Mafia Hearts

The Garden After Seven Years · Chapter 6 of 6

Chapter 6

By My Life Story Editorial · Published · Updated

Healing did not happen dramatically.

There was no morning when Evelyn woke up and felt normal.

No single conversation erased the chamber.

No arrest erased seven years.

Instead, recovery happened in inches.

The first time Evelyn slept four consecutive hours.

The first time she entered a room and didn't immediately identify every exit.

The first time footsteps in the hallway didn't make her freeze.

The first time she allowed someone to close a door behind her.

She chose a guest bedroom on the western side of the mansion.

It had three windows.

She kept all of them open whenever weather allowed.

Raffaele never asked why.

He understood.

Luca became part of her recovery accidentally.

Children did not know how to treat trauma with ceremonial seriousness.

He simply included Evelyn in whatever mattered to him at that moment.

A Lego castle.

A spelling test.

A missing sock.

A debate over whether pancakes counted as dinner.

One Saturday morning he walked into the breakfast room and found Evelyn reading.

"Do you know dinosaurs?"

"A few personally."

Luca stared.

Evelyn kept a perfectly straight face.

"You're old."

Raffaele nearly choked on coffee.

Evelyn burst out laughing.

Luca looked confused.

Raffaele pointed toward her.

"That was dangerous."

"What?"

"Never call a woman old before breakfast."

Evelyn laughed harder.

The sound filled the room.

Raffaele looked at her.

She noticed.

Her laughter faded slightly.

Neither said anything.

Their relationship remained undefined.

That was intentional.

Raffaele had loved Evelyn before she disappeared.

But he refused to assume that surviving gave them the right to resume where they stopped.

Seven years had happened.

He had married.

Become a father.

Become a widower.

Evelyn had been imprisoned.

She had lost time nobody could return.

They needed to meet each other again.

Not resurrect younger versions of themselves.

Some evenings they talked.

About Sofia.

About Luca.

About Evelyn's parents, both of whom had died while she was missing.

That revelation almost broke her.

Bianca had never told her.

Evelyn learned that her mother had died believing her daughter was alive somewhere but unwilling to come home.

Raffaele stayed outside Evelyn's door through that entire night.

He didn't enter.

He simply sat there.

At dawn, the door opened.

Evelyn stood wrapped in a blanket.

"You stayed."

"Yes."

"Why didn't you knock?"

"You didn't ask me in."

She stared at him.

Then moved aside.

That morning, Evelyn cried against his shoulder for nearly an hour.

He held her.

Nothing more.

Some love stories restarted with kisses.

Theirs restarted with permission.

Meanwhile, the case against Bianca expanded.

Financial fraud.

Kidnapping.

Unlawful imprisonment.

Witness intimidation.

Conspiracy.

Evidence tampering.

Potential involvement in Helen Price's death.

Dominic agreed to testify.

Caroline returned to New York and gave a full statement.

Other employees came forward.

The structure Bianca had built on fear began collapsing because one person speaking made it easier for the next.

Raffaele cooperated fully.

That decision cost him.

Investigators discovered questionable activity involving older Castellano businesses.

Some predated him.

Some occurred during his leadership without his knowledge.

Raffaele could have fought disclosure.

Instead he ordered complete external audits.

He sold companies that couldn't be cleaned.

Closed others.

Fired longtime associates.

The family lost money.

A great deal of it.

People told him he was destroying the Castellano empire.

Raffaele's response remained the same.

"Then it deserved to be destroyed."

Evelyn heard about the comment from Anna.

That evening she found Raffaele in his father's study.

Stacks of financial files covered the desk.

"You look terrible."

Raffaele glanced up.

"Thank you."

"Have you eaten?"

"Probably."

"That's not an answer."

"Then no."

She placed a sandwich beside him.

Raffaele leaned back.

"Anna sent you?"

"Luca."

"Traitor."

"He says hungry people get grumpy."

"He says that because I say it to him."

"Apparently it applies genetically."

Raffaele smiled.

Then Evelyn noticed the papers.

"What's this?"

"Properties we're selling."

"Because of the investigation?"

"Partly."

She picked up one folder.

"The Connecticut house?"

"Yes."

"You love that house."

"No."

"You took me there six times."

"I loved you there."

The room went quiet.

Raffaele immediately looked away.

Evelyn lowered the folder.

"You can say things like that."

"I don't want you to feel pressured."

"I don't."

"Good."

"But you act like loving me is something you need to apologize for too."

Raffaele looked at her.

"Maybe it is."

"Why?"

"Because you lost seven years connected to my name."

"Bianca's choices."

"My house."

"Bianca's choices."

"My family."

"Raffaele."

She came around the desk.

"You don't get to claim responsibility for every bad thing simply because guilt feels easier than helplessness."

He stared at her.

She continued.

"You couldn't control what happened then."

"No."

"But you can control what happens now."

He looked toward the audit documents.

"That's what I'm trying to do."

"I know."

Evelyn touched his hand.

"That's why I'm still here."

Raffaele's eyes lifted.

She didn't pull away.

Neither did he.

The moment stretched.

Then a crash sounded downstairs.

Both jumped.

Raffaele moved first.

He reached the hallway as the security alarm began.

Marco ran from the west corridor.

"Fire in the archive room!"

Smoke poured from below.

Raffaele's heart slammed.

"The case records?"

"Copies. Originals are with police."

Good.

Then he remembered something else.

"The architectural plans."

"Still inside."

Evelyn appeared behind him.

"What's happening?"

"Stay upstairs."

She immediately bristled.

"Don't do that."

"Evelyn—"

"Don't decide for me."

He stopped.

The old Raffaele might have argued.

Instead he said, "There's a fire in the archives. We need to get outside."

That was different.

Information.

Choice.

Evelyn nodded.

"Where's Luca?"

"Anna already has him."

They moved toward the main stairs.

Smoke thickened.

Sprinklers activated.

Outside, fire crews arrived within minutes.

The blaze was contained before it spread beyond two rooms.

Investigators quickly concluded it was arson.

A broken basement window.

Accelerant.

A man seen near the property line.

Dominic identified the likely culprit as one of Vittorio's former associates.

The purpose was probably evidence destruction.

But the original records were safe.

For Raffaele, the fire changed something deeper.

Standing outside beneath flashing emergency lights, he watched Evelyn comfort Luca.

Seven years earlier, the Castellano mansion had represented legacy.

Power.

Name.

History.

Now it looked like wood and stone.

Replaceable.

People were not.

Two months later, Bianca accepted a plea arrangement covering several charges while other investigations continued.

She would spend many years in prison.

Raffaele attended sentencing.

Evelyn did not.

She had no interest.

When the judge asked Bianca whether she wanted to speak, Bianca stood.

For the first time, she didn't look toward Raffaele.

She looked down.

"I told myself everything I did was necessary."

Her voice shook.

"I told myself I protected my family."

She paused.

"I don't expect forgiveness."

Raffaele listened without emotion.

Bianca continued.

"I think I kept saying I was protecting people because admitting I wanted to control them would have made me see myself clearly."

She sat.

Raffaele left before deputies took her away.

Outside the courthouse, reporters shouted questions.

"Mr. Castellano, do you forgive your sister?"

"Mr. Castellano, will Evelyn Mercer testify in the remaining cases?"

"Are you and Miss Mercer together again?"

Raffaele ignored all of them.

That evening, he found Evelyn in the garden.

"It's over?"

"That part."

She nodded.

"How do you feel?"

"I don't know."

"Acceptable answer."

Raffaele stood beside her.

A fountain trickled nearby.

Autumn had become winter.

Most roses were gone.

Evelyn stared toward the eastern wing.

"What are you going to do with the bridal suite?"

"Demolish it."

She looked at him sharply.

"No."

Raffaele blinked.

"No?"

"That room doesn't belong to Bianca."

"I thought you'd never want to see it again."

"I don't."

"Then—"

"But I don't want it turned into rubble because of her either."

"What do you want?"

Evelyn thought.

"Windows."

"It has windows."

"Bigger ones."

Raffaele smiled slightly.

"Anything else?"

"Take up the floor."

"All of it?"

"Every board."

"What should replace it?"

"Something bright."

He nodded.

"And the chamber?"

"Seal the tunnel."

"Done."

"Keep the opening visible."

That surprised him.

"Why?"

"Because hidden things are dangerous."

Raffaele studied her.

Evelyn smiled.

"Cover it with glass."

He understood.

Turn the secret into something impossible to conceal again.

"Anything else?"

"Yes."

"What?"

"No bridal suite."

"What should it be?"

Evelyn looked toward the house.

"A family room."

Raffaele's chest tightened.

"Family?"

She glanced at him.

"Don't make a big thing out of one word."

"I'm saying nothing."

"Your face is saying plenty."

Raffaele laughed.

Evelyn joined him.

Then silence settled between them.

Comfortable.

Raffaele looked at her.

"Evelyn."

"Yes?"

"I loved you when you disappeared."

She held his gaze.

"I know."

"I never stopped completely."

"I know that too."

"I don't know what we're supposed to do with that."

Evelyn stepped closer.

"Maybe stop trying to solve seven years tonight."

Raffaele nodded.

"All right."

"Ask me something smaller."

He considered.

"Dinner?"

She smiled.

"Yes."

"Tomorrow?"

"Yes."

"Outside this house?"

"Definitely."

Raffaele smiled.

"Is it a date?"

Evelyn pretended to think.

"Ask me tomorrow."

Then she kissed his cheek and walked toward the house.

Raffaele remained in the garden like a man who had just been given back something he had stopped believing existed.

Not the past.

The future.
