Chapter 3

Declan moved first.

He pulled Claire behind him as the handle continued turning.

The door opened.

Vanessa Caldwell stood on the other side.

Her eyes moved from Claire to Nolan, then to the brass key on the table.

For the first time since Claire had met her, Vanessa looked genuinely frightened.

“What are you doing here?” Declan asked.

Vanessa closed the door.

“I could ask the same thing.”

Claire stepped around Declan.

“Did you know my father?”

Vanessa stared at her.

“No.”

“Then why are you looking at his key like you recognize it?”

“I recognize Grant’s obsession with it.”

Claire went still.

Vanessa continued.

“For months, he has been asking questions about something numbered 417.”

“Why?”

“I don’t know.”

“You expect me to believe that?”

Vanessa’s jaw tightened.

“You think because I insulted your dress and looked down on you that I’m part of whatever this is?”

“I think you’ve given me no reason to trust you.”

“Fair.”

Claire had not expected that answer.

Nolan shifted in his chair.

“Vanessa knows more than she’s saying.”

Vanessa turned sharply.

“You should be careful.”

“No,” Nolan said. “You should.”

Declan closed the distance.

“What does 417 refer to?”

Nolan hesitated.

Then finally answered.

“A private storage box.”

“At a bank?”

“No.”

“Where?”

“Port records facility.”

Claire stared at him.

“Tacoma?”

Nolan nodded.

Her heart raced.

“Then why come here?”

“Because Thomas realized the records involved both the Mercer and Caldwell shipping networks.”

Declan’s expression hardened.

“My father?”

“Victor’s signature appears on several manifests.”

“Appears?”

Nolan looked at him carefully.

“I never said Victor signed them.”

Declan went silent.

Claire caught the distinction immediately.

“Someone forged his signature.”

“Maybe.”

“Who?”

Nolan looked toward the door.

“Grant.”

Vanessa closed her eyes briefly.

Claire noticed.

“You knew.”

Vanessa shook her head.

“I suspected.”

“Everyone around here seems to love that word.”

Vanessa looked at her.

“Grant has worked for my father for seventeen years. He knows every legitimate route, every private account, every person who can be pressured.”

“Why would he frame Victor Mercer?”

“To start a war,” Declan said.

Vanessa looked toward him.

“Exactly.”

Claire stared between them.

The wedding was not creating peace.

It was covering something.

Natalie’s frightened warning suddenly made sense.

“The wedding isn’t about joining your families,” Claire said.

Vanessa’s expression changed.

“No.”

“Then what is it about?”

Vanessa hesitated.

Declan’s patience vanished.

“Answer her.”

“It’s about control of the Atlantic shipping routes.”

Claire frowned.

Vanessa continued.

“My father thinks this marriage gives us stability. Evan thinks he’s marrying Natalie because they love each other, which they do. But Grant has been using the agreement to consolidate management access across both companies.”

Declan swore quietly.

“With shared systems,” Claire said.

Vanessa nodded.

“Exactly.”

Claire looked at Nolan.

“My father discovered it.”

“Yes.”

“And Grant made him disappear.”

Nolan looked away.

Claire’s stomach turned.

“Did you help?”

Nolan’s face collapsed.

“I helped him run.”

The room went silent.

Claire stepped closer.

“Where?”

“I don’t know.”

“You just said—”

“I arranged transportation. Your father refused to tell me the final destination.”

“Why?”

“Because he said anyone who knew could be forced to reveal it.”

Claire’s voice broke.

“Did he know people would come after me?”

Nolan’s silence answered.

Anger replaced grief.

“He left me there.”

“No.”

“He disappeared while strangers came to my apartment and demanded money.”

“He thought the fake gambling story would make Grant believe Thomas was running from ordinary debt.”

Claire laughed without humor.

“Well, that worked beautifully.”

“Claire—”

“My mother thought her husband abandoned her.”

Nolan lowered his eyes.

“I know.”

“No, you don’t.”

Declan touched Claire’s shoulder.

She pulled away.

“Don’t.”

The word hit him harder than she expected.

Good.

She wanted it to.

“You knew his name was connected to your family before you approached me.”

“Yes.”

“You saw me working double shifts.”

“Yes.”

“You knew I was desperate.”

“Yes.”

“And still you made me believe this was just about being your date.”

“I believed bringing you here would expose whoever was watching you.”

Claire stared at him.

“So I was bait.”

Declan’s face tightened.

“No.”

“That’s exactly what I was.”

“I would never have brought you if I believed you were in immediate danger.”

“You do not get points for deciding what level of danger is acceptable for me.”

He fell silent.

Vanessa watched them.

For once, she did not look superior.

She looked ashamed.

Claire grabbed the key.

“I’m leaving.”

Declan stepped forward.

“Not alone.”

“You lost the right to tell me what I do.”

“I’m not telling you. I’m asking you not to walk outside while Grant knows you have that key.”

Claire hated him for making sense.

Again.

Then the lights went out.

Darkness swallowed the room.

A second later, an alarm began blaring through the estate.

Declan pulled Claire behind the heavy desk.

Glass shattered somewhere in the corridor.

Someone shouted.

Security radios crackled.

Emergency lights came on in dim red.

Nolan stood.

“Grant.”

The door slammed open.

One of Declan’s men rushed inside.

“Sir, Hale is gone.”

Declan’s expression became deadly calm.

“Gone where?”

“His car never left. We think he’s still on the property.”

Claire looked toward Vanessa.

“Where would he go?”

Vanessa’s face drained.

“The archive room.”

“What’s there?”

“My father keeps original merger documents and port agreements.”

Declan moved toward the door.

Claire followed.

“No.”

She glared at him.

“You don’t get to hide me in a room anymore.”

“Claire.”

“If my father risked everything because of those documents, I’m seeing them.”

Something in Declan changed.

He nodded.

“All right.”

They moved through the darkened estate.

Security escorted them past confused wedding guests.

Claire noticed Natalie near the staircase, standing beside Evan.

Natalie caught her eye.

Then subtly pointed toward a corridor.

The archive wing.

Grant had gone that way.

Claire followed.

They reached the archive room.

The door was open.

Papers covered the floor.

A safe stood empty.

Vanessa entered behind them.

“He took something.”

Claire noticed ash inside a stone fireplace.

Documents were burning.

She rushed toward it.

Declan caught her arm before she touched the flames.

“Wait.”

He used fireplace tools to pull a half-burned folder free.

Claire saw a familiar logo.

Tacoma port records.

Declan opened what remained.

Several pages had burned beyond recognition.

One had not.

Claire stared at the date.

Six months earlier.

The day before Thomas disappeared.

Then she saw the notation at the bottom.

Storage Transfer: 417.

Below it was a second number.

A telephone number.

Claire pulled out her phone.

Declan stopped her.

“Use mine.”

“Why?”

“Because Grant may have cloned yours.”

Claire stared at him.

He handed her the device.

She dialed.

One ring.

Two.

Three.

A man answered.

No greeting.

Claire suddenly could not breathe.

“Dad?”

Silence.

Then the line disconnected.

Her knees nearly gave out.

Declan caught her.

She did not push him away this time.

“That was him.”

“Are you sure?”

“I know my father’s breathing.”

Vanessa stared.

“He’s alive?”

Claire looked at the phone.

Then a text message appeared.

UNKNOWN NUMBER:

DO NOT COME LOOKING FOR ME. GRANT HAS SOMEONE INSIDE MERCER SECURITY. TRUST NO ONE.

Everyone in the room went silent.

Declan slowly turned toward his guards.

For the first time all night, Claire saw genuine uncertainty in his face.

Grant was not simply inside the estate.

He had help.

And whoever was helping him stood close enough to Declan Mercer to know everything they were doing.
