Chapter 6

By My Life Story Editorial · Published · Updated

Mara stopped breathing.

Luca stared from the photograph with blood at the corner of his mouth.

Nicholas took the phone.

His expression changed from shock to fury.

"He's at the rehabilitation center?"

Mara called immediately.

No answer.

Then security responded.

Two guards had been found unconscious.

Luca was gone.

Mara grabbed the metal case.

"I'm going."

Nicholas blocked her.

"No."

"Move."

"Absolutely not."

"He has my brother."

"And he'll kill you the second you arrive."

"Then give me another option."

Nicholas stared at her.

Mara's voice broke.

"Give me one."

He couldn't.

Police wanted time.

Mara had none.

Adrian demanded Pier Seventeen at midnight.

No police.

No Nicholas.

No trackers.

The evidence for Luca.

At eleven thirty, Mara got into a car alone.

At least Adrian believed she was alone.

A tiny transmitter had been sewn into the lining of her coat.

Police waited miles away.

Nicholas had been ordered to remain behind.

Mara knew he wouldn't.

Pier Seventeen belonged to an abandoned section of industrial waterfront.

Warehouses.

Rusting cranes.

Black water.

Mara entered warehouse seventeen carrying the metal case.

Luca sat tied to a chair beneath a hanging light.

"Mara!"

She ran toward him.

Adrian stepped from the shadows.

Gun raised.

"Stop."

Mara froze.

Her brother looked exhausted but alive.

"Let him go."

"The case."

"First Luca."

Adrian smiled.

"You inherited your father's confidence."

"You murdered my father."

"He made a choice."

"He tried to stop you."

"He betrayed men more powerful than him."

"No."

Mara tightened her grip on the case.

"He underestimated how weak you were."

Adrian's smile vanished.

"You think I'm weak?"

"You kill people who discover what you are."

"And what am I?"

"A coward."

Luca whispered, "Mara, maybe stop insulting the man with the gun."

Despite everything, she almost laughed.

Adrian stepped closer.

"The case."

Mara placed it down.

"Kick it over."

She did.

Adrian opened it.

Documents.

Photographs.

The ledger.

He smiled.

"Your father hid this for eight years."

"You'll never destroy every copy."

His eyes lifted.

"What copies?"

Mara lied.

"Police have them."

Adrian studied her.

"You wouldn't risk Luca."

"Maybe I learned from Nicholas."

At the name, Adrian's face twisted.

"My nephew ruined everything."

"You ruined yourself."

"He inherited what should have been mine."

"There it is."

Adrian pointed the gun at her.

"You think Nicholas cares about you?"

Mara said nothing.

"Men like him don't love women like you."

"Women like me?"

"Employees. Distractions."

Mara looked him directly in the eye.

"You don't know Nicholas at all."

A voice came from the darkness.

"No. He never did."

Nicholas.

Mara's heart stopped.

Adrian spun.

Nicholas stepped into the light.

No cane.

No visible weapon.

"You were told not to come," Adrian said.

"I've spent half my life ignoring you."

Adrian aimed at him.

Nicholas kept walking.

"Release them."

"You always thought you were better than me."

"No."

Nicholas stopped.

"I simply never needed to prove I was."

Adrian fired.

Nicholas dropped.

Mara screamed.

But the shot had hit a steel beam.

Nicholas rolled behind machinery.

Police lights suddenly exploded outside.

Adrian grabbed Luca.

Gun against his head.

"Back!"

Mara moved toward them.

Adrian shouted, "Stay!"

Nicholas appeared behind another crate.

"Adrian."

"Don't."

"You don't want Luca."

"I want out."

"You won't get out."

"Then he dies."

Mara began humming.

Adrian stared.

"What are you doing?"

Four notes.

Pause.

Four notes.

Nicholas understood.

The lullaby.

The same rhythm she used during his pain attacks.

But now she changed it.

Tap.

Pause.

Tap-tap.

A signal.

During the past weeks Nicholas had learned every variation.

Fast meant danger.

Slow meant breathe.

Two taps meant right.

Three meant left.

Mara looked at him.

Then tapped twice against the metal case.

Right.

Nicholas's gaze shifted.

A suspended chain hung beside Adrian.

Mara kicked the case.

Adrian looked down.

Nicholas lunged.

Mara grabbed Luca's chair and pulled backward.

A gun fired.

Then another.

Adrian fell.

Nicholas stood over him.

Blood ran from Adrian's arm.

Police rushed inside.

Adrian laughed from the floor.

"This family will destroy you, Nicholas."

Nicholas looked at Mara.

"No."

Then at Luca.

"No more."

Police handcuffed Adrian.

Mara collapsed beside her brother and untied him.

Luca hugged her.

"I knew you'd come."

"Of course I came."

Nicholas approached slowly.

Luca looked at his prosthetic leg.

Then at his face.

"So you're Nicholas."

Nicholas nodded.

"Unfortunately."

Luca smiled.

"My sister talks about you."

Mara stared.

"I absolutely do not."

Luca ignored her.

"Constantly."

Nicholas smiled.

"Interesting."

"Luca."

"What? I was kidnapped. I get one free betrayal."

Mara hugged him harder.

Outside, Adrian was placed into a police vehicle.

His empire was finished.

The evidence revealed everything.

Carlo Bellini's murder.

Antonio Valenti's poisoning.

The bombing.

Illegal weapons shipments.

Bribery.

Fraud.

Thomas's betrayal.

Dozens of crimes.

Nicholas cooperated with prosecutors.

He also made another decision.

He began dismantling every illegal part of the Valenti organization.

Some men objected.

Nicholas gave them two choices.

Legitimate business.

Or leave.

Most left.

Months passed.

The mansion was rebuilt.

Luca continued rehabilitation.

Mara returned to work.

But not as Nicholas's housekeeper.

She resigned.

Nicholas accepted her resignation with suspicious calm.

"That's it?" she asked.

"That's it."

She narrowed her eyes.

"I expected an argument."

"I've learned arguing with you is ineffective."

"Good."

"However, I have another job available."

Mara groaned.

"No."

"You haven't heard it."

"No."

"Director of the Bellini Foundation."

She stopped.

"The what?"

Nicholas handed her a folder.

A nonprofit organization.

Funding rehabilitation for accident survivors and families unable to afford long-term physical therapy.

Named after Carlo Bellini.

Mara stared at him.

"You did this?"

"We did."

"We?"

"Luca helped."

"Traitor."

Nicholas smiled.

Mara looked at the proposal again.

Then at him.

"Why?"

"Because your father spent his life trying to protect people."

Nicholas's voice softened.

"I thought his name should keep doing that."

Mara's eyes filled.

She hugged him.

Nicholas held her.

Then Mara pulled back.

"There's one problem."

"What?"

"I still don't know what we are."

Nicholas became serious.

"I do."

He touched her cheek.

"What?"

"The only thing in my life I'm no longer afraid to lose."

Mara stared at him.

"That's incredibly romantic for someone who once threw a glass at my head."

"I missed."

"You said you weren't trying."

"I lied."

She laughed.

Then Nicholas kissed her.

For once there was no pain.

No screaming.

No danger.

Only the beginning of something neither of them had expected.

But their story was not finished.

Because healing, Mara would learn, required something harder than surviving danger.

It required believing happiness could last.
