Chapter 6

By My Life Story Editorial · Published · Updated

Norah had never been so frightened.

Adrian stood between her and the backyard.

Another man approached from the hallway.

She was trapped.

But she refused to let them see her panic.

“What do you want?” she asked.

Adrian glanced at her stomach.

“Just a conversation.”

“Then talk.”

He smiled.

“Not here.”

Norah stepped backward.

“I'm not going anywhere with you.”

Adrian's expression hardened.

“Miss Hayes, I suggest you cooperate.”

Norah's hand moved protectively over her belly.

The baby kicked.

She forced herself to breathe.

“I'm pregnant,” she said. “If you hurt me, you're hurting an innocent child.”

Adrian looked at her for a long moment.

Then he lowered his voice.

“Nobody needs to get hurt.”

Norah did not believe him.

But she needed time.

Time for Dominic to arrive.

Time for someone to notice.

Time for her baby to remain safe.

“What does Salazar want?”

Adrian took a folded envelope from his jacket.

“He wants Russo to sign over control of a shipping operation.”

Norah stared at him.

“You broke into my house over a business deal?”

“It's more complicated than that.”

“No,” she answered. “It isn't.”

Adrian's smile disappeared.

Norah looked directly at him.

“You're using a pregnant woman to threaten someone you can't control.”

For a moment, Adrian seemed genuinely surprised.

Then he gestured toward the back door.

“Come with me.”

Norah shook her head.

“No.”

The man behind her moved closer.

Norah's heart raced.

Then, from somewhere outside, a car door slammed.

Adrian turned.

A voice called from the driveway.

“Police! Step away from the house!”

Norah nearly collapsed with relief.

Adrian cursed.

The man behind her moved toward the hallway.

Norah stepped away from both of them.

“Stay where you are!” an officer shouted.

Within moments, the house filled with police officers.

Adrian raised his hands.

Norah pressed herself against the kitchen counter.

Her legs trembled.

She could barely hear the officers speaking.

Then Dominic appeared in the doorway.

His face was pale.

“Norah.”

She looked at him.

And suddenly, she could no longer hold herself together.

“Dominic.”

He crossed the kitchen.

She stepped into his arms.

He held her carefully.

“Are you hurt?”

She shook her head.

“The baby?”

“I don't know.”

Dominic immediately looked toward the officer beside him.

“We need medical assistance.”

Norah gripped his shirt.

“Please don't leave.”

He looked at her.

“I'm not going anywhere.”

At the hospital, Norah lay on an examination bed while a doctor checked the baby's heartbeat.

Dominic sat beside her.

He had not released her hand since they arrived.

Norah stared at the monitor.

The familiar rhythmic sound filled the room.

Strong.

Steady.

Alive.

The doctor smiled.

“Your baby's heartbeat is reassuring. We'll continue monitoring you, but everything looks good so far.”

Norah began to cry.

Dominic lowered his head.

For several seconds, he did not speak.

Then he kissed her hand.

“Thank you,” he whispered.

Norah looked at him.

“For what?”

“For keeping yourself safe.”

She shook her head.

“I was terrified.”

“I know.”

“I thought they were going to take me.”

Dominic's expression tightened.

Norah squeezed his hand.

“But I kept thinking about the baby. And Lily.”

He looked at her.

“And you.”

Dominic went still.

Norah swallowed.

“I kept thinking that I hadn't told you something.”

“What?”

She looked at their joined hands.

“That I love you.”

Dominic stared at her.

The words hung between them.

Norah felt suddenly vulnerable.

She had not planned to say them.

Not in a hospital room.

Not after being threatened.

Not while her entire body still trembled from fear.

But the truth had escaped.

And she could not take it back.

Dominic moved closer.

“Norah.”

She looked up.

“I love you too.”

Her eyes filled again.

He touched her cheek.

“I think I've loved you for longer than I was willing to admit.”

Norah let out a shaky laugh.

“You have a terrible way of showing it.”

Dominic smiled sadly.

“I know.”

She leaned forward.

He kissed her gently.

For the first time, there was no fear of the morning after.

No unspoken agreement to pretend nothing had happened.

Only the quiet understanding that they had nearly lost something precious.

The police investigation moved quickly.

Adrian and the second intruder were arrested.

Their phones and messages provided evidence linking the attempted abduction to Victor Salazar.

Teresa's statement helped investigators establish how Norah's personal information had been obtained.

Dominic cooperated with the investigation.

But the attack forced him to confront a truth he had avoided for years.

His criminal connections were no longer merely a danger to himself.

They were endangering the people he loved.

He could not continue living the same life and expect a different outcome.

Three days after the hospital visit, Dominic met Norah in the garden of the temporary house.

She was sitting beneath a tree with a glass of lemonade.

He sat beside her.

“I need to tell you something.”

Norah looked up.

“What happened?”

“I've been speaking with my attorney.”

“About Salazar?”

“About everything.”

He took a breath.

“I'm stepping away from the organization.”

Norah stared at him.

“What?”

“I've started the process of separating myself from the businesses and people involved in criminal activity.”

She searched his face.

“Dominic, can you really do that?”

“Not overnight.”

He looked toward the house.

“There are legal consequences I have to face. Investigations. Financial records. People who won't be happy.”

Norah remained silent.

“But I can't keep telling myself that I'm protecting my family while the life I've chosen puts them in danger.”

Her eyes filled.

“What about Lily?”

“She deserves a normal childhood.”

“And the baby?”

Dominic looked at her stomach.

“Our child deserves one too.”

Norah took his hand.

“And what about you?”

He smiled faintly.

“I'd like to find out who I am when I'm not trying to control everything.”

Norah laughed softly.

“That could take a while.”

“I know.”

She leaned against his shoulder.

For a long time, they sat together beneath the tree.

The future remained uncertain.

There would be difficult conversations.

Legal proceedings.

Decisions about where to live.

Questions about how to build a family from the complicated circumstances that had brought them together.

But for the first time, Norah no longer felt that she was facing those questions alone.

Two weeks later, Dominic brought Lily to visit.

The little girl raced through the front door.

“Nora!”

Norah knelt carefully.

Lily threw her arms around her.

“I missed you!”

“I missed you too, Bug.”

Lily pulled back.

“Daddy says you're coming home.”

Norah looked toward Dominic.

He smiled.

“If you want to,” he said.

Norah looked at Lily.

Then at the small house.

Then at the man standing in the doorway.

She smiled.

“Actually, I think we might all be going somewhere new.”

Lily frowned.

“Where?”

Norah placed a hand over her stomach.

“Somewhere with a backyard.”

Lily's eyes widened.

“And a swing?”

Dominic laughed.

“Yes, princess. A swing.”

“And a room for the baby?”

Norah nodded.

“And a room for the baby.”

Lily thought about that.

Then she looked at Dominic.

“Can we go now?”

He smiled.

“Soon.”

Lily hugged Norah again.

And as Norah held her, she realized that the family she had once been afraid to imagine was finally beginning to take shape.
