Chapter 5

By My Life Story Editorial · Published · Updated

Carlo Vescari disappeared before federal agents secured the freight terminal.

Nobody understood how.

Three exits were covered.

The river side was fenced.

His vehicles remained behind.

Yet when arrests began, Carlo was gone.

Captain Doyle was taken into custody.

Senator Harrow was detained.

Marcus entered federal protection.

The evidence was secured.

But Adrian did not sleep.

Elena heard him pacing above her guest room.

She opened the door at 2:41 a.m.

Then laughed quietly.

Adrian looked down from the upstairs landing.

“What?”

She pointed upward.

“You’re doing it again.”

“Doing what?”

“Pacing.”

He stopped.

Elena crossed her arms.

“I bought a broom, you know.”

His expression softened.

“I thought you were asleep.”

“I was.”

“I’m sorry.”

She climbed the stairs.

“You apologized faster this time.”

“Practice.”

They stood near the windows.

Chicago glittered below.

Adrian poured two glasses of water.

Elena took one.

“Why are you worried?”

“Carlo.”

“You think he’ll come back.”

“I know he will.”

“For me?”

“For everyone.”

Elena leaned against the windowsill.

“Then why disappear?”

“Because someone helped him.”

“Inside your organization?”

Adrian nodded.

“That means the last three weeks of late-night meetings…”

“I knew information was leaking.”

“You were trying to find the traitor.”

“Yes.”

Elena stared.

“So the noise that started everything was because somebody inside your circle was betraying you.”

“Yes.”

“And if you hadn’t been pacing…”

“You wouldn’t have come upstairs.”

“And if I hadn’t come upstairs…”

“I might not have known about your father until it was too late.”

Elena looked at him.

“That’s disturbingly poetic.”

“I don’t do poetic.”

“You bought a building for a woman who threw money on your floor.”

“That was security.”

“Of course.”

He smiled.

This time he didn’t hide it.

Elena’s heartbeat changed.

She looked away.

“Who do you suspect?”

Adrian became serious.

“Someone close.”

“Vincent?”

“No.”

“You trust him?”

“With my life.”

“Then who?”

Adrian hesitated.

“My cousin.”

“Name?”

“Luca Vale.”

Elena remembered one of the men sitting at Adrian’s table the first night.

Younger than Adrian.

Perfect suit.

Watchful eyes.

“He laughed when I called you a caged tiger.”

Adrian stared.

“You remember that?”

“I remember everyone who laughs at my insults.”

“Elena.”

“Yes, him.”

Adrian looked toward the door.

“He has been with me since we were children.”

“Why suspect him?”

“Money moved through an account he controlled.”

“That’s evidence.”

“It could be planted.”

“You don’t want it to be him.”

“No.”

Elena understood.

Betrayal hurt differently when it came from family.

The next morning, Luca arrived.

Elena watched from the kitchen as he embraced Adrian.

“Hell of a night.”

“Carlo escaped.”

“I heard.”

“You know how?”

Luca poured coffee.

“No.”

Adrian studied him.

Elena noticed something.

Luca’s left cuff.

A dark streak.

Grease.

She remembered the freight terminal.

The side exit near the loading mechanism had been coated in old industrial grease.

She said nothing.

Luca noticed her.

“The famous neighbor.”

“Elena.”

“We’ve met.”

“Briefly.”

He smiled.

“Hard to forget the slippers.”

Adrian’s expression cooled.

Luca lifted both hands.

“Compliment.”

Elena smiled politely.

“What happened to your cuff?”

Luca looked down.

The smile vanished for half a second.

“Car trouble.”

Adrian noticed.

“What car?”

“My Audi.”

“Which garage?”

Luca laughed.

“What is this?”

Elena walked toward the refrigerator.

“Nothing. I restore paintings. Stains bother me.”

Luca looked at Adrian.

“You keeping her here?”

“She’s staying.”

“For how long?”

Adrian’s eyes sharpened.

“Why?”

Luca shrugged.

“Curious.”

An hour after Luca left, Elena showed Adrian what she had noticed.

He immediately called Vincent.

“Pull traffic cameras from the terminal. Check Luca’s vehicle.”

Vincent returned thirty minutes later.

“He lied.”

Adrian’s face hardened.

“His Audi never left his garage yesterday.”

Silence.

Elena touched Adrian’s arm.

He pulled away.

Not from her.

From emotion.

“Where is Luca now?”

Vincent looked at his phone.

“Gone.”

Adrian turned toward the window.

His cousin had betrayed him.

And that betrayal changed everything.

They searched Luca’s apartment.

Empty.

His office.

Cleared.

His safe.

Empty.

Then Elena noticed one object left behind.

A framed photograph.

Adrian and Luca at perhaps sixteen years old.

Standing beside an older woman.

“Your mother?”

“Yes.”

There was writing on the back.

Adrian read it.

His face changed.

Elena moved closer.

“What?”

He handed her the frame.

Written in black ink:

You chose strangers over blood. Now choose which one you lose.

Elena’s stomach turned.

“Which one?”

Adrian immediately grabbed his phone.

“Marcus.”

Vincent checked.

“Safe.”

“Bellamy?”

A call.

“No answer.”

Elena went cold.

“Dr. Bellamy.”

They raced to the institute.

The front door was open.

No broken glass.

No alarm.

Inside, everything looked normal.

Too normal.

Elena ran toward the restoration laboratory.

“Dr. Bellamy?”

No answer.

Her office was empty.

Then Elena saw the seventeenth-century portrait.

Something had been carved into the temporary backing board.

MIDNIGHT. YOUR BUILDING. ROOF. COME ALONE.

Adrian stared at the message.

Elena’s phone rang.

Unknown number.

She answered.

“Hello?”

Dr. Bellamy’s voice.

Shaking.

“Elena?”

“Where are you?”

A man spoke.

Luca.

“Tell Adrian to follow instructions.”

Adrian took the phone.

“Luca.”

“Cousin.”

“You hurt her and I will—”

“You won’t do anything.”

Adrian’s face went cold.

“What do you want?”

“Control.”

“Of what?”

“Everything you refused to share.”

“The waterfront?”

“The organization.”

Adrian laughed quietly.

“You never wanted leadership.”

“No. I wanted respect.”

“You had it.”

“From everyone except you.”

Adrian said nothing.

Luca continued.

“Midnight. Roof of Elena’s building. Bring the evidence copies.”

“The federal agents have originals.”

“I know.”

“Then they’re useless.”

“Not to Carlo.”

Elena looked at Adrian.

Carlo was alive and working with Luca.

Luca lowered his voice.

“And bring Elena.”

Adrian’s hand tightened.

“No.”

“Elena comes, or Dr. Bellamy goes over the edge.”

Elena’s face drained.

Adrian closed his eyes.

Luca laughed.

“Finally something scares you.”

The call ended.

Elena immediately said, “I’m going.”

“No.”

“Adrian—”

“No.”

“She is there because of me.”

“She is there because Luca is a coward.”

“He asked for me.”

“That doesn’t mean he gets you.”

“Adrian.”

He turned.

Elena took his face between her hands.

The gesture stunned him.

“Listen to me.”

His eyes held hers.

“You taught me something.”

“What?”

“Ownership matters.”

He frowned.

“This is my building too.”

“Technically mine.”

“You bought it because of me.”

“That doesn’t make you owner.”

“Not the point.”

Despite everything, his mouth almost moved.

Elena continued.

“My home is there. Mrs. Donnelly is there. Families are there. Dr. Bellamy is on the roof. I am not hiding.”

Adrian looked at her for a long time.

Then he whispered,

“I don’t know how to lose you.”

Elena’s breath caught.

Neither moved.

She had known.

Perhaps for days.

Maybe since the warehouse.

Maybe since he shielded her from the window.

Maybe even since he endured her broom without throwing her out.

She touched his cheek.

“Then don’t.”

He kissed her.

It wasn’t dramatic.

It wasn’t rushed.

It began carefully, almost uncertainly, as though a man who controlled nearly everything in his life had finally found the one thing he was afraid to touch.

Elena leaned into him.

When they separated, Adrian rested his forehead against hers.

“You still stay behind me tonight.”

“No promises.”

“Elena.”

“Fine.”

At 11:58 p.m., they stepped onto the roof.

Dr. Bellamy sat tied to a chair.

Luca stood behind her.

Carlo Vescari stood near the edge.

Six armed men surrounded them.

Wind tore across the rooftop.

Adrian carried the briefcase.

Elena walked beside him.

Luca smiled.

“The bunny slippers would’ve been better.”

Elena glared.

“Keep talking. I’m developing opinions.”

Carlo laughed.

Adrian stopped.

“Let her go.”

Luca looked toward the case.

“First the files.”

Adrian placed it on the ground.

Carlo approached.

Elena looked toward Dr. Bellamy.

Their eyes met.

Dr. Bellamy subtly moved one hand.

The rope was loose.

Smart woman.

Adrian saw it too.

Carlo picked up the briefcase.

Opened it.

Empty.

His expression changed.

Adrian smiled.

“You really thought I’d bring evidence?”

Luca raised his weapon.

“You—”

The rooftop doors burst open.

Vincent and federal agents entered.

Dr. Bellamy dropped sideways from the chair.

Elena ran toward her.

Chaos erupted.

Carlo reached the opposite stairwell.

Luca fired once into the air and ran after him.

Adrian pursued.

“Elena, stay!”

Naturally, Elena did not.

She helped Dr. Bellamy to safety.

Then she saw Adrian disappear down the stairwell.

And followed.
