Caroline Whitmore answered Raffaele's call on the third ring.
She did not say hello.
She said, "Evelyn is alive, isn't she?"
Raffaele's silence confirmed it.
Caroline started crying.
He stood inside his study overlooking the gardens.
"How did you know?"
"I saw the news."
The story had already begun leaking.
Police vehicles at the Castellano mansion attracted reporters.
An anonymous source disclosed that a missing bride had been recovered alive.
The name hadn't been officially announced, but people connected to the family could guess.
Raffaele's voice remained cold.
"Bianca says you knew Evelyn didn't run."
Caroline stopped crying.
"That's not true."
"Then why did she say it?"
"Because Bianca lies."
"Yes. She does."
He paused.
"But she's usually strategic about it."
Caroline said nothing.
"Tell me what happened."
"I already told investigators seven years ago."
"Tell me again."
"I left the room around noon. Evelyn seemed dizzy. Bianca said she needed rest. When I came back, Evelyn was gone."
"Why did you tell police she had doubts about the wedding?"
Caroline's breathing became audible.
"She did."
"About me?"
"About your family."
"That's not what the report says."
Another silence.
Raffaele closed his eyes.
"Caroline."
"She threatened me."
There it was.
"How?"
"Two days after Evelyn disappeared, Bianca came to my apartment."
Raffaele listened.
"She said Evelyn had discovered things about your family. She said powerful people would destroy anyone who repeated what Evelyn had said."
"What had Evelyn told you?"
"Nothing specific. Only that she'd found something strange and planned to tell you after the ceremony."
"Why didn't you tell the police?"
"I was scared."
"For seven years?"
Caroline began sobbing.
"My father was sick. Bianca knew where my sister went to school. She showed me photographs."
Raffaele thought of Luca's photograph.
Same method.
Different year.
"Did you know Evelyn was inside the house?"
"No. God, no."
"Did you know she was alive?"
Caroline hesitated.
"Caroline."
"Bianca called me about a month after the wedding."
Raffaele gripped the desk.
"What did she say?"
"She said Evelyn had made a choice and wouldn't be coming back."
"That doesn't mean alive."
"Then I heard someone in the background."
Raffaele stopped breathing.
"Evelyn?"
"I thought so."
"What did she say?"
"Only my name."
Caroline's voice broke.
"I heard her say, 'Carrie.' Nobody else called me that."
"And you stayed silent."
"I'm sorry."
"Seven years."
"I was terrified."
Raffaele's anger rose.
Then he remembered Evelyn's words.
Fear had ruled that house long enough.
He forced his voice lower.
"Detectives will contact you."
"I'll tell them everything."
"You should have seven years ago."
"I know."
Raffaele ended the call.
That evening, he returned to the hospital.
Evelyn was walking slowly with a physical therapist.
She looked exhausted but determined.
When the session ended, Raffaele handed her water.
"Caroline knew something."
Evelyn's face changed.
"What?"
He explained.
Evelyn sat silently.
Raffaele expected anger.
Instead she whispered, "Bianca probably terrified her."
"She did."
"Then I know exactly what that feels like."
"She could have helped you."
"Maybe."
"Evelyn."
She looked at him.
"Do you want me to hate everyone who failed me?"
"No."
"Because I don't have enough years left."
The sentence stayed with him.
Evelyn drank some water.
"Did Bianca say why she took me?"
"The money."
"That's part of it."
"You think there's more?"
Evelyn laughed softly.
"With Bianca? There's always more."
There was.
Dominic Greco provided it the next morning.
In exchange for consideration from prosecutors, he described the original plan.
Bianca had never intended to hold Evelyn for seven years.
The initial plan was forty-eight hours.
Drug her.
Create evidence she left voluntarily.
Move her to an isolated property.
Force her to reveal where she copied the ledger.
Then stage a permanent disappearance.
But Raffaele's response changed everything.
He locked down airports.
He hired investigators.
He sent people to every Castellano-owned property.
Moving Evelyn became too dangerous.
So Vittorio proposed leaving her in the mansion temporarily.
Nobody would look there.
When weeks became months, Bianca faced a new problem.
Killing Evelyn would create evidence.
Releasing her would expose everything.
Keeping her alive became the safest option.
Dominic delivered supplies through the tunnel.
Later, when he wanted out, Bianca paid him enough to disappear.
Another caretaker—a private nurse named Helen Price—visited occasionally under the belief Evelyn was a mentally unstable relative who couldn't safely live in public.
Helen eventually became suspicious.
She confronted Bianca.
Three days later, Helen died in what authorities ruled a car accident.
That case was reopened.
When Raffaele heard, he felt physically sick.
The damage spread wider every hour.
Bianca had ruined lives to preserve control.
Yet her financial crimes still did not explain the personal cruelty.
Why tell Evelyn about Sofia?
Why describe Luca?
Why return repeatedly instead of simply delegating the imprisonment?
The answer arrived when Bianca finally agreed to a formal recorded interview.
Raffaele did not attend.
Evelyn did.
She insisted.
Detective Nolan sat beside her.
Bianca entered behind glass.
For a moment, the sisters-in-law who had once planned wedding flowers together stared at each other.
Bianca smiled first.
"You look better."
Evelyn's hands tightened.
Detective Nolan leaned toward her.
"We can stop anytime."
Evelyn shook her head.
"No."
Bianca leaned back.
"I always admired that about you."
"What?"
"Your stubbornness."
Evelyn stared.
"Why?"
Bianca understood.
"Why you?"
"Yes."
Bianca considered.
"Because you were going to destroy my family."
"You stole from your family."
"I preserved it."
"With bribes?"
"With relationships."
"With shell companies?"
"With leverage."
"With kidnapping?"
Bianca's face hardened.
"That wasn't supposed to happen."
Evelyn almost laughed.
"Seven years happened accidentally?"
"No."
Bianca looked directly at her.
"The first day was strategy. The next seven years were consequences."
"That doesn't answer the question."
Bianca's eyes narrowed.
Evelyn leaned closer.
"Why did you hate me?"
"I didn't."
"You came downstairs and told me every time Raffaele took another step away from me."
"I told you reality."
"You enjoyed it."
Bianca became silent.
Evelyn suddenly understood.
"This was never only about the ledger."
"No."
"You were afraid I'd take your place."
Something flickered in Bianca's expression.
Evelyn continued.
"Your father died. Your mother was gone. Vittorio was getting older. Raffaele was the center of the family."
"Careful."
"And then he met me."
Bianca stared.
Evelyn's voice remained steady.
"He started asking questions."
"Because you poisoned him against us."
"He wanted legitimate businesses."
"He became ashamed of his name."
"He wanted Luca someday to inherit something clean."
Bianca's expression changed at Luca's name.
Evelyn saw it.
"You were losing control."
Bianca leaned forward.
"I raised Raffaele."
"You were four years older."
"I protected him."
"You controlled him."
"He survived because I controlled things."
"And when he loved someone you couldn't control, you couldn't tolerate it."
For the first time, Bianca's mask disappeared completely.
"You changed him."
Evelyn almost smiled.
"There it is."
Bianca realized too late.
Detective Nolan remained silent, letting the recording capture everything.
"You made him soft," Bianca said.
"No."
"He started talking about selling properties Vittorio had spent decades acquiring. He wanted audits. Lawyers. Compliance officers."
"Because your brother wanted a future."
"He wanted your future."
Evelyn shook her head.
"He chose it."
Bianca slammed her hand against the table.
"He chose you!"
The room became still.
Tears unexpectedly filled Bianca's eyes.
"He chose you over blood. Over history. Over everything I had built."
Evelyn stared at her.
"And that was enough for you to bury me alive?"
Bianca looked away.
No answer could make it better.
There was only truth.
Ugly.
Small.
Human.
Bianca had committed enormous crimes partly because she feared exposure.
But she had tortured Evelyn emotionally because she couldn't accept losing influence over her brother.
Money had provided the motive.
Possession had provided the cruelty.
After the interview, Evelyn stepped into the hallway.
Raffaele waited there.
She stopped.
"You watched?"
"Through the observation room."
"All of it?"
"Yes."
Evelyn leaned against the wall.
Raffaele approached slowly.
"I'm sorry."
She gave him a tired look.
"Thirteen."
"What?"
"That's thirteen apologies."
Despite everything, he smiled slightly.
Evelyn did too.
Then her smile disappeared.
"She loved you."
Raffaele looked through the glass toward Bianca.
"That wasn't love."
"No."
Evelyn turned toward him.
"But she believed it was."
Raffaele nodded.
"That's what frightens me."
A week later, Evelyn was released from the hospital.
Raffaele assumed she would stay in a protected hotel.
Instead she asked to return to the mansion.
He thought he had misunderstood.
"You want to go back?"
"Yes."
"Why?"
"Because I'm tired of Bianca deciding what places I'm allowed to survive."
Raffaele studied her.
"The bridal suite is sealed."
"Good."
"The chamber is police evidence."
"Even better."
"You don't have to prove anything."
"I'm not."
She looked him directly in the eyes.
"I'm going back because I choose to."
That word mattered.
Choose.
Raffaele nodded.
"Then you'll have whichever room you want."
Evelyn smiled faintly.
"Not yours."
"I wasn't going to suggest—"
"You were thinking it."
"I absolutely wasn't."
For one second, she laughed.
Not the broken laugh from the chamber.
A real one.
Raffaele had forgotten what it sounded like.
When they arrived at the mansion, Luca waited on the front steps holding Anna's hand.
Evelyn stepped from the car.
Luca ran forward, then stopped himself several feet away as though remembering she might not like sudden movement.
"Hi."
Evelyn smiled.
"Hi."
He pointed at her neck.
She was wearing his silver medal.
"You kept it."
"I told you scared people need protection."
Luca considered.
"Are you still scared?"
Evelyn looked toward the enormous house.
Then at Raffaele.
Then back at Luca.
"Sometimes."
Luca extended his hand.
"You can hold mine."
Evelyn stared at it.
Slowly, she took it.
Together they walked into the Castellano mansion.
For the first time in seven years, Evelyn entered through the front door.
