Chapter 5

The drive to the mansion took eleven minutes.

Adrian completed it in seven.

Police vehicles followed.

Emily sat beside him.

“You should have stayed with Lily.”

“So should you.”

“She’s with six armed guards.”

“So was Rose.”

Adrian had no answer.

They reached the gate.

No damage.

No forced entry.

That frightened Adrian more.

Silas’s people had entered through legitimate access.

Inside the mansion, Lily ran from the hallway the moment Emily entered.

“Mommy!”

Emily dropped to her knees.

Lily crashed into her.

“Where’s Rose?” Adrian asked.

The acting security chief looked sick.

“Gone.”

“How?”

“Kitchen delivery entrance.”

“Cameras?”

“Looped.”

“Again?”

The man lowered his eyes.

Adrian understood.

The traitor remained inside.

He turned toward the guards.

“Nobody leaves.”

Emily carried Lily into the study.

Adrian followed.

The little girl sensed something wrong.

“Where’s Rosie?”

Adrian crouched.

“She had to go somewhere.”

“Is she coming back?”

He remembered the pinky promise.

“Yes.”

Emily looked at him.

Adrian added, “We’re bringing her home.”

Lily held out her finger.

Adrian hooked his around it.

“Promise.”

After Lily fell asleep, Adrian gathered every staff member with security access in the ballroom.

Twenty-three people.

He walked slowly between them.

“These walls have protected my family for decades.”

Family.

The word came naturally.

Emily noticed.

Adrian continued.

“Someone standing here opened those walls to my father.”

Nobody moved.

“I could threaten you.”

His gaze swept the room.

“My father would.”

Silence.

“But I’m not him.”

Victor stood near Reed under police supervision.

Adrian glanced toward him.

“I spent years believing fear created loyalty.”

His eyes returned to the staff.

“I was wrong.”

He placed Rose’s keycard on a table.

“Someone helped Silas take her. That person has one opportunity to speak before I give everything to Detective Reed.”

A young technician began sweating.

Adrian saw it.

So did Reed.

The man was twenty-six.

Evan Cross.

Employed eight months.

Adrian looked directly at him.

“Evan?”

The technician’s eyes filled with panic.

“I didn’t know they’d take Rose.”

Emily stepped forward.

“What did you think they would do?”

Evan broke.

“They paid me to disable cameras.”

“How long?”

“Months.”

Adrian’s chest tightened.

“Emily’s disappearance?”

Evan nodded.

“I didn’t know Victor was taking her.”

Victor cursed quietly.

Adrian continued.

“Tonight?”

“They said they needed the kitchen camera off for four minutes.”

“Who?”

“I only spoke to one man.”

“Name.”

“Peter Lorne.”

Adrian knew him.

Former Mercer driver.

Worked for Silas years ago.

“Where is Rose?”

“I don’t know.”

Reed stepped forward.

“We’ll take it from here.”

Adrian did not argue.

That surprised Reed.

Evan was arrested.

His phone contained encrypted messages.

One included coordinates.

Northern Maine.

The hunting lodge.

Silas wanted Adrian to find him.

That meant a trap.

Adrian went anyway.

But not alone.

State police established a perimeter miles away.

Federal agents monitored the private airstrip.

Reed coordinated the operation.

Victor traveled in custody, wearing a tracker and cooperating under a provisional agreement.

Emily refused to remain behind.

Adrian argued for ten full minutes.

Finally she said, “Rose took us in when nobody else would. I’m not waiting in a mansion while someone else rescues her.”

Adrian stared at her.

“You are impossibly stubborn.”

Emily folded her arms.

“Lily gets it from me.”

Adrian almost smiled.

Lily remained at a secure location with two female officers and the house cook she adored.

Before Emily left, Lily hugged her tightly.

“Come back.”

Emily kissed her forehead.

“Always.”

Then Lily hugged Adrian too.

He froze.

She whispered, “Bring Rosie.”

Adrian held her.

“I will.”

The lodge appeared through heavy snow shortly before dawn.

Adrian remembered arriving there as a child.

His father hunted deer.

Adrian hated it.

Silas mocked him for hesitating before shooting.

“A Mercer cannot afford sympathy.”

Now Adrian stood outside the same lodge preparing to confront the man who taught him that lesson.

Victor pointed toward a side entrance.

“Underground storage tunnel.”

Reed frowned.

“You certain?”

“I helped renovate it twenty years ago.”

Adrian looked at him.

“You were nineteen.”

Victor shrugged.

“Silas started recruiting early.”

They entered through the tunnel.

Agents approached from the front.

Inside, the lodge was silent.

Then a speaker clicked on.

Silas’s voice filled the corridor.

“Welcome home, Adrian.”

Adrian looked toward the ceiling.

“I’m here.”

“You brought police.”

“Times change.”

“You disappoint me.”

“I’ll survive.”

A door opened remotely.

Light spilled into a large hall.

Rose sat tied to a chair near the fireplace.

Alive.

Emily whispered, “Rose.”

Rose looked toward them.

“Don’t come in!”

Adrian stopped.

Silas emerged from a shadowed balcony.

Older.

Thinner.

But unmistakable.

Adrian stared at the father he had buried nine years earlier.

Silas smiled.

“You look like your mother when you’re angry.”

“Let Rose go.”

“Give me Emily.”

“No.”

Silas looked toward her.

“Mrs. Hart. Your husband caused extraordinary inconvenience.”

Emily’s entire body went rigid.

“You murdered him.”

“He murdered himself by failing to understand his position.”

Adrian stepped forward.

“No.”

Silas looked at him.

“Daniel died because you decided his life was disposable.”

Silas smiled.

“Very philosophical.”

“It’s over.”

“Nothing is over.”

Silas produced a small remote control.

Victor paled.

“Adrian.”

“What?”

“Fuel system.”

Silas smiled.

“The lodge can become remarkably warm.”

Reed spoke into his radio.

Silas raised the remote.

“Signals are blocked.”

Then he looked at Adrian.

“One choice.”

Silas pointed toward Emily.

“Her.”

Then toward Rose.

“Or everyone.”

Adrian understood what his father wanted.

Submission.

Proof that power meant sacrificing the vulnerable.

The same lesson Silas had taught him throughout childhood.

Adrian looked at Emily.

She shook her head.

“No.”

Silas smiled.

“Choose.”

Adrian lowered his weapon.

“Fine.”

Emily stared.

“Adrian.”

He stepped into the hall.

“I choose.”

Silas leaned forward.

Adrian looked directly at his father.

“My family.”

Then he kicked a metal service cart toward the fireplace.

The crash distracted Silas for less than a second.

Enough.

Victor moved first.

He tackled the guard beside Rose.

Reed fired toward the balcony railing, forcing Silas back.

Emily ran to Rose.

Adrian charged upstairs.

Silas fled through the rear corridor.

Adrian followed.

They reached the old trophy room.

Silas turned.

Weapon raised.

Father and son faced each other.

“You became weak,” Silas said.

Adrian stopped.

“No.”

“You love them.”

Adrian thought of Lily coloring in his study.

Emily arguing with him in the conservatory.

Rose placing apple slices beside his coffee.

“Yes.”

Silas laughed.

“Then they can be used against you.”

“Maybe.”

Adrian lowered his weapon slightly.

“But loving people also gives you something you never had.”

“What?”

“A reason not to become you.”

Silas fired.

The shot missed.

Adrian ducked behind a cabinet.

Before Silas could fire again, Victor appeared in the doorway.

“Enough.”

Silas turned.

“Victor.”

Victor’s weapon shook.

Silas smiled.

“You owe me everything.”

Victor’s face twisted.

“That was the lie that ruined my life.”

Silas aimed at him.

Adrian moved.

He struck Silas’s arm.

The weapon fell.

The two men crashed against the floor.

Silas was older but vicious.

Adrian overpowered him.

His fist drew back.

For a moment, Silas smiled.

“Yes.”

Adrian froze.

He understood.

His father wanted violence.

Wanted Adrian to prove they were the same.

So Adrian lowered his fist.

“No.”

Silas’s smile vanished.

Adrian stood.

Reed entered.

“Silas Mercer, you’re under arrest.”

Silas stared at his son.

“You’d let them cage me?”

Adrian looked down at him.

“I’m letting the world finally see you.”

Handcuffs clicked around Silas’s wrists.

Downstairs, Rose was freed.

Emily hugged her.

Victor sat against the wall with blood on his temple but alive.

When Adrian returned, Rose touched his face.

“Took you long enough.”

He laughed.

Emily stared.

Rose looked at her.

“What?”

“I’ve never heard him laugh like that.”

Rose smiled knowingly.

“You haven’t been here long enough.”

Adrian turned toward Emily.

She stepped closer.

“You kept your promise.”

“Not yet.”

“What?”

He looked toward the door.

“We still have to get home.”

Home.

Emily heard the word.

So did Adrian.

And for the first time, neither thought of the mansion itself.

They thought of Lily waiting inside it.
