Mafia Hearts

The Question in Adrian's Hallway · Chapter 5 of 6

Chapter 5

By My Life Story Editorial · Published · Updated

The first thing I heard was glass breaking.

The second was Adrian shouting my name.

I sat upright.

Mia woke beside me.

“Mommy?”

The lights went out.

My blood turned cold.

Then emergency lights flickered red along the corridor.

“Stay with me.”

I grabbed Mia and her elephant.

The bedroom door opened.

I nearly screamed.

Marcus entered.

“Move.”

“What happened?”

“Security breach.”

“Where’s Adrian?”

“Handling it.”

Gunshots echoed somewhere far below.

Mia started crying.

I covered her ears.

Marcus led us through a hidden doorway behind a bookshelf.

I stared.

“There’s a passage?”

“Mr. Kane likes options.”

We entered a narrow stairwell.

Two guards followed.

“Where are we going?”

“Safe room.”

Another gunshot.

Closer.

Mia buried her face against me.

“Mommy, I’m scared.”

“I know.”

I was terrified too.

But mothers learn how to lie with steady voices.

“We’re okay.”

Marcus opened a reinforced door.

“Inside.”

I stepped forward.

Then one of the guards behind us raised his weapon.

Marcus turned too late.

The man struck him across the head.

Marcus collapsed.

I screamed.

The second guard reached for his gun.

A shot exploded.

He fell.

Mia screamed.

The traitor pointed the weapon at me.

“Quiet.”

I recognized him.

Daniel.

One of Adrian’s longtime security men.

“You work for Bell.”

“Tonight I do.”

“Why?”

“Money.”

The answer was so ordinary it was almost worse.

He grabbed my arm.

“Mia stays with me.”

“No.”

He pressed the weapon against my side.

“Don’t make this difficult.”

I looked at Marcus.

Blood ran from his temple.

He was breathing.

Good.

Daniel forced us back upstairs.

The mansion sounded like chaos.

Men shouting.

Doors slamming.

Mia sobbing.

I whispered, “Look at Mommy.”

She did.

“When I say run, you run.”

Daniel shoved me.

“I heard that.”

He pulled us toward the west corridor.

Then Adrian appeared.

Alone.

His shirt was torn at one shoulder.

Blood marked his cheek.

But he was standing.

Daniel aimed at him.

“Stop.”

Adrian stopped.

His eyes found Mia.

Then me.

He understood everything.

“Let them go.”

Daniel laughed nervously.

“Bell wants the woman.”

“Then take me instead.”

My heart stopped.

Daniel blinked.

Adrian continued.

“You know what I’m worth.”

“You think Bell wants ransom?”

“I think Bell wants leverage.”

Daniel’s grip tightened.

“You’re bluffing.”

Adrian slowly removed his weapon and placed it on the floor.

“Am I?”

“Adrian, no.”

His eyes met mine.

Trust me.

He didn’t say it.

He didn’t need to.

Daniel pointed toward the far wall.

“Move.”

Adrian stepped closer.

“Let Mia go first.”

“No.”

“She’s six.”

“I know.”

“Then act like you have a soul.”

Daniel’s expression flickered.

That hesitation was enough.

I stomped on his foot and shoved Mia sideways.

“Run!”

Mia ran.

Daniel swung the gun toward her.

Adrian lunged.

The weapon fired into the ceiling.

They crashed against the wall.

I pulled Mia behind a heavy table.

Marcus appeared at the stairwell entrance, staggering but conscious.

He raised his weapon.

“Drop it!”

Daniel froze.

Adrian twisted the gun from his hand.

Within seconds, it was over.

Mia ran toward Adrian.

I grabbed her.

“Wait.”

Adrian stood.

Blood ran from his hand.

“Are you hurt?”

“Not badly.”

I touched his face without thinking.

His eyes closed for half a second beneath my fingertips.

Then Marcus approached.

“We cleared the east wing.”

“Bell?”

“Gone.”

“Vincent?”

“Gone.”

Adrian looked toward Daniel.

“Take him downstairs.”

The guards dragged him away.

Mia stepped forward.

“Adrian?”

He crouched.

“Yes?”

“You’re bleeding.”

“A little.”

She looked serious.

“You need a Band-Aid.”

“I’ve been told.”

“I have princess ones.”

Adrian glanced at me.

“Apparently my medical options are improving.”

Despite the night, I laughed.

By sunrise, the attack was over.

Three of Bell’s men had been arrested after neighbors reported gunfire.

Several others escaped.

Nobody in Adrian’s household had died.

It felt miraculous.

But something had changed.

Adrian stood alone in the damaged study watching sunlight creep over Manhattan.

I entered quietly.

“You saved us.”

He didn’t turn.

“I brought danger here.”

“No. Bell did.”

“I knew this life could reach anyone around me.”

“So you think we should leave.”

He finally looked at me.

“Yes.”

The word hurt more than it should have.

“When?”

“Today.”

I swallowed.

“Where?”

“I arranged a house in Connecticut.”

“And you?”

“I stay here.”

“Why?”

“To finish this.”

I understood.

He was pushing us away because he cared.

It still hurt.

“Mia won’t understand.”

“She’ll be safer.”

“And what about me?”

He went still.

“What about you?”

“You don’t get to make this decision alone.”

“This isn’t about pride.”

“No. It’s about you deciding you’re dangerous and therefore nobody gets to choose you.”

His expression changed.

“You don’t know what you’re saying.”

“I know exactly what I’m saying.”

I stepped closer.

“You told me men like Vincent control people.”

“Yes.”

“Then don’t become one by deciding what’s best for me without asking.”

Silence.

Adrian looked down.

I had never seen him uncertain.

“What do you want?”

“I want Mia safe.”

“Yes.”

“I want Bell stopped.”

“Yes.”

“And I want you alive.”

His eyes lifted.

There.

I had said it.

Neither of us moved.

Then Adrian whispered, “Sarah.”

I shook my head.

“Don’t make me regret saying it.”

“I wasn’t going to.”

“What were you going to say?”

“That I want the same things.”

“Including you alive?”

A faint smile.

“Especially that one.”

I laughed.

Then something inside me gave way.

I stepped into him.

His hands caught my arms gently.

He waited.

Always waiting.

Always giving me the choice.

So I made it.

I kissed him.

It was brief.

Soft.

Nothing like the dramatic moment I would have imagined.

But when I pulled back, Adrian looked more shaken than he had during the attack.

“That,” he said quietly, “was reckless.”

“Probably.”

“Do it again.”

I smiled.

Then Mia’s voice came from the doorway.

“I knew it!”

We jumped apart.

She stood in pajamas holding her elephant.

“Mia!”

She grinned.

“Does this mean he’s my daddy now?”

Adrian covered his face.

I started laughing.

For the first time in years, laughter didn’t feel borrowed.

Then Marcus entered carrying a phone.

His expression ruined the moment.

“Sir.”

Adrian took it.

He listened.

Then looked at me.

“What?”

“The federal prosecutor is ready.”

“For the evidence?”

“Yes.”

“And Bell?”

“They’re preparing warrants.”

Relief hit me.

Until Marcus added, “Vincent disappeared.”

My smile vanished.

“What does that mean?”

Adrian’s gaze hardened.

“It means a man who has lost everything is now more dangerous than he was before.”

I pulled Mia closer.

Outside, New York was waking.

And somewhere in that city, Vincent Moretti was planning one last way to make me pay for leaving him.
