The tunnel smelled like saltwater, rust, and old concrete.
Dominic moved slowly.
Marco followed several feet behind.
Only four men came with them.
No army.
No dramatic charge.
Just silence.
Dominic preferred it that way.
Every step brought him closer to the warehouse.
Every step also brought memories he did not want.
Bella running across the kitchen in socks.
Bella demanding he taste imaginary tea.
Bella falling asleep on the sofa while waiting for him to finish a meeting.
Elena standing at the piano, smiling when Dominic finally played three notes from a song his mother once loved.
He had resisted every moment.
Now he would have traded every building he owned to hear Bella ask one more ridiculous question.
At the warehouse, Bella could not sleep.
She sat against Elena.
“Mama?”
“Yes?”
“Is Dom scared?”
Elena thought carefully.
“Yes.”
Bella seemed surprised.
“Dom doesn’t get scared.”
“Everybody gets scared.”
“Even bosses?”
“Especially bosses sometimes.”
Bella considered that.
“Is he scared because of me?”
Elena kissed her hair.
“Because he loves you.”
Bella whispered, “I love him too.”
Elena closed her eyes.
“So do I.”
The words escaped before she could stop them.
Bella looked up.
“You love Dom?”
Elena almost laughed.
“Go to sleep.”
“That means yes.”
“You are three.”
“I know things.”
Elena smiled despite herself.
“Yes. You do.”
Footsteps sounded.
The door opened.
Anthony Russo entered.
Elena had seen him at the mansion.
He had eaten at Dominic’s table.
He had brought Bella a stuffed bear at Christmas.
Bella recognized him.
“Uncle Tony?”
Anthony stopped.
The name hit him unexpectedly.
Bella had heard Dominic call him that.
She held out one small hand.
“Can we go home?”
Anthony looked away.
Elena understood immediately.
“You.”
Anthony said nothing.
“You told them.”
His face hardened.
“You don’t understand.”
“You helped kidnap a child.”
“I was protecting Dominic.”
Elena stared at him.
“From what?”
“You.”
The answer was so absurd Elena almost laughed.
Anthony stepped closer.
“Before you came, Dominic understood what leadership required.”
“And now?”
“Now he cares.”
Elena shook her head.
“You make that sound like a disease.”
“In our world, it can be.”
Bella watched them.
“Uncle Tony?”
Anthony looked down.
“Why are you mean?”
He flinched.
Elena saw it.
For all his talk of strength, Anthony could not look at the child he had betrayed.
Bella reached into the pocket of Elena’s sweater.
Nothing.
Her face fell.
“Miss Rose is gone.”
Anthony’s eyes closed.
“She’s not gone,” Bella said. “Dom will get her.”
Anthony turned away.
Maybe for the first time, he understood what he had done.
At 3:17, Dominic reached the tunnel’s final branch.
The old blueprint showed an exit behind a maintenance room.
Marco touched his arm.
Footsteps above.
Two men.
Dominic waited.
The footsteps moved away.
They continued.
Twenty yards later, Dominic saw fresh light beneath an old metal door.
The warehouse.
Marco whispered, “We’re in.”
Dominic did not answer.
He pulled Miss Rose from his coat.
Her single button eye stared back.
“Almost there,” he whispered.
Marco heard him.
He said nothing.
Upstairs, Vincent received three calls in five minutes.
The first reported Moretti cars outside a nightclub.
The second said a shipping company refused to handle Colombo containers.
The third reported two allied captains had disappeared.
Vincent slammed the phone down.
Anthony entered.
“You’re losing control.”
Vincent looked at him.
“I’m losing patience.”
“Give them back.”
Vincent stared.
Anthony swallowed.
“The point was to teach Dominic a lesson.”
“The point was to take Red Hook.”
“That wasn’t our agreement.”
Vincent smiled.
“Anthony, men like you always make the same mistake.”
“What?”
“You think betrayal is a partnership.”
Anthony’s face changed.
Vincent leaned closer.
“It isn’t.”
He gestured toward a guard.
“Take him downstairs.”
Anthony stepped back.
“What are you doing?”
“Cleaning up.”
Two guards grabbed him.
Anthony fought.
“Vincent!”
The door closed.
In the hostage room, Elena heard shouting.
Then the lights flickered.
Once.
Twice.
Bella sat up.
“Mama?”
The lights went out.
Darkness.
Somebody cursed in the corridor.
Emergency lamps glowed red.
Elena’s heart began pounding.
Then she heard something.
Very faint.
Three knocks.
Pause.
Two knocks.
She froze.
Bella heard it too.
Her eyes widened.
It was their game.
Dominic used to knock on Bella’s bedroom door in patterns.
Three.
Pause.
Two.
Bella would answer with two.
Pause.
Three.
Elena covered Bella’s mouth gently before the child could shout.
She knocked against the floor.
Two.
Pause.
Three.
Silence.
Then—
Three.
Pause.
Two.
Bella began shaking with excitement.
Elena held her.
“Quiet.”
Outside the room, a guard opened the door.
“What was that?”
Elena looked confused.
“What?”
He stepped inside.
The second guard followed.
A sound came from farther down the hall.
Both men turned.
The door suddenly slammed.
Elena heard struggling outside.
Short.
Controlled.
Then silence.
The handle moved.
Elena stood in front of Bella.
The door opened.
Dominic stepped inside.
For one second, nobody moved.
His suit was dusty.
His hair disordered.
His face tight with exhaustion.
Miss Rose hung from one hand.
Bella screamed.
“DOM!”
She ran.
Dominic dropped to one knee.
Bella hit him so hard he almost fell backward.
Her arms wrapped around his neck.
Dominic closed his eyes.
Everything inside him broke.
“Hey, piccola.”
“You found Miss Rose!”
Dominic laughed and cried at the same time.
“Yes.”
“You found us!”
“I told you I would.”
Elena stood several feet away with one hand over her mouth.
Dominic looked at her.
Their eyes met.
There were a thousand things neither had said.
None mattered now.
Elena crossed the room.
Dominic stood.
She threw her arms around him.
He held both of them.
Bella between them.
For the first time in his adult life, Dominic Moretti did not care who saw him cry.
Marco looked away.
“Boss.”
Dominic opened his eyes.
“We need to move.”
He nodded.
But before they could leave, a voice sounded from the hall.
“You really thought it would be that easy?”
Vincent Colombo stood at the far end.
Anthony was beside him.
A gun pressed against Anthony’s back.
Guards appeared behind them.
Dominic moved instantly, placing himself between Vincent and Elena.
Vincent smiled.
“Now this is the Dominic I expected.”
Dominic stared.
“Let them walk.”
“Give me Red Hook.”
“You can have it.”
Everyone went still.
Even Vincent looked surprised.
Dominic continued.
“Warehouses. Docks. Whatever you want.”
Marco stared at him.
Vincent smiled.
“For them?”
“Yes.”
“That easy?”
Dominic looked back at Bella.
“Yes.”
Vincent laughed.
“There. Finally.”
Anthony stared at Dominic.
Something like shame appeared on his face.
Vincent continued.
“The great Dominic Moretti surrendering for a maid and a child.”
Dominic’s expression remained calm.
“You say that like I should be embarrassed.”
Vincent’s smile faded.
“I spent twenty years owning things,” Dominic said. “Buildings. Businesses. Men’s loyalty. Fear.”
He looked at Elena.
“None of it ever cared whether I came home.”
Then Bella.
“She does.”
Bella clutched Miss Rose.
Dominic looked back at Vincent.
“So yes. Take Red Hook.”
Vincent hesitated.
He had expected rage.
Not certainty.
That uncertainty became his mistake.
Anthony suddenly drove his shoulder backward into the guard behind him.
Chaos erupted.
Marco moved.
Elena pulled Bella down.
Dominic lunged toward Vincent.
The warehouse exploded into noise.
But within seconds, sirens sounded outside.
Not Moretti sirens.
Police.
Federal.
Vincent froze.
Dominic smiled.
“You called the cops?” Vincent whispered.
“No.”
Marco did.
Earlier that evening.
Evidence of kidnapping.
Security footage.
Vehicle plates.
Vincent’s known properties.
For once, Dominic had chosen a solution his father would have mocked.
He had chosen to end the war without creating another generation of graves.
Vincent stared at him.
“You brought law enforcement into this?”
Dominic looked at Bella.
“I brought whoever gets my family home.”
The warehouse doors crashed open.
And for the first time that night, Vincent Colombo looked afraid.
