Mafia Hearts

The Key Above Apartment Four · Chapter 6 of 6

Chapter 6

By My Life Story Editorial · Published · Updated

Elena reached the nineteenth floor just in time to hear a gunshot.

She froze.

“Adrian!”

No answer.

She ran.

Barely twenty-four hours earlier, she would have considered chasing armed criminals through a building objectively insane.

Now it seemed merely consistent with the week she was having.

She reached the eighteenth-floor corridor.

Adrian stood near the elevator.

Blood ran down his left arm.

Elena’s heart stopped.

“You’re shot.”

“Graze.”

“You always say that.”

“It actually is.”

“Where are they?”

“Luca went downstairs. Carlo took the service stairs.”

Elena grabbed his sleeve.

“Sit down.”

“No.”

“You are bleeding on the carpet.”

“I own the carpet.”

“That does not improve the situation.”

Despite everything, he smiled.

Footsteps thundered below.

Vincent appeared.

“Carlo’s heading for the garage.”

“Luca?”

“Missing.”

Adrian looked at Elena.

“Stay here.”

“No.”

“Elena.”

She pointed at him.

“You’re injured.”

“Graze.”

“You have used that word too many times this week.”

Vincent fought a smile.

Adrian sighed.

“Fine. Stay with Vincent.”

They reached the parking garage.

The same place where Elena’s tires had been slashed.

The same place where someone had fired the first shot.

Everything had circled back.

A black sedan screeched toward the exit.

Carlo drove.

Adrian’s security barrier slammed down.

The sedan crashed through half of it.

Airbags deployed.

Carlo stumbled out.

He held a gun.

Federal agents surrounded him.

“Drop it!”

Carlo laughed.

“You think this changes anything?”

Adrian walked forward.

“It changes your evening.”

“You built your empire by doing everything you accuse me of.”

“No.”

“You’re no better.”

Adrian stopped.

“Maybe once.”

Elena looked at him.

Adrian continued.

“But I learned something.”

Carlo smiled.

“From her?”

Adrian glanced at Elena.

“Yes.”

Carlo’s expression hardened.

He lifted the gun.

Agents reacted.

A shot cracked.

Carlo fell.

Silence.

The weapon slid across the concrete.

Elena closed her eyes.

Adrian moved toward her.

“It’s over.”

She looked at him.

“Really this time?”

“Yes.”

Then another voice came from behind.

“No.”

Luca stepped from the stairwell.

He held Dr. Bellamy’s small utility knife against Marcus Renner’s throat.

Elena froze.

“Dad.”

Marcus looked terrified.

“Sorry, Ellie.”

Luca smiled.

“Everyone forgot about the father.”

Adrian stepped forward.

“Let him go.”

“You keep saying that.”

“What do you want?”

“A car.”

“You won’t make it out.”

“Then I take him with me.”

Elena looked around.

Federal agents held positions.

Nobody had a clear shot.

Marcus’s face was pale.

Elena suddenly remembered something her father used to tell her as a child.

When Elena was eight, Marcus taught her to dance standing on his shoes.

When she became frightened, he always said the same thing.

Look at me, Ellie. Not the floor.

Elena looked directly at him.

Marcus understood.

She took one slow step toward Luca.

Adrian immediately said, “Elena.”

She ignored him.

“Luca.”

His eyes moved toward her.

“You wanted me, remember?”

“Elena, stop,” Adrian said.

Luca smiled.

“Still fearless.”

“No.”

She took another step.

“I was never fearless.”

“What?”

“I was exhausted.”

A confused laugh.

“That first night. The broom. The slippers. I wasn’t brave. I was too tired to understand how stupid I was being.”

Adrian muttered, “Accurate.”

Elena almost smiled.

She continued.

“You think Adrian chose strangers over blood.”

Luca’s expression tightened.

“He did.”

“No. He chose people who didn’t betray him.”

Luca’s grip changed.

Marcus watched Elena.

“Family isn’t a free pass.”

“Shut up.”

“You wanted his respect?”

“I earned it.”

“Then why did you sell him out?”

Luca’s eyes flashed.

“Because he never saw me.”

There it was.

Pain beneath anger.

Elena took another step.

“Maybe he did.”

“No.”

“Maybe you just hated what he saw.”

Luca’s attention stayed on her.

Marcus moved.

He drove his elbow backward.

Luca staggered.

Adrian lunged.

Vincent grabbed Marcus.

Federal agents tackled Luca before he could recover.

It ended in seconds.

Elena ran to Marcus.

He held her.

“I’m sorry.”

“Stop saying that.”

“I made such a mess.”

“Yes.”

He laughed weakly.

“You’re supposed to comfort me.”

“I’m considering it.”

Adrian approached.

Marcus looked at him.

“You kept her alive.”

“She mostly kept herself alive.”

“That sounds like her.”

Elena turned toward Adrian.

His sleeve was soaked with blood.

“We are going to a hospital.”

“It’s a graze.”

“Say that word again and I’ll find another broom.”

Adrian surrendered.

“For the record,” Marcus said, “I liked the slippers.”

Elena glared at him.

Three weeks later, Senator Harrow was formally indicted on corruption, conspiracy, bribery, and racketeering charges.

Captain Doyle faced federal prosecution.

Carlo Vescari survived his gunshot wound and entered federal custody.

Luca accepted a plea agreement after investigators discovered years of financial records linking him to Vescari.

Marcus testified.

In exchange for cooperation, he avoided the worst possible sentence, though he still faced consequences for his role in the shell companies.

Elena supported him.

But for the first time in her life, she did not rescue him.

“You need to fix your own mistakes,” she told him.

Marcus nodded.

“I know.”

And he did.

Slowly.

Adrian began changing too.

He moved his late-night meetings to a private office downtown.

The penthouse became quiet after eleven.

Elena returned to Apartment 4B.

For exactly two nights.

On the third night, at 2:17 a.m., someone knocked.

Elena opened the door.

Adrian stood there.

Barefoot.

Black trousers.

White shirt half-buttoned.

Almost exactly like the first night.

She stared.

“You are aware of the time?”

“Yes.”

“You’re violating your own quiet policy.”

“I’m not pacing.”

“That is true.”

He held something behind his back.

Elena narrowed her eyes.

“What is that?”

Adrian revealed a pair of new pink bunny slippers.

More ridiculous than the originals.

Huge ears.

White tails.

Elena stared.

“No.”

“Yes.”

“Where did you find those?”

“I have resources.”

“You bought me slippers?”

“You lost the originals.”

“They were evidence.”

“I replaced them.”

Elena laughed.

Adrian looked suddenly nervous.

That was unusual.

She noticed a small box in his other hand.

Her smile disappeared.

“Adrian.”

He looked at the box.

Then at her.

“Not yet.”

She blinked.

“What?”

“I’m not proposing.”

“Thank God.”

He frowned.

“That reaction was unnecessarily enthusiastic.”

She smiled.

“What is it?”

He opened the box.

A key.

“To what?”

“The penthouse.”

Elena’s expression softened.

“You already let me upstairs.”

“This is different.”

“How?”

“You don’t need permission.”

She looked at him.

Adrian spoke quietly.

“I spent most of my life making sure nobody could take my home away from me.”

Elena listened.

“And somewhere along the way, I made it impossible for anyone to enter.”

She swallowed.

He offered the key.

“I want you to be able to.”

Elena took it.

Then she looked toward the ceiling.

“Only under one condition.”

Adrian sighed.

“What?”

“Carpet.”

He laughed.

“Done.”
