The Door Beyond the West Wing · Chapter 3 of 6

Chapter 3

By My Life Story Editorial · Published · Updated

Dominic Moretti had built his entire life around one rule.

Never let anyone surprise you.

Surprises were dangerous.

Surprises meant someone had information you didn't.

And information was the most powerful weapon in the world.

Money could disappear.

Businesses could collapse.

Allies could turn into enemies.

But knowledge…

Knowledge could destroy kingdoms.

That was why Dominic had spent twenty years creating a system where nothing happened inside his organization without him knowing.

Every employee was checked.

Every visitor was monitored.

Every threat was investigated.

Nothing entered his world without his permission.

Nothing.

Except Lily.

A three-year-old girl had walked barefoot through his mansion, opened a door that nobody dared approach, and revealed a secret that had been hidden from him for years.

A secret named Clara Bennett.

And now Dominic knew one thing.

Someone had helped hide that secret.

Someone inside his own empire.

The next morning, the Moretti mansion looked different.

The staff moved quietly.

Security doubled.

Every hallway had another guard.

Every camera was checked.

Everyone felt the tension.

Nobody knew exactly what had happened.

But everyone knew something had changed.

Because Dominic Moretti was no longer simply running his business.

He was searching.

And when Dominic searched for answers…

people usually regretted hiding them.

Clara woke up again just after sunrise.

For a few seconds, she forgot where she was.

Then she saw the expensive room.

The unfamiliar ceiling.

The security guard outside the door.

And suddenly, everything returned.

She was still inside the Moretti mansion.

And Dominic Moretti knew about Lily.

Her heart tightened.

She turned quickly.

Her daughter was sleeping beside her.

One small hand wrapped around the stuffed rabbit.

Safe.

Alive.

That was all that mattered.

Clara gently touched Lily’s hair.

“I’m sorry,” she whispered.

She had promised herself that Lily would never be dragged into the dangerous world she escaped from.

But somehow…

the past had found them.

The door opened.

Clara immediately froze.

Dominic walked in.

He was different from the man everyone described.

At least for a moment.

He wasn't wearing his usual suit.

No expensive watch.

No intimidating expression.

Just a man carrying a cup of coffee.

Clara looked surprised.

“I thought you would send someone else.”

Dominic placed the coffee on the table.

“If I wanted someone else here, I wouldn't have come myself.”

Clara looked away.

“You should hate me.”

The words caught him off guard.

“Why would I hate you?”

“Because I lied.”

Dominic studied her.

“You hid a child inside my house.”

“Yes.”

“For four years.”

“Yes.”

“And you expect me not to have questions?”

Clara swallowed.

“I expect you to be angry.”

Dominic was silent.

Because the truth was…

he was angry.

Very angry.

But not at Clara.

Not completely.

He was angry because someone had made a mother so afraid that she believed hiding her child inside a dangerous man's mansion was safer than living normally.

That thought bothered him more than he wanted to admit.

“Who are you running from?” Dominic asked.

Clara's face changed.

The fear returned.

And Dominic noticed.

This wasn't fear of him.

This was old fear.

The kind that stayed with someone for years.

“Clara.”

She looked down.

“I can't tell you.”

Dominic's expression hardened.

“You can.”

“No.”

The answer surprised him.

People didn't refuse Dominic Moretti.

Not twice.

Not once.

But Clara did.

Because she wasn't trying to challenge him.

She was trying to protect Lily.

“I made a mistake coming here,” she whispered.

Dominic frowned.

“What?”

“I thought your mansion would keep her safe.”

A pause.

“But now that you know…”

She looked toward Lily.

“Everyone will know.”

Dominic understood immediately.

The secret wasn't simply that Lily existed.

The secret was that someone wanted Lily hidden.

And now that secret was exposed.

Later that morning, Dominic gathered his closest men in his private office.

Marco stood beside him.

Three other trusted members of his organization waited silently.

Dominic placed Clara's altered file on the desk.

“Someone changed this.”

Nobody spoke.

“Someone removed information.”

Still silence.

Dominic looked around the room.

“I want names.”

Marco stepped forward.

“We checked the access logs.”

“And?”

“One person accessed Clara's file six months ago.”

Dominic's eyes narrowed.

“Who?”

Marco hesitated.

“Anthony Voss.”

The room became colder.

Even Dominic looked surprised.

Anthony Voss.

A name from the past.

A man who had once been close to the Moretti family.

A man who had become an enemy.

Years ago, Dominic and Anthony had built businesses together.

They were brothers in everything except blood.

Until Anthony betrayed him.

He tried to take control.

He failed.

And Dominic removed him from his world.

But people like Anthony Voss didn't disappear.

They waited.

They planned.

They looked for weaknesses.

Dominic leaned back.

“Why would Anthony care about Clara?”

Marco looked serious.

“That is what we need to find out.”

“No.”

Dominic stood.

“That is what we need to stop.”

That afternoon, Dominic found Lily sitting in the mansion garden.

The security team had surrounded the area.

Not because she was a threat.

Because Dominic had ordered protection.

The little girl sat on the grass, coloring pictures.

When she saw him, she smiled.

“Mr. Moretti.”

Nobody called him that with kindness.

Usually, people said his name with fear.

But Lily said it like he was simply a person.

Dominic sat down nearby.

“What are you drawing?”

She held up the paper proudly.

“My family.”

Dominic looked at the picture.

Three people.

A woman.

A little girl.

And a tall man standing beside them.

Dominic pointed.

“Who is that?”

Lily looked confused.

“You.”

He almost laughed.

Almost.

“Why am I there?”

“Because you saved Mommy.”

The answer was simple.

Children were like that.

They didn't care about reputations.

They didn't care about rumors.

They cared about actions.

Dominic looked at the drawing again.

For years, people had told him he was dangerous.

A monster.

A man without a heart.

But this little girl had drawn him as someone who protected people.

And he didn't know why…

but that mattered.

That evening, Clara finally told Dominic part of the truth.

Not everything.

But enough.

Years ago, before Lily was born, Clara had worked as an assistant for a financial company connected to powerful families.

She discovered illegal activities.

Money laundering.

Secret transactions.

Names of people who could not afford to be exposed.

Including Anthony Voss.

“When he found out I knew,” Clara whispered, “he tried to make me disappear.”

Dominic's jaw tightened.

“You were pregnant?”

Clara nodded.

“I didn't know what to do.”

“So you came here.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

She looked at him.

“Because everyone feared you.”

Dominic said nothing.

“You were the one man Anthony would never attack directly.”

The truth hit differently.

His reputation had always been something dark.

Something he hated.

But for Clara…

it had been a shield.

“You should have told me.”

Clara looked away.

“I didn't know if you were better than him.”

That sentence hurt more than Dominic expected.

Because she was right.

She didn't know him.

She only knew his name.

His reputation.

The stories.

And maybe those stories weren't completely wrong.

That night, Dominic stood alone in his office.

Rain hit the windows.

The city lights reflected across the glass.

On his desk sat Lily's drawing.

He didn't know why he had kept it.

He should have thrown it away.

He should have focused on business.

On revenge.

On finding Anthony.

But instead…

he looked at the picture again.

A family.

Something he never thought he wanted.

A knock interrupted him.

Marco entered.

“Boss.”

Dominic looked up.

“What happened?”

Marco placed a phone on the desk.

“We intercepted a message.”

Dominic picked it up.

Only one sentence was written.

But it was enough.

I know the girl is alive.

Dominic's expression changed.

Marco continued.

“The message came from Anthony Voss.”

Silence.

Then Dominic asked:

“Does he know where she is?”

Marco looked at him.

“Yes.”

A dangerous calm filled the room.

Because Dominic Moretti finally understood.

This was no longer about a hidden secret.

This was a war.

And this time…

the thing he was protecting wasn't money.

It wasn't power.

It wasn't his empire.

It was a little girl who believed he was a good man.

Dominic closed his hand around the phone.

“Then Anthony made his biggest mistake.”

Marco waited.

Dominic looked toward the hallway where Lily was sleeping.

“He threatened my family.”

And for the first time in years…

the entire city would remember why people feared Dominic Moretti.
