Mafia Hearts

The Question After Her Refusal · Chapter 4 of 6

Chapter 4

By My Life Story Editorial · Published · Updated

By Tuesday morning, reporters were camped outside Moretti Holdings.

The missing money had leaked.

Claire’s suspension had leaked.

Even Julian’s rejected proposal had leaked.

The headlines practically wrote themselves.

MORETTI HEIR HUMILIATED HOURS BEFORE $28M SCANDAL.

EXECUTIVE REJECTS BILLIONAIRE—THEN ACCUSED OF STEALING MILLIONS.

FAMILY ROMANCE OR CORPORATE BETRAYAL?

Claire sat in Gabriel’s private office and tossed a newspaper onto the table.

“At least they used a flattering picture.”

Gabriel didn’t smile.

He had spent the last eighteen hours on calls with banks, attorneys, contractors, investors, and board members.

Victor Dane had vanished.

His Manhattan apartment was empty.

His phone was disconnected.

Evan Cole had disappeared too.

The three construction loans remained dangerously close to default.

If lenders enforced their clauses, the waterfront project could collapse.

Thousands of workers would lose jobs.

Hundreds of businesses would lose contracts.

And Moretti Holdings could lose nearly half a billion dollars.

Claire stood over a conference table covered with financial documents.

“This isn’t random.”

Julian sat opposite her.

“What?”

“The transfers.”

“They look pretty random to me.”

“No.”

Claire arranged several pages.

“Look at the dates.”

Julian leaned closer.

“Every transfer happened before a major construction payment.”

Gabriel looked up.

Claire pointed.

“Victor wasn’t just stealing money. He was creating liquidity gaps.”

“To make us borrow,” Julian said.

“Yes.”

Gabriel came closer.

“And the emergency loan clauses?”

“Exactly.”

Claire felt the pieces aligning.

“He wanted the company dependent on short-term financing.”

Matteo entered.

“Which means whoever owns the debt eventually owns us.”

Claire turned.

“Who bought the loans?”

“We’re tracing it.”

“Russo.”

Gabriel’s expression tightened.

Matteo nodded.

“Indirectly.”

Julian swore.

Adrian Russo wasn’t trying to embarrass Gabriel.

He was attempting a corporate takeover disguised as a financial collapse.

Claire walked toward the windows.

“And I was the perfect person to blame.”

Gabriel’s eyes followed her.

“Because you controlled the project.”

“And because I mattered to you.”

Silence.

Julian looked down.

Gabriel didn’t deny it.

Claire continued.

“If everyone believed I betrayed you, you would stop trusting the system I built.”

“Yes.”

“You’d make emotional decisions.”

“Yes.”

“You might even shut the project down yourself.”

Gabriel nodded slowly.

“That was the plan.”

Julian stood.

“Then we expose Russo.”

“Not yet,” Claire said.

Both men looked at her.

“We need proof.”

Matteo smiled.

“That sentence is becoming her catchphrase.”

Claire ignored him.

“Victor connects everything. Find him.”

Gabriel’s security team spent hours searching.

At three in the afternoon, Samuel received a call.

Victor wanted to negotiate.

He offered evidence against Russo in exchange for immunity and protection.

Gabriel’s answer was immediate.

“No.”

Claire turned.

“Gabriel.”

“He tried to take you.”

“He also knows everything.”

“I don’t care.”

“Yes, you do.”

“I care that he attempted to put you inside a car.”

Julian stepped forward.

“And I care that he’s the reason thousands of people could lose their jobs.”

Gabriel looked at his son.

Julian held his gaze.

“This isn’t only about Claire.”

Claire expected tension.

Instead Gabriel’s expression changed.

Pride.

Small, but visible.

“Fine,” he said.

Samuel arranged the meeting in a federal attorney’s conference room.

Neutral ground.

No weapons.

No private security inside.

Victor arrived looking ten years older.

He sat across from Claire, Gabriel, Julian, Samuel, and two federal investigators.

For several moments, nobody spoke.

Finally Claire said, “Why me?”

Victor looked at her.

“You made him weak.”

Gabriel’s jaw tightened.

Claire remained calm.

“How?”

“Before you, Gabriel made decisions like his father. Cold. Efficient. Predictable.”

“And after me?”

Victor laughed bitterly.

“He started asking who would be hurt.”

Claire looked toward Gabriel.

Victor continued.

“You convinced him not to close the Newark distribution center.”

“Because two hundred people would have lost their jobs.”

“You convinced him to settle the Harbor labor dispute.”

“Because they deserved safer working conditions.”

“You changed him.”

Gabriel’s voice became low.

“You thought compassion was weakness.”

“I thought weakness was weakness.”

Julian leaned forward.

“And Russo?”

Victor looked at him.

“Adrian understood what Gabriel had forgotten. Business is war.”

“No,” Claire said. “War destroys things. Business is supposed to build them.”

Victor looked almost amused.

“That is exactly why he wanted you removed.”

Claire glanced at the investigators.

“Tell them everything.”

Victor did.

Adrian Russo had approached him fourteen months earlier.

Victor had already grown resentful toward Claire, believing Gabriel relied too heavily on her judgment.

Russo offered money.

Then leverage.

Then partnership.

Evan Cole provided security credentials.

Victor provided archived employee information and financial access.

They created Claire Bennett Holdings.

Moved stolen funds.

Manufactured messages.

Watched Claire.

And then they discovered the secret none of them expected.

Gabriel loved her.

Claire’s breath caught.

Victor continued.

“At first, we thought Julian dating Claire complicated things.”

Julian’s expression darkened.

“Then we realized it made everything easier.”

“How?” Julian asked.

“Because Gabriel would never interfere.”

Julian looked at his father.

Victor smiled faintly.

“Gabriel Moretti would sacrifice almost anything for his son.”

Claire whispered, “Including me.”

Gabriel didn’t respond.

Victor nodded.

“Russo believed eventually Claire would marry Julian.”

“And if I did?”

“We’d reveal the theft afterward. Julian would believe she used him. Gabriel would believe she infiltrated the family. The two of you would tear each other apart.”

Julian went pale.

“And when she rejected me?”

Victor shrugged.

“Even better.”

Claire felt sick.

Everything personal had become a weapon.

Every hesitation.

Every feeling.

Every secret.

Victor turned toward Gabriel.

“You spent your life making people afraid of what you could take from them.”

Gabriel’s eyes became cold.

“And?”

“Russo figured out the only thing more powerful was discovering what someone was afraid to lose.”

He looked at Claire.

No one spoke.

Finally one investigator asked, “Where is Russo?”

Victor shook his head.

“I don’t know.”

Gabriel leaned forward.

“Then you’re useless.”

Victor smiled.

“I know where the remaining money is.”

Claire’s attention sharpened.

“Where?”

“In a holding company.”

“Controlled by?”

“Russo.”

“Can we freeze it?”

Victor hesitated.

“Yes.”

Gabriel studied him.

“What aren’t you saying?”

Victor’s eyes moved toward Claire.

“There’s a condition.”

“What?”

“The account releases automatically if a specific server goes offline.”

Claire frowned.

“A dead-man switch?”

“Essentially.”

Julian asked, “Where’s the server?”

Victor swallowed.

“Harbor East.”

The unfinished waterfront complex.

Gabriel stood.

“Get people there.”

Victor shook his head.

“You’re too late.”

Gabriel froze.

“Why?”

“Russo scheduled demolition testing tonight.”

Claire stared.

“What?”

Several abandoned warehouses on the site had been approved for controlled structural removal.

If the wrong building came down—

“The server is inside Warehouse Nine,” Victor said.

Claire stood.

“That warehouse isn’t scheduled for demolition.”

“It is now.”

Gabriel’s phone was already in his hand.

“No one goes near the site.”

Victor’s laugh stopped him.

“You don’t understand.”

“What?”

“Russo moved the server after the plan failed.”

“Where?”

Victor looked straight at Claire.

“Your project office.”

Claire went cold.

Her project office sat on the second floor of Warehouse Nine.

If the building were destroyed, the server would disappear with it.

Along with the evidence proving Claire innocent.

Gabriel issued orders instantly.

But Claire was already thinking ahead.

“Victor.”

He looked at her.

“How does the trigger work?”

“Remote command.”

“Can it be stopped?”

“Only locally.”

Gabriel turned toward her.

“No.”

“I haven’t said anything.”

“You’re thinking it.”

“The server has to be shut down manually.”

“No.”

“There are backup financial records there.”

“No.”

“Gabriel—”

“No.”

Julian stood.

“She’s right.”

Gabriel looked at his son as though betrayed.

Julian continued.

“We don’t send Claire. But somebody has to go.”

“I’ll go.”

Claire and Julian both answered.

“No.”

For one absurd second, the three of them stared at one another.

Samuel muttered, “This family needs professional help.”

Even one federal investigator nearly smiled.

Eventually, a tactical team was dispatched.

Warehouse Nine was evacuated.

Demolition crews were stopped.

But when agents entered Claire’s project office, they found nothing.

The server was gone.

Only one item remained.

A black envelope.

Inside was a handwritten note.

Gabriel read it first.

His face changed.

Claire took it.

ONE LAST MEETING.

MIDNIGHT.

CLAIRE COMES ALONE.

OR EVERYTHING BURNS.

Julian tore the note from her hands.

“Absolutely not.”

Gabriel’s answer was colder.

“He won’t get within a mile of her.”

Claire stared at the words.

Everything burns.

Then she realized something.

“The server isn’t his leverage.”

Gabriel looked at her.

“What?”

“I am.”

Julian frowned.

“Claire.”

“Russo knows you’ll protect me instead of chasing the money.”

Gabriel said nothing.

“That’s what he wants.”

She looked at both Moretti men.

“He’s still trying to make you choose.”

Julian’s face hardened.

“Then we stop playing his game.”

Claire nodded.

“Yes.”

For the first time since the night of the proposal, all three stood on the same side of the room.

Not father.

Son.

Woman between them.

A team.

And that was precisely what Adrian Russo had never expected.
