Chapter 5

The newspapers called it the Moretti Reckoning.

Television crews surrounded courthouses.

Former associates disappeared.

Companies were investigated.

Luca testified for eleven hours across three days.

He admitted things that could cost him money.

Reputation.

Freedom.

Some crimes had been his.

He did not hide from them.

Hannah watched the first hearing from home with Sophia.

When Luca returned that evening, Sophia met him at the door.

Standing.

No wheelchair.

She still used braces.

Still tired easily.

But she stood.

“How bad?” Hannah asked.

Luca removed his coat.

“Bad.”

“Prison?”

“Possibly.”

Sophia heard.

Her face changed.

Luca crouched.

“Hey.”

“You’re leaving?”

“I don’t know.”

Her eyes filled.

He pulled her close.

“I made mistakes before you were old enough to understand them.”

“Bad mistakes?”

“Yes.”

“Are you bad?”

The question broke something in the room.

Luca took time before answering.

“I’ve done bad things.”

“That’s not what I asked.”

Hannah looked away.

Luca swallowed.

“I’m trying not to be.”

Sophia hugged him.

“Okay.”

Children sometimes offered mercy adults spent lifetimes refusing each other.

Gabriel’s trial began six months later.

Hannah testified.

She described Ashwood.

Elena’s dying words.

The threats.

The envelopes.

Peter Ellison’s death.

Caleb confirmed the sabotage.

Digital records confirmed the money trail.

Gabriel was convicted.

Conspiracy.

Murder.

Kidnapping.

Obstruction.

Extortion.

A list long enough that the courtroom clerk seemed to run out of breath.

Luca received a reduced sentence arrangement because of cooperation.

No prison.

Three years supervised release.

Massive financial penalties.

Several businesses forfeited.

His illegal operations were dismantled permanently.

When his attorney delivered the final deal, Vincent raised a glass.

“To surviving.”

Luca shook his head.

“No.”

He looked toward Sophia playing in the garden.

“To starting over.”

Hannah had intended to leave after the trial.

Luca learned that when he found boxes in the guest suite.

“What are those?”

“My belongings.”

“I can see that.”

“I’m moving.”

“Why?”

She stared.

“Because I live here now.”

“You do.”

“That’s the problem.”

Luca leaned against the doorway.

“For Sophia?”

“Partly.”

“And the other part?”

Hannah did not answer.

He knew.

Their friendship had become something else slowly.

Coffee after Sophia slept.

Arguments in the kitchen.

Long conversations about guilt and fear.

Hannah refused his money.

Refused his cars.

Refused every attempt Luca made to solve practical problems with wealth.

When her old apartment flooded, he offered her a luxury condo.

She rented another apartment herself.

When he gave Noah a job, Hannah made Luca prove Noah was qualified.

When Luca tried to tip the movers five hundred dollars, she took the money out of their hands and returned it.

“You’re impossible,” he told her.

“You’re ridiculous.”

Sophia loved watching them argue.

One evening she asked, “Are you two married?”

Hannah nearly dropped a plate.

Luca answered, “No.”

“Why?”

Hannah turned red.

“Eat your peas.”

Now, standing beside her packed boxes, Luca finally asked the question he had avoided.

“Are you leaving because of me?”

“Yes.”

He looked down.

“That bad?”

“That complicated.”

He stepped inside.

“Hannah.”

She shook her head.

“You were married to Elena.”

“I know.”

“I saved your daughter the night your wife died.”

“I know.”

“Your entire life began falling apart the second I walked back into it.”

“That part was already happening.”

She almost smiled.

Then her eyes filled.

“I don’t know how to be in this family without feeling like I’m standing in a dead woman’s place.”

Luca’s face softened.

“You’re not.”

“I see her everywhere.”

“So do I.”

That surprised her.

He sat on the edge of the bed.

“Elena is not a room someone can occupy.”

Hannah slowly sat across from him.

“I loved her.”

“I know.”

“I still love her.”

Hannah nodded.

“And I love you.”

She stopped breathing.

Luca continued before courage disappeared.

“Not instead of her.”

His voice softened.

“After her.”

Hannah looked down.

“I’m scared.”

“So am I.”

“You?”

“Yes.”

“That’s new.”

He smiled.

“Very.”

Sophia appeared in the doorway wearing pajamas.

“Are you leaving?”

Hannah wiped her face.

“I was thinking about it.”

Sophia walked over.

Her balance was stronger now.

She sat between them.

“Don’t.”

Hannah pulled her close.

“You’re not allowed to use sad eyes.”

Sophia immediately made them sadder.

Luca laughed.

Hannah laughed too.

And somehow the boxes stayed.
