The estate locked down quietly.
Dominic did not want Lily frightened.
Employees were told a financial audit was underway.
Security doubled at exterior entrances.
Marco reviewed every access code used during the ninety minutes following Evelyn's suspension.
At first, nothing looked unusual.
Then they found it.
The east gate had been opened remotely at 10:43 a.m.
The authorization belonged to Dominic's personal assistant.
Michael Rourke.
Dominic stared at the name on Marco's tablet.
"No."
Marco's expression remained cautious.
"You trust him?"
"For twelve years."
Michael had traveled with him across the country.
Handled confidential schedules.
Sat beside hospital beds.
Once taken a broken bottle across his shoulder while pulling Dominic from a bar fight neither man should have been in.
He wasn't household staff.
He was practically family.
Which was exactly why betrayal hurt differently.
"Where is he?"
"Your Manhattan office."
"Don't call him."
Dominic stood.
"I'll go."
Marco shook his head.
"Bad idea."
Dominic raised an eyebrow.
Marco didn't back down.
"If he's involved, he knows you're auditing the house. You show up angry, he knows we're onto the gate access."
"I am onto the gate access."
"We need to know whether he's part of the theft or whether Evelyn manipulated him."
Dominic hated patience when betrayal was involved.
But Marco was right.
They pulled the gate logs.
Michael's authorization had been used from the estate network.
Not Manhattan.
Someone had accessed his credentials locally.
Dominic's suspicion shifted.
"Could Evelyn have his password?"
"Possibly."
"How?"
Marco brought up footage from the administrative hallway.
Two weeks earlier, Michael had visited the estate.
Evelyn entered Dominic's study carrying coffee.
Five minutes later Michael left.
Evelyn remained inside another three minutes.
"She had access to his tablet," Marco said.
Dominic leaned back.
"So Michael might be innocent."
"Might."
"Call him."
Michael answered on the second ring.
"Morning, boss."
"Where were you at 10:43?"
A pause.
"Today?"
"Yes."
"Midtown. Why?"
"Can you prove it?"
Another pause.
"What's happening?"
"Answer."
"I was in conference room B with Walker and two attorneys."
Dominic looked at Marco.
Marco nodded as messages came through.
Verified.
Michael was clean.
The gate authorization had been stolen.
Which meant Evelyn had planned an escape route before she ever entered Dominic's office.
"Change every administrative credential," Dominic said.
Marco nodded.
Then Anna appeared at the doorway.
"Lily is asking if she can see the new floor."
Dominic blinked.
"What?"
"The threshold."
For several seconds, money laundering, access logs, stolen passwords, and betrayal vanished beneath the absurd normality of a child's curiosity.
"Sure."
They walked to the kitchen.
Maintenance had removed the raised marble strip.
A temporary smooth transition panel covered the opening until permanent work could be completed.
Lily stood on one side.
Dominic on the other.
She looked down.
Then at him.
"I can go?"
"You can go."
She stepped forward.
No scrape.
No stumble.
One pink shoe crossed.
Then the braced leg.
Smoothly.
Lily stopped on the other side.
Her face lit up as though she had crossed a finish line.
"I did it!"
Anna covered her mouth.
Dominic smiled.
"Yeah, you did."
Lily turned around.
Crossed back.
Then forward again.
Three times.
Each successful crossing made her laugh louder.
Several kitchen employees watched.
Some smiled.
One chef discreetly wiped his eyes.
Dominic looked at them.
They quickly looked away.
"No."
They froze.
"If something makes you happy, you're allowed to smile in my kitchen."
The chef looked embarrassed.
Then laughed.
The tension broke.
For a moment, the mansion felt less like a fortress.
Then Marco's phone rang.
He stepped aside.
His expression changed.
Dominic noticed immediately.
"What?"
Marco lowered his voice.
"Evelyn's car was found."
"Where?"
"Train station."
"She board a train?"
"No."
"Camera?"
"She got into another vehicle."
"Plate?"
"Covered."
Dominic's smile disappeared.
Anna saw it.
"Lily," she said, "go show Norah how you cross."
The child happily moved toward the pantry.
Anna approached Dominic.
"Is she dangerous?"
Dominic considered lying.
He decided not to.
"I don't know."
"What happens if she comes back?"
"She won't get near you."
"You can't promise that."
Dominic looked at her.
"Yes, I can."
Anna shook her head.
"No."
The refusal surprised him.
"You can increase guards. Cameras. Locks."
Her voice trembled.
"But nobody can promise that another person won't do something desperate."
Dominic studied her.
She wasn't challenging his power.
She was challenging the illusion of it.
And she was right.
"I spent months believing Evelyn controlled everything," Anna continued. "I'm not replacing that with believing you control everything."
Dominic almost smiled.
"Fair."
Anna folded her arms.
"So what can you promise?"
He thought.
"That I won't lie to you."
She held his gaze.
"And?"
"That I won't make decisions about Lily's safety without telling you."
Anna nodded.
"Better."
Marco approached.
"We traced Daniel."
Dominic turned.
"Where?"
"Not with Evelyn."
"Then?"
"Hospital."
Dominic's eyebrows drew together.
"He was assaulted outside his apartment last night."
Anna went pale.
"By who?"
"Unknown."
Dominic's instincts sharpened.
The theft case had just changed.
If Daniel had been attacked before Evelyn was suspended, someone had already been cleaning up the scheme.
"Can he talk?"
"Yes."
"Then let's go."
At the hospital Daniel Crane looked less like a criminal mastermind and more like a frightened middle-aged man who had discovered too late that dishonesty could attract people worse than himself.
His left eye was swollen.
His lip was split.
Dominic stood at the foot of the bed.
"Who did this?"
Daniel stared.
"I want a lawyer."
"Good."
Dominic pulled a chair closer.
"You'll need one."
Daniel looked away.
Dominic placed photographs of the fake invoices on the tray table.
"One hundred eighty-seven thousand dollars."
Daniel's breathing changed.
"That wasn't all us."
Dominic leaned forward.
"Us."
Daniel cursed quietly.
"Tell me who else."
Daniel shook his head.
"I can't."
"Why?"
"Because Evelyn tried to get out."
Dominic felt cold.
"Out of what?"
Daniel laughed bitterly.
"You think my sister designed this?"
"Didn't she?"
"She started small."
Daniel looked toward the door.
"Vendor padding. Fifty bucks here. Two hundred there. Then somebody noticed."
"Who?"
Daniel swallowed.
"Victor Salerno."
Dominic's face hardened.
The name belonged to a businessman Dominic had cut ties with years earlier.
A man with enough legitimate holdings to appear respectable and enough old criminal connections to remain dangerous.
"What does Salerno have to do with my household accounts?"
"He had a company supplying specialty goods to one of your hotels."
"Not anymore."
"That's why."
Daniel's eyes flicked toward Dominic.
"After you canceled his contract, he wanted information."
"What information?"
"Schedules. Security staffing. Which properties you visited."
Dominic's entire body went still.
This was no longer theft.
It was surveillance.
Daniel continued.
"Evelyn refused at first."
"Then?"
"Salerno found out about the fake invoices."
Dominic understood.
Blackmail.
"He said he'd expose her unless she cooperated."
Daniel nodded.
"She gave him small things."
"Such as?"
"Travel dates. Staff rotations."
Anna.
Lily.
The photograph.
WATCH HER.
Dominic's voice dropped.
"Why was Anna being watched?"
Daniel hesitated.
"Because she heard us arguing."
"That's all?"
"Mostly."
Dominic stepped closer.
"Mostly?"
Daniel closed his eyes.
"Anna also cleans the upstairs library."
"So?"
"Salerno thought you kept sensitive documents there."
Dominic almost laughed.
"I don't."
Daniel looked relieved.
"But Evelyn didn't know that."
Dominic stared at him.
"Where is your sister?"
"I don't know."
"Try again."
"I swear."
Daniel's voice cracked.
"She called me last night. She was terrified."
"What did she say?"
"That Salerno knew Dominic was auditing the house."
Dominic corrected him softly.
"I'm Dominic."
Daniel's face paled further.
"She said Victor told her to disappear."
"And then somebody attacked you."
Daniel nodded.
Dominic stood.
Salerno was tying off loose ends.
Evelyn might be a thief.
A bully.
A manipulator.
But she might also be in danger.
Marco received a text.
He read it twice.
Then looked at Dominic.
"We found a traffic camera."
"Vehicle?"
"Black SUV."
"Registered?"
Marco nodded.
"To a Salerno holding company."
Dominic looked toward the window.
The city moved far below.
Ordinary people going to work.
Buying coffee.
Taking children to school.
Inside the hospital room, the shape of the problem had finally become visible.
It had started with eight thousand four hundred dollars.
Then a little girl's scratched brace.
Now it led directly to Victor Salerno.
Dominic turned toward Marco.
"Call the detective handling the fraud case."
Marco looked surprised.
"And tell him?"
"Everything."
Daniel stared.
"You'd involve police?"
Dominic looked at him.
"There's a four-year-old girl in my house."
His voice was quiet.
"This stopped being about pride yesterday."
Back at the estate that evening, Lily was asleep on the sofa beside Anna when Dominic returned.
Her stuffed rabbit rested beneath her chin.
Anna opened her eyes.
"Did you find Evelyn?"
"No."
"Are we safe?"
Dominic remembered her question.
What could he actually promise?
He sat in the chair across from her.
"We know who's behind it."
Anna straightened.
"And?"
"And we're not handling it alone."
Her expression softened.
Dominic looked at Lily.
"I spent most of my life believing asking for help was weakness."
Anna studied him.
"What changed?"
Dominic glanced toward the kitchen.
Toward the doorway that no longer had a raised step.
"A little girl scratched my floor."
Anna smiled faintly.
Then Marco appeared at the room entrance.
"Dominic."
One look at his face erased the moment.
"What happened?"
"We got a message."
"From who?"
Marco held up a phone.
"Evelyn."
Dominic stood.
The message contained only seven words.
He knows about Anna. Get them out.
Dominic looked at the sleeping child.
Then at Anna.
And somewhere beyond the walls of his estate, Victor Salerno had just made the biggest mistake of his life.
He had turned a financial crime into a threat against Dominic's family.
And Dominic had only just realized that was what Anna and Lily had become.
