Chapter 5

By My Life Story Editorial · Published · Updated

Ryan disappeared three days before he was scheduled to appear for questioning.

Not internationally.

Not dramatically.

He simply stopped answering his attorneys.

His apartment was empty.

His phone went dead.

One company SUV vanished.

Investigators issued alerts.

Sophia didn’t sleep that night.

At 2:13 in the morning, she sat on the couch in Adrian’s private office while rain struck the windows forty-two floors above Chicago.

“You should go home,” he said.

Sophia laughed.

“Excellent suggestion while my obsessive ex is missing.”

“There are security teams at your apartment.”

“I know.”

“At your mother’s.”

“I know.”

“Then sleep.”

“I can’t.”

Adrian poured coffee instead.

Sophia watched him.

“You really don’t sleep, do you?”

“Occasionally.”

“Caruso says once in 2009.”

“Caruso talks too much.”

For a few seconds, the tension eased.

Then Sophia’s phone buzzed.

Unknown number.

Her pulse stopped.

A photograph appeared.

The front of Moretti Consulting.

Taken minutes earlier.

Text beneath it:

Come outside alone.

Adrian saw her expression.

“What?”

She showed him.

His face changed instantly.

“No.”

Sophia stood.

“He’s here.”

“Security will handle it.”

“Wait.”

Another message.

Or I send your mother the recording.

Sophia frowned.

“What recording?”

A file arrived.

She pressed play.

Her own voice.

Crying.

Years earlier.

Begging Ryan to stop.

Then Ryan’s voice.

“You know you make me do this.”

Sophia’s stomach twisted.

It was from one of the worst nights of their relationship.

She had forgotten Ryan recorded it.

Adrian reached toward the phone.

She pulled it back.

“No.”

“Sophia.”

“He wants me ashamed.”

“I know.”

“He thinks this recording controls me.”

Another text arrived.

Everybody can hear what you really are.

Sophia stared at the words.

Then something unexpected happened.

She stopped being afraid.

Ryan had reached backward because the present no longer belonged to him.

His bank accounts were frozen.

His employees were cooperating.

His reputation was collapsing.

So he was using old shame.

The last weapon he had.

Sophia sat back down.

Adrian watched her.

“What are you doing?”

“Nothing.”

Ryan sent another message.

Five minutes.

Sophia replied for the first time in weeks.

No.

Three dots appeared immediately.

You want everyone to hear you begging?

Sophia typed:

Send it.

No response.

Adrian looked at her.

Sophia’s hands were shaking, but her voice wasn’t.

“He can’t blackmail me with something I’m not ashamed of anymore.”

Adrian’s expression shifted.

Not pity.

Respect.

Ryan replied.

You stupid—

Then stopped.

The message never finished.

Security had found his vehicle two blocks away.

But Ryan wasn’t inside.

Police searched surrounding streets.

Nothing.

At 3:07, an alarm triggered inside Moretti Consulting’s underground garage.

Sophia stood.

Adrian grabbed her arm instinctively.

Immediately, he released it.

That tiny movement mattered.

Even during danger, he remembered.

Caruso’s voice came through Adrian’s phone.

“He’s inside the lower garage.”

Adrian’s expression hardened.

“Lock Sophia in my office.”

“No.”

Both men ignored her.

Sophia stepped between Adrian and the door.

“No.”

“Sophia, this isn’t a debate.”

“It absolutely is.”

“He is unstable.”

“He came here for me.”

“Exactly.”

“And if you go downstairs, what does he get?”

Adrian stopped.

Sophia’s mind was moving quickly now.

“Ryan believes you’re the final obstacle.”

“He’s wrong.”

“I know. But he doesn’t.”

She looked at the security screens.

“Turn on the garage audio.”

Ryan’s voice could be heard shouting.

“MORETTI!”

He sounded desperate.

Gone was the charming developer.

Gone was the charity-dinner smile.

“COME DOWN HERE!”

Adrian stared at the screen.

Sophia whispered, “He wants you.”

Ryan continued screaming.

“You think you won?”

Sophia looked at Adrian.

“Don’t give him what he wants.”

Police were already entering the garage from the east side.

Ryan didn’t know.

He paced between parked cars.

Then shouted:

“She belongs to me!”

Sophia’s entire body went still.

There it was.

Recorded.

Clear.

Adrian glanced at her.

Ryan kept talking.

“I built her life! I paid her bills! I made her useful!”

Sophia felt tears sting her eyes.

Not because she believed him.

Because she finally understood how little he had ever loved her.

Ryan had never wanted Sophia.

He wanted ownership.

Then Ryan said something worse.

“You should’ve seen her before me! Nobody wanted her!”

Sophia laughed quietly.

Adrian looked at her.

“He really believes that.”

“Yes.”

“That I existed because he chose me.”

“Yes.”

She wiped one tear.

“God.”

Police moved closer on the security feed.

Ryan saw them.

His face changed.

He backed toward his SUV.

Officers shouted commands.

Ryan ignored them.

Then he reached inside his jacket.

Everything happened quickly.

Adrian moved toward the door.

Sophia stopped breathing.

Police surrounded Ryan.

Commands echoed.

Ryan froze.

For one terrible second, Sophia thought he would make the worst possible choice.

Then his hand slowly emerged.

Empty.

He dropped to his knees.

Officers restrained him.

Sophia stared at the screen.

Ryan Mitchell had spent years trying to make her feel small.

Now he was kneeling on a concrete garage floor while cameras captured every word he had screamed.

He hadn’t been destroyed by Adrian Moretti.

He had destroyed himself.

Sophia sat down.

Her legs suddenly felt weak.

Adrian remained beside her.

Not touching.

Not speaking.

Just there.

After several minutes, Sophia said, “Is it over?”

“No.”

She laughed through tears.

“Of course you’d say that.”

“It would be dishonest to say otherwise.”

She nodded.

There would be hearings.

Investigations.

Lawyers.

Financial restoration.

Possible trial.

Trauma didn’t disappear because handcuffs appeared.

Adrian crouched several feet away.

“But tonight?”

Sophia looked at him.

“Tonight, he can’t reach you.”

She breathed.

Slowly.

Deeply.

For the first time in years, she believed it.

Later that morning, investigators searched Ryan’s SUV.

They found forged identity documents.

Cash.

Two prepaid phones.

A laptop.

Sophia’s old photographs.

Her mother’s schedule.

And handwritten notes mapping Sophia’s daily routines.

One page contained a heading:

WAYS TO BRING SOPHIA BACK

Underneath were categories.

Money.

Mother.

Career.

Fear.

Shame.

Jealousy.

Isolation.

Sophia stared at that page longer than anything else.

Her relationship had become a strategy document.

She handed it back to investigators.

“I want this preserved.”

“It will be.”

By afternoon, Ryan was formally charged with multiple offenses related to fraud, stalking, identity misuse, intimidation, and financial crimes.

Additional charges remained possible.

The media went wild.

But Sophia didn’t watch.

She went home.

Her apartment had been professionally checked.

The hidden recording device was gone.

Locks replaced again.

New security installed.

Sophia stood in the bedroom doorway.

For months, the room had felt contaminated.

Someone had watched her sleep.

Photographed her.

Recorded her.

She considered moving.

Then changed her mind.

Leaving because she wanted something new was freedom.

Leaving because Ryan made her afraid was still obedience.

So Sophia opened every curtain.

Let sunlight flood the room.

Then she took the bedding Ryan had once bought her and carried it to the trash.

The following Monday, she returned to work.

At 7:45 exactly.

Coffee in hand.

Marcus smiled.

“Morning, Ms. Bennett.”

“Morning.”

When she reached her desk, something was different.

Her nameplate.

It no longer read:

SOPHIA BENNETT — EXECUTIVE ASSISTANT

It read:

SOPHIA BENNETT — DIRECTOR OF OPERATIONS

Sophia stared.

Adrian emerged from his office.

“What is this?”

“A promotion.”

“You can’t just promote me.”

“I offered it six months ago.”

“You never offered it.”

“I instructed HR to.”

Sophia crossed her arms.

“Evan?”

Adrian sighed.

“Apparently Evan failed to pass it along.”

Sophia’s mouth fell open.

Ryan had interfered again.

“So I was offered a promotion?”

“Twice.”

She laughed.

Then laughed harder.

Adrian watched her.

“Is that a no?”

Sophia looked at the new nameplate.

Three years ago, she would have refused.

Too visible.

Too much responsibility.

Too much chance of failure.

Ryan’s voice had lived inside every decision.

Now Sophia picked up the nameplate.

“No.”

Adrian’s expression remained neutral.

She smiled.

“It’s a yes.”

And for once, the biggest decision in Sophia Bennett’s life required nobody’s permission but her own.
