The Ballroom That Finally Fell Silent · Chapter 4 of 6

Chapter 4

By My Life Story Editorial · Published · Updated

Maria Moretti was seventy-two years old and absolutely furious about being kidnapped.

Gabriel made the mistake of allowing her one phone call.

She spent twenty seconds insulting him before telling Luca exactly where she thought they were.

“I hear trains.”

“Mom.”

“And water.”

“Mom.”

“And if that skinny traitor touches me again, I’ll break his—”

The call disconnected.

Hannah stared.

“That’s your mother?”

Luca rubbed his forehead.

“Yes.”

“I like her.”

Under other circumstances he would have laughed.

Instead, every available Moretti operative searched freight yards near the river.

Federal agents were notified too.

That was new.

In the old days Luca would never have involved authorities.

Now he did.

Not because he trusted the system completely.

Because he finally understood what happened when one man decided he alone should be the system.

At eleven that night, Gabriel called again.

“Ashwood. Midnight.”

“You said my mother was there.”

“She will be.”

“And Noah?”

“Also.”

Hannah whispered, “I’m coming.”

Luca covered the phone.

“No.”

She glared.

“My brother.”

“I know.”

“You don’t get to decide.”

Gabriel heard enough to laugh.

“Bring Hannah too.”

Luca’s jaw tightened.

Gabriel added, “Actually, I insist.”

The old bridge had never been rebuilt.

A temporary span carried traffic two hundred yards upstream now.

The ruins of Ashwood remained along the river like broken teeth.

Snow had begun falling when Luca arrived.

Hannah sat beside him.

Vincent followed in another vehicle despite Gabriel’s demand.

Federal tactical teams remained out of sight.

Luca carried a duplicate memory card.

The real evidence was already in federal custody.

He and Hannah walked toward the ruined bridge.

Gabriel stood beneath a floodlight.

Maria was tied to a chair.

Noah sat beside her.

Alive.

Bruised.

Angry.

“Hannah!”

She nearly ran toward him.

Luca caught her arm.

Gabriel held a gun.

“Easy.”

Hannah stopped.

Gabriel smiled.

“Three years. You really made me work.”

She stared at him.

“You killed Elena.”

“I corrected a problem.”

Luca’s face changed.

Gabriel looked almost amused.

“You still don’t understand.”

“Then explain.”

“Elena was destroying you.”

“No.”

“She was turning you legitimate.”

“That was my decision.”

“You were becoming weak.”

Luca almost smiled.

“You murdered my wife because I wanted legal businesses?”

“I saved the empire.”

“You saved yourself.”

That landed.

Gabriel’s smile vanished.

Luca continued.

“Elena found your theft.”

“She found my insurance.”

“She found proof you were stealing.”

“From criminals.”

“You were stealing from me.”

Gabriel laughed bitterly.

“There he is.”

Hannah looked between them.

Gabriel raised the weapon slightly.

“The great Luca Moretti. He can forgive murder, maybe. But theft? Never.”

Luca did something Gabriel did not expect.

He dropped the memory card into the snow.

“I don’t care about the money.”

Gabriel stared.

“I care about them.”

He pointed to Maria.

Noah.

Hannah.

Then back toward the distant estate where Sophia waited with doctors and guards.

“My daughter.”

Gabriel shook his head.

“You’re lying.”

“No.”

“You built everything around power.”

“I did.”

“And now?”

“Now I know what it cost.”

Gabriel stepped closer.

“You don’t get to become a good man because your daughter walked.”

“No.”

Luca’s voice remained steady.

“I get to decide what man I am tomorrow.”

For the first time, Gabriel looked uncertain.

Hannah moved slightly toward Noah.

Gabriel snapped the gun toward her.

“Stay.”

Maria rolled her eyes.

“You were always dramatic.”

“Quiet.”

She smiled.

“You used to shake when Luca’s father raised his voice.”

Gabriel turned.

That distraction lasted one second.

Noah kicked the chair leg.

Hannah lunged.

Luca moved.

The gun fired.

Everyone hit the ground.

Federal agents surged from the darkness.

Gabriel ran toward the bridge ruins.

Luca chased him.

Snow whipped across broken concrete.

Gabriel reached the collapsed railing.

Below them, black river water moved beneath sheets of ice.

The exact place Elena’s car had gone through.

Gabriel turned with the gun.

“It should’ve been you.”

Luca stopped.

“What?”

“Elena was never supposed to be driving that night.”

Everything inside Luca went cold.

Gabriel smiled.

“The car was yours.”

Luca understood.

The bridge sabotage had been designed for him.

Elena had taken his car because hers wouldn’t start.

Gabriel intended to kill Luca.

Elena died instead.

“You wanted my empire.”

“I built half of it.”

“You wanted my name.”

“I wanted what you wasted.”

Gabriel lifted the gun.

Luca did not move.

Sirens approached.

“You won’t shoot me,” Luca said.

“Why?”

“Because you need me dead to prove you mattered.”

Gabriel’s face twisted.

“And you know if you kill me here, everyone remembers you as the man who spent twelve years standing behind Luca Moretti.”

The gun trembled.

Luca stepped closer.

“You were never my equal, Gabriel.”

Gabriel fired.

Luca moved.

The bullet struck concrete.

They collided.

The gun skidded toward the edge.

Gabriel punched him.

Luca hit back.

Years of rage exploded.

For one dangerous moment Luca wanted nothing except to throw him into the river.

Gabriel ended up hanging over the broken edge, one hand gripping Luca’s wrist.

Below them, black water moved.

Gabriel looked up.

“Do it.”

Luca saw Elena.

He saw the hospital room.

Sophia’s wheelchair.

Three years of grief.

Do it.

One movement.

That was all.

Then he heard Sophia in his head.

Scared doesn’t mean stop.

Luca pulled Gabriel upward.

Agents grabbed him.

Gabriel stared in disbelief.

“Why?”

Luca stood over him, breathing hard.

“Because my daughter deserves a father who comes home.”

Gabriel was arrested.

Alive.

That decision would later matter more than Luca knew.

His testimony exposed judges, police officers, contractors, and business executives who had helped build Gabriel’s hidden network.

The empire began collapsing.

But not Luca’s family.

Not anymore.
