marco stared at him.

“Boss.”

Luca held up a hand.

Isabella looked surprised.

“You’d walk into a trap?”

“No.”

“I said he wants me alone.”

“He can want many things.”

Despite herself, she smiled.

They devised a plan.

Isabella would enter the chapel.

But she would not carry the original card.

There was no original anymore that mattered; copies existed in multiple locations.

Luca’s people would remain out of sight.

More importantly, Elena scheduled the release of evidence.

If Isabella failed to cancel it within one hour, every file would automatically go out.

Damian could no longer win by killing her.

At dusk, Isabella returned to the place where everything had started.

St. Gabriel’s chapel.

This time she walked through the front doors willingly.

Damian stood at the altar.

Richard sat several feet away.

He really was tied to the chair.

When he saw Isabella, relief flooded his face.

“Thank God.”

She stopped.

A strange calm settled over her.

This was the same room.

Same cracked altar.

Same cold stone.

But she was not the same woman.

Damian held out his hand.

“The card.”

“You don’t need it.”

His smile disappeared.

“Excuse me?”

“There are copies.”

Richard’s face changed.

“What did you do?”

Isabella looked at him.

“What you should have done three years ago.”

Damian stepped closer.

“Give me the card.”

“No.”

He reached inside his coat.

Isabella didn’t move.

“If I don’t leave this chapel in forty minutes, everything goes public.”

Damian stopped.

“You’re bluffing.”

“Try me.”

Richard shouted, “Isabella, give it to him!”

She turned toward her father.

For one second she was eight years old again.

Wanting approval.

Wanting him to say she had done well.

Then she remembered the recording.

“You ordered Adrian Vale killed.”

Richard’s face drained.

“He was stealing from us.”

“Us?”

“The company.”

“Don’t.”

Her voice cracked.

“Don’t hide behind words.”

Richard looked at Damian.

“This is your fault.”

Damian laughed.

“My fault?”

“You were supposed to control her.”

Something inside Isabella finally broke free.

“Neither of you ever controlled me.”

Damian looked at her.

“You were going to marry me.”

“Because I believed you loved me.”

“I did.”

“No.”

She shook her head.

“You loved access.”

Damian’s expression hardened.

“And Luca?”

She said nothing.

He smiled cruelly.

“You think Duca is different?”

“Yes.”

Damian’s face changed.

“Because he hasn’t slept with you yet?”

Richard snapped, “Enough.”

Isabella stared at Damian.

“He’s different because every time he had the opportunity to decide for me, he asked what I wanted.”

Damian’s jaw tightened.

Outside, Luca listened through the transmitter hidden in Isabella’s coat.

He heard every word.

Marco whispered, “She’s buying time.”

Luca’s eyes remained on the chapel.

“No.”

“What?”

“She’s ending it.”

Inside, Damian grabbed Isabella’s arm.

She didn’t scream.

She looked at his hand.

“Let go.”

He tightened his grip.

The side door opened.

Luca entered.

Damian released her immediately and drew his weapon.

Luca stopped.

“You came alone?” Damian asked.

“No.”

Windows shattered as tactical lights flooded the chapel from outside.

Not Luca’s men.

Federal agents.

Isabella looked toward Luca.

He gave the faintest nod.

She had insisted they notify law enforcement before entering.

Not local police.

A federal task force from outside Illinois.

Damian turned toward Richard.

“You idiot.”

Richard shouted, “You did this!”

Damian swung toward him.

Luca moved.

The next several seconds happened quickly.

Agents entered from both sides.

Weapons were ordered down.

Damian tried to reach the rear exit.

He didn’t make it.

Richard screamed that he had diplomatic contacts, lawyers, rights, people who would regret this.

Nobody listened.

Isabella stood beside the altar.

The same place where she had been tied to a chair.

An agent approached.

“Ms. Carter?”

“Yes.”

“We need you outside.”

She looked at her father.

Richard stared back.

“Isabella.”

She stopped.

He sounded like her father again.

Not the businessman.

Not the conspirator.

Just the man who had once carried her on his shoulders at the lake.

“Please.”

Her eyes filled.

“I’m your father.”

She walked toward him.

For one moment, Luca wondered whether grief would pull her back.

Then she stopped several feet away.

“I know.”

Richard’s face softened.

“Then help me.”

Isabella shook her head.

“You had that same choice.”

“What?”

“To help me.”

He stared.

“When?”

“At the chapel.”

Her voice broke.

“When I begged you.”

Richard looked away.

Isabella wiped her tears.

“I hope someday you understand what that cost.”

She turned.

Richard called her name again.

She kept walking.

Outside, snow had begun falling.

Not heavily.

Softly.

Luca stood near the chapel steps.

Isabella approached.

“It’s over.”

“Part of it.”

“You always have to be realistic?”

“Usually.”

She looked back at the chapel.

Damian was being led toward an unmarked vehicle.

Richard followed separately.

“Are they going to prison?”

“There will be investigations. Charges. Trials.”

“So we don’t know.”

“No.”

She nodded.

“But the evidence is out?”

Luca checked his phone.

Elena’s message had arrived.

RELEASE CONFIRMED.

“Yes.”

Isabella closed her eyes.

She breathed.

Then she looked at Luca.

“You told me yesterday to wait.”

His expression changed.

“For what?”

She stepped closer.

“You remember.”

“I do.”

“Today is tomorrow.”

Before he could answer, she kissed him.

Not dramatically.

Not desperately.

Slowly.

Deliberately.

Luca stood completely still for half a second.

Then he touched her cheek.

Not pulling.

Not claiming.

Waiting.

Isabella kissed him again.

This time he answered.

When they finally separated, snow had settled in her hair.

“Still gratitude?” he asked quietly.

“No.”

“Grief?”

“Some.”

“Fear?”

“Yes.”

He almost smiled.

“And the rest?”

Isabella looked up at him.

“The rest is mine.”

For Luca Duca, that answer meant more than any declaration could have.
