Warehouse seventeen stood beside the frozen river like a forgotten monument.
Sheree could hear the wind pushing against the metal walls.
Luca had argued with her for almost an hour.
Sheree had won only because Dominic agreed with her plan.
That betrayal nearly got Dominic fired.
The plan was simple.
Which meant Sheree hated it immediately.
Adrian believed Luca would come alone.
He wouldn’t.
Dominic’s team would approach through an adjacent warehouse connected by an old service corridor.
Rachel had already delivered copies of the financial records to federal investigators.
If Adrian destroyed what Luca brought, it would accomplish nothing.
Most importantly, Sheree wore a small recording device beneath her sweater.
“If anything feels wrong, you leave,” Luca said for approximately the twentieth time.
“We are entering a warehouse where a criminal surgeon is holding your cousin hostage.”
“Yes.”
“Everything feels wrong.”
Luca did not appreciate the observation.
They entered at 11:58.
Adrian waited beneath hanging industrial lights.
Matteo sat twenty feet away.
Alive.
Bruised, but conscious.
“Cousin,” he called.
Luca glanced at him.
“You look terrible.”
Matteo laughed weakly.
“You look worse.”
“Family reunions are touching,” Adrian said.
Sheree looked at the surgeon she had worked beside for four years.
The transformation was astonishing.
He still looked exactly the same.
Same neatly combed hair.
Same confident posture.
Same calm smile he used before operations.
That frightened her more than a monster would have.
“Why?” she asked.
Adrian looked at her.
“Money.”
“That’s it?”
“What answer would satisfy you?”
“You already make more in a year than most people earn in ten.”
“And men like Luca make more in an afternoon than I make in a year.”
Luca said nothing.
Adrian continued.
“I saw an opportunity.”
“By stealing medical equipment?”
“Diverting it.”
“To underground buyers.”
“Markets reward efficiency.”
Sheree stared.
“You framed me.”
“You were unfortunate.”
“I saved his life.”
“Yes.”
Adrian’s smile faded.
“That was extremely inconvenient.”
Luca moved slightly forward.
One of Adrian's men raised a weapon.
Luca stopped.
“Where is the person inside my organization helping you?”
Adrian smiled.
“Still asking the important question.”
A door opened behind them.
Dominic entered.
Alone.
Sheree turned.
Something was wrong.
Luca’s face changed.
“Dominic?”
Dominic held something in his hand.
A weapon.
Pointed at Luca.
Sheree felt the world tilt.
Adrian laughed.
“There.”
Luca looked at the man who had guarded him for fourteen years.
“Why?”
Dominic’s face revealed nothing.
“You know why.”
“No.”
“You trusted Matteo with the future.”
Matteo stared.
“What?”
Dominic’s jaw tightened.
“Everything I built, everything I protected, and eventually it goes to him.”
Luca’s voice remained calm.
“So this was ambition.”
“This was survival.”
Sheree looked from one man to the other.
Something bothered her.
Dominic was standing strangely.
His weapon aimed at Luca.
But his eyes kept moving toward a steel doorway.
Three seconds later, Sheree understood.
A tiny red light blinked near the ceiling.
Security camera.
Dominic looked at her.
Once.
Then at the floor.
Sheree remembered something he had told her days earlier.
Sometimes people need to believe the lie long enough for it to matter.
Adrian stepped toward Luca.
“Give me the drive.”
Luca removed a small flash drive.
“You know copies exist.”
“I know you wouldn't trust police with everything.”
“You're right.”
Adrian smiled.
“Then perhaps we negotiate.”
“No.”
Luca threw the drive.
It landed near Adrian’s feet.
Adrian looked down.
That was the distraction.
Dominic turned.
Everything happened quickly.
A steel door slammed open.
Men rushed inside.
Adrian shouted.
Matteo kicked backward, knocking his chair into one of the guards.
Luca pulled Sheree behind a concrete support.
There was chaos.
Shouting.
Metal crashing.
Sheree covered her head.
Luca stayed over her, shielding her with his body.
“Stay down.”
“Matteo!”
“Dominic has him.”
Then Adrian appeared behind them.
He grabbed Sheree.
A cold object pressed against her side.
Luca froze.
Adrian pulled her backward.
“Everyone stop!”
The warehouse went silent.
Sheree’s heart hammered.
Adrian held her in front of him.
Luca’s face changed into something she had never seen.
Pure terror.
Not for himself.
For her.
“Let her go,” he said.
Adrian laughed.
“Now we finally understand the situation.”
“Take me.”
“Luca—” Sheree began.
“Quiet.”
Adrian smiled.
“She really did become your weakness.”
Luca's eyes never left Sheree.
“No.”
“No?”
“She became the reason I don't want to be the man you think I am.”
Sheree’s throat tightened.
Adrian shifted.
That was his mistake.
Sheree had worked emergency medicine for twelve years.
She knew panic.
She knew bodies.
And she knew people underestimated nurses constantly.
She dropped her weight.
Hard.
Adrian lost balance.
Sheree drove her elbow backward and twisted away.
Luca moved immediately.
Dominic reached Adrian first.
Within seconds, Adrian was on the ground.
Alive.
Restrained.
Furious.
Sheree backed into Luca.
His arms closed around her.
“You're hurt?”
“No.”
“Are you sure?”
“Yes.”
He checked anyway.
Hands trembling.
Sheree realized she had never seen Luca’s hands tremble.
“I’m okay.”
He pulled her against his chest.
For several seconds, the warehouse disappeared.
Then police sirens approached.
Adrian's eyes widened.
“You called police?”
Sheree looked at him.
“No.”
Rachel had.
The attorney had provided investigators with everything.
Financial records.
Hospital records.
Warehouse documents.
And now Sheree’s recording.
Adrian stared at her.
“You recorded me.”
“Yes.”
“You stupid—”
Luca stepped forward.
Sheree caught his arm.
“No.”
He looked at her.
“Legally,” she reminded him.
For a moment, she thought he would ignore her.
Then he stepped back.
Police entered.
Adrian Cole was arrested.
Several of his associates surrendered.
Dominic personally untied Matteo.
Matteo immediately punched him in the shoulder.
“You could have warned me about the fake betrayal.”
“You're terrible at pretending.”
“I thought you betrayed us!”
“That made it convincing.”
Matteo looked at Luca.
“Can I fire him?”
“No.”
“Worth asking.”
Sheree laughed.
The sound surprised everyone.
Outside, snow had stopped falling.
Luca stood beside her while blue lights reflected across the frozen river.
“This isn't over,” he said.
“What isn't?”
“The person who originally supplied Adrian information about my dock route.”
“Dominic wasn't the real traitor?”
“No.”
“He was pretending?”
“Yes.”
Sheree frowned.
“Then who was it?”
Luca looked toward the police vehicles.
“I don't know.”
A black sedan started moving at the far end of the street.
Dominic noticed.
“So does Luca.”
The sedan disappeared.
Inside it, an older man made a phone call.
“The doctor failed.”
A voice answered.
“And Santoro?”
“Alive.”
“What about the woman?”
The man looked back toward Sheree.
“Still beside him.”
There was a pause.
Then the voice said, “Then next time, take away the thing he values most.”
