The Door Beyond the West Wing · Chapter 5 of 6

Chapter 5

By My Life Story Editorial · Published · Updated

Dominic Moretti had spent years uncovering secrets.

That was what he did.

Secrets hidden in business contracts.

Secrets buried inside family histories.

Secrets protected by powerful people who believed money could erase the truth.

Dominic knew how to find what others tried to hide.

He knew how to follow the smallest clue.

A missing document.

A strange phone call.

A person who suddenly disappeared.

Nothing escaped him.

Nothing…

until Clara Bennett.

For four years, a woman and her daughter had lived under his roof without him knowing the full truth.

And the more Dominic learned, the more he realized something terrifying.

Clara had not been hiding from him.

She had been hiding because of him.

Because his world was dangerous.

Because his name attracted enemies.

Because people who wanted to hurt Dominic Moretti had found a way to reach him.

Through an innocent child.

And Dominic could not forgive himself for that.

The morning after the attempted attack, the mansion became a fortress.

Every camera was reviewed.

Every employee was questioned.

Every security report was analyzed.

Dominic sat in his office surrounded by files.

But there was one file that mattered more than all the others.

Clara Bennett.

He opened it again.

Her background.

Her employment history.

Her medical records.

Everything appeared normal.

Too normal.

And Dominic hated that.

Because he knew something about lies.

The best lies were not completely false.

They were built around pieces of truth.

Marco entered the office carrying another folder.

“You found something?”

Marco placed it on the desk.

“Maybe.”

Dominic looked up.

“Maybe isn't an answer.”

Marco understood the warning.

“We checked every person who had access to Clara's records.”

“And?”

“One name keeps appearing.”

“Anthony Voss.”

Marco nodded.

“But there's something else.”

Dominic opened the folder.

Inside were old documents.

Very old.

Documents connected to a company that had disappeared almost ten years earlier.

“What is this?”

Marco took a breath.

“Before Clara worked here, she worked for a financial group called Northbridge Holdings.”

Dominic frowned.

“That company belonged to…”

“Anthony Voss.”

Silence.

Dominic leaned back.

Now things were starting to connect.

Clara hadn't randomly crossed paths with Anthony.

She had been close to him.

Close enough to discover something dangerous.

“What did she find?”

Marco looked serious.

“We don't know yet.”

Dominic closed the folder.

“Then find out.”

Across the mansion, Clara sat beside Lily in the garden.

The little girl was drawing again.

This time, the picture was different.

There were four people.

Clara.

Lily.

Dominic.

And a small rabbit.

Clara looked at it carefully.

“You added Mr. Moretti.”

Lily nodded.

“He protects us.”

Clara smiled sadly.

“Does he?”

“Yes.”

The answer was immediate.

Children had a strange ability to see things adults ignored.

They didn't judge someone's past.

They watched what someone did.

And Lily had seen Dominic choose to protect her.

Not because he had to.

Because he wanted to.

“Mommy?”

Clara looked at her.

“Yes, sweetheart?”

“Will we stay here?”

The question broke something inside Clara.

Because for years, she had avoided making promises.

Promises could be broken.

Hope could hurt.

“I don't know.”

Lily looked down.

“But I like Mr. Moretti.”

Clara smiled.

“I know.”

“He's not scary.”

That made Clara laugh softly.

“No?”

Lily shook her head.

“He just looks scary.”

For the first time in days, Clara laughed.

A real laugh.

And she didn't notice Dominic standing nearby.

Listening.

He had come to speak with Clara.

But he stopped when he heard Lily.

“He just looks scary.”

Dominic almost smiled.

Almost.

Because Lily was right.

He had spent years making sure people saw him as dangerous.

He had built that image intentionally.

Fear had protected him.

But now a little girl had looked at him and somehow seen past it.

That was something Dominic didn't know how to handle.

When Clara noticed him, her smile disappeared.

“Dominic.”

He walked closer.

“Can we talk?”

She nodded.

They moved to a quieter area.

For several seconds, neither spoke.

Then Dominic asked:

“Why did you work for Anthony Voss?”

Clara's expression changed.

She knew this conversation was coming.

“I didn't know who he really was.”

Dominic studied her.

“Explain.”

“When I started working there, Northbridge Holdings looked legitimate.”

“And then?”

“Then I discovered things.”

“What things?”

Clara looked toward Lily.

“Things involving people who disappeared.”

Dominic's expression hardened.

“Witnesses?”

Clara nodded.

“Yes.”

“And you were one of them?”

“I was supposed to be.”

The words were quiet.

But they carried weight.

Dominic stared at her.

“What?”

Clara took a deep breath.

“Anthony found out I had copies of the records.”

“What records?”

“Proof.”

“Proof of what?”

Her eyes met his.

“Everything.”

That night changed everything.

Because Dominic finally understood.

Anthony wasn't after Lily.

Not originally.

Lily was only the last piece.

The final connection.

The reason Anthony wanted Clara found.

The records Clara had taken could destroy powerful people.

Including Anthony.

Maybe even people connected to Dominic.

“Where are the records now?”

Clara looked away.

“I destroyed them.”

Dominic didn't believe her.

“No.”

She looked at him.

“I did.”

“You don't destroy something that can protect your child.”

Clara became silent.

And Dominic knew.

She was hiding something.

“What did you do with them?”

Clara whispered:

“I gave them to someone I trusted.”

“Who?”

She hesitated.

Then answered:

“Your father.”

Dominic froze.

The world seemed to stop.

“My father?”

Clara nodded slowly.

“Luciano Moretti.”

The name carried history.

Dominic's father had been a powerful man.

A complicated man.

A man who had taught Dominic everything about survival.

But also a man who had left behind countless unanswered questions.

“My father knew?”

“Yes.”

“How?”

“Because he was investigating Anthony too.”

Dominic stared at her.

For years, he believed his father died leaving behind an empire.

Now he wondered if he had left behind a mystery.

Dominic spent the next several hours searching through his father's old records.

Records he had never touched.

Because some memories were painful.

His father had been many things.

A leader.

A businessman.

A difficult man.

But Dominic had never thought of him as someone who protected strangers.

Until now.

Inside an old locked drawer, Dominic found something unexpected.

A letter.

His father's handwriting.

The envelope had one name written on it.

Clara Bennett.

Dominic opened it carefully.

Inside was only one page.

But the words changed everything.

If you are reading this, then Anthony Voss has returned.

Protect the woman and her daughter.

They know the truth about what happened.

And Dominic… remember this.

The strongest men are not those who stand alone.

They are those who have something worth protecting.

Dominic read the final sentence again.

Something worth protecting.

For years, he thought his father had taught him strength meant never needing anyone.

But maybe he had misunderstood.

Maybe his father had been trying to teach him something else.

A sudden sound interrupted his thoughts.

His phone rang.

Marco.

Dominic answered immediately.

“What happened?”

Marco's voice was tense.

“Boss…”

“What?”

“We found Anthony.”

Dominic stood.

“Where?”

A pause.

Then Marco said:

“He isn't hiding.”

Dominic's expression darkened.

“What do you mean?”

“He wants you to find him.”

Silence.

Then:

“He sent another message.”

Dominic looked at the phone.

“What does it say?”

Marco answered.

“Bring Clara and Lily.”

A cold feeling moved through Dominic.

“And?”

Marco hesitated.

“Or he will reveal everything.”

Dominic's hand tightened.

Anthony Voss wanted a confrontation.

He wanted Clara.

He wanted Lily.

But most importantly…

he wanted Dominic to choose.

His empire.

Or his family.

Anthony thought he understood Dominic Moretti.

He thought love would make him weak.

He thought protecting a mother and child would destroy him.

But Anthony had made one mistake.

He had forgotten something.

Dominic Moretti had spent his entire life fighting for survival.

Now he had something worth fighting for.

And that made him more dangerous than ever.

That night, Dominic entered Lily's room.

She was sleeping peacefully.

He looked at the little girl who had unknowingly changed his entire life.

He never expected to become this person.

A protector.

A father figure.

Someone who cared.

But life had a strange way of finding people when they needed it most.

Dominic quietly whispered:

“I won't let anyone take you away.”

And for the first time in years…

he made a promise not because of duty.

Not because of power.

But because of love.
