The Call He Finally Answered · Chapter 5 of 6

Chapter 5

By My Life Story Editorial · Published · Updated

The first snow of the season fell over Chicago on a Thursday morning.

Harper stood beside the penthouse windows, watching white flakes settle against the dark river.

Her bruises had begun to fade.

Her ribs still ached when she laughed, and her doctor had warned that the concussion symptoms could linger.

But she was sleeping better.

For the first time in three years, she was not waking before dawn to check Dante's calendar.

That should have felt wonderful.

Instead, she felt restless.

Dante entered carrying two cups of coffee.

“Decaf,” he announced.

Harper sighed.

“You're becoming predictable.”

“Terrible accusation.”

He handed her a cup.

She noticed the exhaustion beneath his eyes.

“You didn't sleep.”

“I slept.”

“How long?”

He looked away.

“Dante.”

“Three hours.”

“That's not sleeping. That's briefly losing consciousness.”

He almost smiled.

Harper set down her coffee.

“What's happening?”

Dante hesitated.

Then he handed her a folder.

Inside were copies of financial records.

Victor had been transferring money through several shell companies for nearly five years.

Some of the funds appeared connected to fraudulent municipal contracts.

Other transfers involved businesses Dante had believed were legitimate.

Harper turned the pages.

“How much?”

“Enough to destroy everything I've built.”

She looked up.

“Everything?”

“My companies. My reputation. The jobs connected to them.”

Harper closed the folder.

“And Luca?”

Dante's expression darkened.

“Still missing.”

She studied him.

“You think Victor has him.”

“I think Luca got involved in something he couldn't control.”

“Then we need to find him.”

Dante looked at her.

“We?”

“Yes.”

“You're recovering.”

“And you're making that face again.”

“What face?”

“The one that says you're about to do something reckless and call it protecting me.”

Dante looked down.

Harper moved closer.

“I know you want to fix everything yourself. But you can't.”

He was silent.

She continued.

“You don't have to.”

Dante looked at her for a long moment.

Then he said something she had never expected to hear.

“I don't know how to do this.”

Harper's expression softened.

“Do what?”

“Trust someone else to handle a problem that could destroy my family.”

She reached for his hand.

“Start with one person.”

He looked at their joined hands.

Then he nodded.

That afternoon, Detective Bennett received a call from an unknown number.

The caller was Luca.

His voice shook.

“I want to talk.”

Bennett immediately arranged a meeting at a secure location.

Luca arrived with a split lip, bruised knuckles, and the hollow expression of a man who had not slept in days.

His attorney sat beside him.

Across the table were Bennett and a federal investigator.

Luca stared at his hands.

“Victor told me he could make my debts disappear.”

“What did he want in return?” Bennett asked.

“Access to Dante's financial system.”

Luca swallowed.

“I gave him my credentials.”

“Did you know he intended to forge Dante's authorization?”

“No. Not at first.”

“And Harper Reed?”

Luca closed his eyes.

“I knew Victor wanted her laptop.”

“Did you know he intended to hurt her?”

“No.”

Bennett leaned forward.

“Then why did you disappear?”

“Because I heard what happened.”

Luca's voice broke.

“Victor told me she was supposed to be frightened. He said she would hand over the file, and nobody would get seriously hurt.”

The investigator placed a photograph on the table.

It showed Harper in the hospital.

Luca turned away.

“I didn't know.”

Bennett waited.

After a long silence, Luca continued.

“I recorded Victor and Hale because I realized they were setting Dante up. I put the recording on Harper's storage device.”

“Why didn't you tell her?”

“Because Victor was watching me.”

“Why not go to the police?”

Luca gave a bitter laugh.

“Hale had people inside the city. I didn't know who I could trust.”

The investigator opened another folder.

“Do you have evidence of the financial transfers?”

Luca nodded.

“I can identify the accounts. I can explain how the documents were altered.”

“And will you testify?”

He hesitated.

Then he looked at Harper's photograph again.

“Yes.”

That evening, Dante received a call from Bennett.

She explained that Luca had surrendered and was cooperating with investigators.

Dante listened without speaking.

When the call ended, he remained seated in his study.

Harper found him there an hour later.

“Luca?”

Dante nodded.

“He gave Victor access.”

“Did he know about the attack?”

“He says he didn't.”

“Do you believe him?”

Dante looked at the family photograph on his desk.

It showed him and Luca standing beside Dante's father twenty years earlier.

“I don't know.”

Harper sat beside him.

“You can love someone and still hold them responsible.”

Dante looked at her.

“My father used to say loyalty was everything.”

“Loyalty matters,” Harper said. “But it doesn't erase what someone does.”

He exhaled.

“I kept giving Luca chances because I thought I was helping him.”

“Maybe you were helping him avoid consequences.”

Dante gave her a tired smile.

“You never make things easy.”

“You don't pay me to.”

“I pay you to tell me the truth.”

Harper's expression changed.

“Then here's the truth.”

She turned toward him.

“You can't keep running your life the way you have and expect the people around you to remain safe.”

Dante went still.

She continued.

“Victor used your reputation. Luca used your loyalty. And those men attacked me because they believed you'd protect your organization before you'd protect the truth.”

He looked away.

Harper's voice softened.

“I care about you, Dante. More than I should.”

He turned back.

She swallowed.

“But I won't spend the rest of my life waiting for someone to use me against you.”

The words hurt more than any threat he had ever received.

“Are you leaving?”

“I don't know.”

Dante stared at her.

For three years, he had believed Harper would always be there.

He had never considered that she might choose a life without him.

“What do you want me to do?” he asked.

Harper shook her head.

“I can't decide that for you.”

He looked down at his hands.

“Then I need to figure it out.”

The next morning, Dante called his attorneys.

He ordered an independent review of every company he owned.

He authorized full cooperation with the financial investigation and began separating his legitimate businesses from the criminal relationships that had shaped his adult life.

The process would be expensive.

It would expose decisions he had spent years avoiding.

And it would force him to confront men who had once called him family.

But Dante understood something he had refused to admit.

He could not build a future with Harper on foundations that kept putting her in danger.

Three days later, Victor Bellini sent him a message.

A single photograph.

It showed Evelyn Reed sitting beside a window at St. Anne's.

Beneath it were six words.

COME ALONE, OR SHE PAYS FIRST.

Dante stared at the screen.

Then he called Detective Bennett.
