The Secret Hope Carried Home · Chapter 3 of 6

Chapter 3

By My Life Story Editorial · Published · Updated

By noon, Luca trusted no one.

Not Teddy.

Not Dominic.

Not the guards who had worked his gates for years.

Not the accountant who knew where every legitimate dollar moved.

Not even the people who had attended Elias’s funeral.

Hope trusted even fewer.

Detective Ortiz returned to the estate carrying photographs from the dead attacker.

“The symbol belongs to a private security network called Black Harbor,” she explained. “Officially dissolved two years ago.”

“Unofficially?” Hope asked.

Ortiz looked at Luca.

“Organizations like that rarely disappear. They change names.”

Luca studied the photographs.

One face was familiar.

A former dock supervisor.

A man Dominic had hired.

Luca’s gaze moved toward the older man.

Dominic remained calm.

“You hired him.”

“Eleven years ago.”

“You knew Black Harbor?”

“No.”

Hope watched both men.

“Someone wants us suspicious of each other.”

Ortiz nodded.

“Finally, someone in this house says something sensible.”

Luca ignored the insult.

“What did the dead man actually say?”

Ortiz opened her notebook.

“Four words. ‘Elias knew about Baron.’”

Everyone looked at Dominic.

The older man’s expression did not change.

Luca slowly stood.

“Dominic.”

“Yes?”

“Explain.”

“I cannot.”

Luca crossed the room.

“You have five seconds.”

“I cannot explain something I don’t understand.”

Hope stepped between them.

“Stop.”

Luca stared at her.

“You’re defending him?”

“I’m defending the possibility that someone is manipulating you.”

Dominic looked at Hope with something close to gratitude.

That was when she saw it.

A ring on his hand.

Silver.

Worn smooth with age.

Engraved with a tiny compass.

Hope froze.

“Where did you get that?”

Dominic instinctively covered it.

Luca noticed.

“Answer her.”

Dominic removed the ring.

“It belonged to my son.”

Hope went pale.

“What was his name?”

Dominic hesitated.

“Andrew.”

Hope sat down.

She knew Andrew Baron.

He had been in the same convoy.

He had been the young soldier Elias kept talking to while Hope dragged him from the wreckage.

“He survived,” Hope whispered.

Dominic stared.

“You knew him?”

“I treated him.”

The older man’s composure finally broke.

“My son died six months later.”

“I know.”

Dominic looked away.

“He never spoke about the convoy.”

“He was traumatized.”

“He barely spoke at all.”

Hope swallowed.

“Elias saved him.”

Dominic closed his eyes.

For three years, he had believed Luca’s brother had merely been another casualty.

Now he learned Elias had given his son a chance to come home.

Luca watched the two of them.

Something about the story still did not fit.

“Why would Elias investigate you?”

Dominic opened his eyes.

“He wasn’t investigating me.”

“Then what does ‘Elias knew about Baron’ mean?”

Dominic looked toward the windows.

“Perhaps it wasn’t me.”

Hope understood first.

“Andrew.”

Dominic nodded.

“My son knew something.”

---

They found Andrew Baron’s storage unit that evening.

Dominic had continued paying for it because he could never bring himself to empty the last place containing his son’s belongings.

Hope carried Elias’s key.

Unit 317 contained ordinary remnants of a young life.

Hockey equipment.

College textbooks.

Old uniforms.

A cracked guitar.

Photographs.

Luca searched in silence.

Hope noticed a metal medical chest beneath a blanket.

The brass key fit.

Inside were documents.

Shipping manifests.

Photographs.

Bank records.

And a small voice recorder.

Luca pressed play.

Static.

Then Elias’s voice filled the room.

“If you’re hearing this, something went wrong.”

Luca stopped breathing.

Dominic sat down.

Hope closed her eyes.

Elias continued.

“Someone has been using Ferretti shipping routes to move stolen weapons under humanitarian manifests. I thought Luca knew.”

Luca’s jaw tightened.

“I was wrong.”

Hope looked at him.

The recording continued.

“My brother has done things I hate. Things I’ve told him I hate. But this isn’t his operation.”

Luca almost smiled through the pain.

Even dead, Elias had found time to insult him.

Then came the name.

“The person coordinating the shipments is Vincent Ferretti.”

Luca’s uncle.

The man who had helped raise both brothers after their father died.

The man who had stood beside Luca at Elias’s funeral.

Dominic whispered, “Dear God.”

The recording continued.

“Andrew Baron found the manifests. He came to me because he recognized the Ferretti name. If Vincent realizes Andrew knows, he’ll kill him.”

Dominic’s face collapsed.

Hope reached for his hand.

Elias’s voice became quieter.

“I’m going overseas to retrieve the original ledger. If I don’t come back, Luca needs to know.”

Static crackled.

Then the final sentence.

“And tell my brother I was wrong about him.”

The recording ended.

Nobody spoke.

Luca stood motionless.

Then Hope saw tears on his face.

He did not wipe them away.

For three years, Luca had believed his brother died distrusting him.

Now the dead had reached across time and corrected the lie.

But before anyone could speak, the lights went out.

Hope moved first.

“Down!”

Glass shattered.

A suppressed shot struck the wall.

Luca pulled Dominic behind the metal shelving.

Hope heard footsteps.

Two.

Maybe three.

She grabbed Luca’s wrist.

“Back exit?”

“Twenty feet.”

“Move.”

They reached the emergency door as another shot struck the shelves.

Dominic stumbled.

Hope caught him.

Outside, Teddy’s SUV roared toward them.

“Get in!”

They piled inside.

Teddy accelerated.

A second vehicle followed.

Luca looked at Hope.

“The ledger.”

She held up the medical chest.

“Still have it.”

For the first time, Luca grinned.

“You are becoming extremely inconvenient to kill.”

Hope stared at him.

“That may be the nicest thing you’ve said to me.”

Then Teddy shouted.

“Hold on!”

The pursuing SUV slammed into them.

Metal screamed.

The vehicle spun.

And as Hope reached instinctively for Luca, she realized someone had known exactly where they were going.

Someone who had access to Luca’s security plans.

Vincent was not working alone.
