The Door Beyond the West Wing · Chapter 2 of 6

Chapter 2

By My Life Story Editorial · Published · Updated

Dominic Moretti had faced enemies who carried weapons.

He had faced men who promised to destroy everything he built.

He had watched powerful families turn against him, watched friendships become betrayals, and watched people disappear when they thought they could challenge his authority.

But nothing had prepared him for a three-year-old girl standing in his arms and asking one simple question.

“Can you save my mommy?”

Because Dominic Moretti had always known how to deal with threats.

He knew how to negotiate.

He knew how to intimidate.

He knew how to win.

But he had never learned how to answer a child who looked at him like he was the only person in the world who could make everything okay.

And somehow…

that scared him more than any enemy ever had.

The moment Dominic stepped into Clara’s small room in the staff quarters, the entire mansion seemed to stop breathing.

Security men stood outside the door.

Doctors rushed inside.

Employees whispered in the hallway.

Everyone wanted to know what had happened.

Everyone wanted to know why the boss himself was carrying a little girl through the mansion in the middle of the night.

But nobody dared to ask.

Nobody except Marco.

Marco Bellini had worked beside Dominic for almost fifteen years.

He had seen Dominic angry.

He had seen Dominic ruthless.

He had seen Dominic destroy entire business deals with a single phone call.

But he had never seen Dominic look afraid.

Until tonight.

“Boss,” Marco said quietly as the emergency doctor examined Clara, “who is the child?”

Dominic didn't answer immediately.

His eyes remained fixed on Lily.

The little girl sat on the edge of the bed wrapped in his expensive black jacket.

Her tiny hands held her stuffed rabbit tightly.

She looked exhausted.

Terrified.

But she refused to cry anymore.

Because she was waiting.

Waiting to see if her mother would wake up.

“She’s Clara’s daughter,” Dominic finally said.

Marco frowned.

“Clara has a daughter?”

The question carried the same confusion everyone else felt.

And Dominic hated that.

Because it meant everyone knew something about his own house that he didn't.

“How long has Clara worked here?” Dominic asked.

Marco looked surprised.

“Almost four years.”

“Four years.”

Dominic repeated the words slowly.

Four years.

Four years of having a woman living under his roof.

Four years of seeing her walk through his halls.

Four years of security reports.

Background checks.

Employee records.

And somehow…

there was no mention of a child.

No mention of Lily.

No mention that Clara wasn't alone.

“Bring me her file,” Dominic ordered.

Marco nodded.

“Immediately.”

Inside the room, the doctor finally stepped away from Clara.

“She’s stable.”

Everyone released a breath.

Lily immediately climbed down from the bed.

“Mommy?”

The doctor smiled gently.

“She’s sleeping, sweetheart. She needs rest.”

“Will she wake up?”

The question was so innocent that even the doctor looked away for a moment.

“Yes,” he finally answered.

“She will.”

Lily nodded.

Then she looked at Dominic.

As if she needed him to confirm it.

Dominic slowly walked closer.

“She’s going to be okay.”

Lily studied his face.

“You promise?”

Dominic had made thousands of promises in his life.

Promises involving money.

Power.

Protection.

Deals.

But this one felt different.

This one mattered.

“Yes,” he said.

“I promise.”

The little girl seemed satisfied.

For the first time that night, her shoulders relaxed.

And Dominic noticed something strange.

A small detail nobody else would have noticed.

Lily trusted him.

A man feared by the entire city.

A man whose name made criminals disappear.

A man children were usually warned to stay away from.

Yet this little girl had walked straight to his door.

An hour later, Clara finally opened her eyes.

The first thing she saw was Lily.

The second thing she saw was Dominic Moretti.

And immediately…

fear replaced confusion.

Her breathing stopped.

“No…”

Her voice was weak.

But Dominic heard it.

Clara tried to sit up.

“Where is Lily?”

“Mommy!”

Lily rushed into her arms.

Clara held her daughter tightly.

Too tightly.

Like she was afraid someone would take her away.

“Oh my God…”

She buried her face in Lily’s hair.

“I told you not to leave the room.”

“I was scared,” Lily whispered.

Clara closed her eyes.

A tear slipped down her cheek.

“I know, baby.”

Then she looked at Dominic.

And everything changed.

Because Clara knew exactly what this meant.

He knew.

After years of hiding the truth…

Dominic Moretti finally knew about Lily.

“You have a daughter,” Dominic said quietly.

Clara looked down.

“Yes.”

“Why didn't I know?”

The question wasn't angry.

That somehow made it worse.

Clara looked like she wanted to explain.

But she didn't know where to begin.

Because the truth was complicated.

And dangerous.

“I was protecting her,” she whispered.

“From who?”

Silence.

Dominic stepped closer.

“Clara.”

Her eyes filled with fear.

“Please.”

That single word stopped him.

Not because she was begging.

But because Dominic recognized something.

Clara wasn't afraid of him.

She was afraid of something worse.

Something that had been following her.

Something she had been hiding from.

Years earlier, before working at the Moretti mansion, Clara Bennett had lived a completely different life.

She wasn't always a quiet maid who avoided attention.

She had once been a woman with dreams.

A woman with plans.

A woman who believed good people could survive in a dangerous world.

But then she discovered something she wasn't supposed to know.

Something involving powerful men.

Money.

And betrayal.

After that night, Clara disappeared.

She changed her name.

Changed her life.

And when Lily was born, Clara made one promise.

Nobody would ever use her daughter to hurt her.

Not criminals.

Not enemies.

Not even powerful men like Dominic Moretti.

But hiding inside his mansion had seemed like the safest option.

Until now.

Dominic walked to the window.

The rain outside had become heavier.

“Four years,” he said.

“You lived here for four years.”

Clara looked away.

“I needed a place nobody would search.”

“And you thought my house was the safest place?”

Her silence answered.

Dominic turned around.

“Why?”

Clara hesitated.

Then she looked at Lily.

“She has your protection.”

The room became silent.

Dominic's expression changed.

“My protection?”

Clara nodded slowly.

“Everyone knows nobody touches what belongs to Dominic Moretti.”

Marco, standing near the door, looked shocked.

But Dominic noticed something else.

Clara had chosen his mansion.

Not because she trusted him.

Because she trusted his reputation.

The same reputation he hated.

The same reputation that had caused fear everywhere he went.

Had actually saved a child.

For the first time, Dominic wondered if the monster everyone saw…

could still be used for something good.

A few minutes later, Marco returned with Clara's file.

His expression was different.

Serious.

“Boss.”

Dominic took the folder.

“What did you find?”

Marco hesitated.

“That’s the problem.”

Dominic opened the file.

At first, everything looked normal.

Clara Bennett.

Age.

Employment history.

References.

Then he reached the final pages.

And stopped.

Because something had been removed.

Someone had altered the records.

Entire sections were missing.

Dominic looked up.

“Who accessed this file?”

Marco swallowed.

“We don't know.”

That answer was unacceptable.

Dominic closed the folder.

Because now this was no longer just about a hidden child.

Someone had deliberately hidden Lily.

Someone had erased information inside his own organization.

And that meant one thing.

There was a traitor inside his mansion.

Dominic looked toward Lily.

The little girl was asleep beside her mother, still holding her rabbit.

She looked peaceful.

Completely unaware that her existence had just exposed a secret powerful enough to shake the entire Moretti empire.

Dominic lowered his voice.

“Find out who touched this file.”

Marco nodded.

“And what about Clara?”

Dominic looked at the woman who had spent four years hiding beneath his roof.

Then at the little girl who had knocked on his door.

“Until I know the truth…”

He paused.

“She stays here.”

Marco understood immediately.

The boss had made a decision.

A dangerous one.

A personal one.

Dominic Moretti had spent his entire life keeping people away.

But tonight…

he had allowed someone inside.

A woman.

A child.

A family he never knew existed.

And somewhere deep inside him, something he thought was dead began to wake up.

A feeling he had buried years ago.

A feeling called hope.
