Chapter 3

By My Life Story Editorial · Published · Updated

Vanessa Staal had made one mistake.

She believed fear made people predictable.

Alessandra knew better.

Fear had kept her married to Victor for four years.

Fear had kept Megan silent for months.

Fear had made Alessandra run through Manhattan carrying a thirty-two-pound child until her arms went numb.

But eventually fear became something else.

A line.

And once someone crossed it, there was nothing left to protect by staying quiet.

“We’re getting Megan,” Alessandra said.

Máximo stood across the library.

“Yes.”

She blinked.

“That was easier than expected.”

“You’re not going.”

“There it is.”

“We will recover her.”

“She asked for me.”

“Which is why sending you would be stupid.”

“She might have information.”

“Then she can tell us after she’s safe.”

Alessandra studied him.

“You already have a plan.”

“I had one before you finished arguing.”

“That is extremely irritating.”

“I’m told it’s one of my better qualities.”

The plan was deceptively simple.

Victor would call Vanessa and tell her Alessandra had agreed to exchange the supposed backup drive for Megan.

Meanwhile, Sofia would trace the call, Dante would identify the location, and Máximo’s people would retrieve Megan before Vanessa realized the exchange was fake.

Alessandra hated every second.

She sat beside Leo in Máximo’s kitchen while Rosa made pancakes shaped like bears.

Leo had decided Máximo’s townhouse was “the green house,” despite almost nothing inside being green.

“Chair Man coming?” Leo asked.

Alessandra closed her eyes.

“We need to stop calling him that.”

“Why?”

“Because his name is Máximo.”

Leo attempted it.

“Mack-see-mo.”

“Pretty good.”

“Chair Man easier.”

Máximo entered behind them.

“I agree.”

Alessandra turned.

He had changed into a charcoal suit. The bruise on his cheek looked darker.

“You’re encouraging him?”

“He’s efficient.”

Leo held up half a pancake.

“Want bear?”

Máximo accepted it without hesitation.

“Thank you.”

Alessandra watched him.

Twenty-four hours earlier, she had believed the most dangerous thing about Máximo Costa was the violence surrounding him.

Now she was beginning to suspect it was the gentleness he kept hidden.

Her phone buzzed.

Sofia.

WE HAVE MEGAN.

Alessandra stood so quickly her chair scraped backward.

“Where?”

Máximo checked his own phone.

“Safe.”

“I want to see her.”

“After Dante clears the location.”

“Máximo—”

“Twenty minutes.”

It took thirty-seven.

Megan was brought to a secure apartment two blocks away.

When Alessandra entered, Megan burst into tears.

“I’m sorry.”

Alessandra crossed the room and hugged her.

Megan clung to her.

“I didn’t know. I swear to God, Ally, I thought it was corporate espionage. They paid me for schedules, login times, which accounts you were reviewing. Then they showed me pictures of my girls leaving school.”

Alessandra pulled back.

“How long?”

“Four months.”

The betrayal hurt.

But the terror in Megan’s face was real.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“I was ashamed.”

“You should have told me.”

“I know.”

“You almost got Leo killed.”

Megan sobbed.

“I know.”

Alessandra stepped away.

Forgiveness was not instant.

Love did not erase consequences.

But neither did anger erase the fact that Vanessa had manipulated another mother by threatening her children.

“What do you know?” Alessandra asked.

Megan wiped her face.

“Vanessa isn’t hiding stolen money.”

“Then what is it?”

“She’s buying people.”

Máximo, standing near the door, became attentive.

Megan continued.

“Judges. Port officials. Detectives. City inspectors. Corporate executives. The shell companies aren’t destinations. They’re payment channels.”

Alessandra felt the pieces align.

“That explains the acquisitions.”

Megan nodded.

“She wants control of the East Coast distribution corridor.”

Máximo’s face hardened.

“That would require more than fifty million.”

“There’s more,” Megan said.

“How much?”

“I heard Vanessa say the first fifty was only Phase One.”

Alessandra sat down.

“Phase One of what?”

Megan looked at Máximo.

“Taking New York from you.”

The room became very quiet.

Máximo did not react outwardly.

But Alessandra had learned enough to recognize his anger.

Stillness.

That was how Máximo became dangerous.

Megan reached into her sweater.

Dante moved instantly.

“Hands where I can see them.”

She froze.

“It’s paper.”

She slowly removed a folded receipt.

“I stole this from Vanessa’s office.”

Alessandra opened it.

Numbers.

Dates.

Initials.

One sequence immediately caught her attention.

“M.C.”

Máximo glanced at it.

“Not me.”

“I know.”

She followed the payments.

Then she saw a name hidden in a vendor code.

COSTA DEVELOPMENT—CASPIAN NORTH.

Máximo’s own company.

Someone inside his organization had authorized payments.

“Who can approve these?” Alessandra asked.

“Three people,” Sofia answered.

“Máximo?”

“Yes.”

“Dante?”

“No.”

“Who?”

Sofia hesitated.

“Me.”

Alessandra looked at her.

“And?”

Máximo answered.

“My uncle.”

Rafael Costa had helped raise Máximo after his father died.

He had also built half the financial infrastructure supporting the Costa organization.

“He wouldn’t,” Máximo said.

It was the first denial Alessandra had heard from him that sounded emotional instead of logical.

She understood.

Betrayal hurt differently when it came from family.

“I’m not saying he did,” she said.

“You’re thinking it.”

“I’m thinking we follow evidence.”

Máximo stared at the receipt.

Then he called Rafael.

“Dinner tonight,” he said. “My house.”

He ended the call.

“That’s your plan?” Alessandra asked.

“I want to look at him.”

“You think you can tell whether he betrayed you by looking at him?”

“Yes.”

“Men.”

Máximo almost smiled.

That evening, Rafael Costa arrived carrying wine.

He was sixty-two, silver-haired, charming, and immediately warm toward Leo.

“So this is the famous guest.”

Leo hid behind Alessandra.

Rafael crouched.

“I brought cookies.”

Leo reconsidered his position on strangers.

Máximo watched every movement.

Dinner began politely.

It did not stay that way.

Halfway through the meal, Máximo placed Megan’s receipt beside Rafael’s plate.

His uncle looked down.

Then up.

“Where did you get this?”

“Does it matter?”

“Yes.”

“Answer the question you haven’t been asked yet.”

Rafael leaned back.

Alessandra watched his face.

Not guilt.

Recognition.

Fear.

“Máximo,” Rafael said quietly, “you don’t understand.”

“Then explain.”

Rafael looked at Alessandra.

“This is because of her?”

“This is because fifty million dollars moved through my companies without my knowledge.”

Rafael closed his eyes.

“I was trying to protect you.”

Máximo laughed without humor.

“By financing Vanessa Staal?”

“She had something.”

“What?”

Rafael said nothing.

Máximo slammed his palm against the table.

Leo jumped.

Alessandra immediately lifted him from his booster seat.

Máximo saw the child’s frightened face.

His anger vanished as quickly as it had appeared.

“I’m sorry, Leo.”

The apology stunned everyone.

Leo studied him.

“No bang table.”

“No,” Máximo said. “No bang table.”

Alessandra took Leo toward the doorway.

Then Rafael spoke.

“She has the recording.”

Máximo froze.

“What recording?”

“From seven years ago.”

Máximo slowly turned.

Rafael looked twenty years older.

“The night Matteo died.”

Máximo’s brother.

“What about it?”

“There was a call before the attack.”

“Whose call?”

Rafael looked at him.

“Mine.”

Silence consumed the room.

Rafael’s voice cracked.

“I told Matteo to change routes.”

Máximo stared.

“That route took him into the ambush.”

“I didn’t know.”

“You changed his route?”

“Vanessa told me the original road was compromised. She said she had intelligence. I believed her.”

Máximo’s face emptied.

“My brother died because you trusted Vanessa Staal.”

“Yes.”

“And you spent seven years hiding it.”

“I spent seven years knowing you would never forgive me.”

Máximo moved toward him.

Alessandra stepped between them.

Not because she thought she could physically stop Máximo.

Because Leo was watching.

“Not here.”

Máximo’s eyes dropped to her.

“Move.”

“No.”

“Alessandra.”

“Your nephew died that night. Leo is alive tonight. Don’t make him watch you become something he has to fear.”

That reached him.

Máximo stepped back.

Rafael covered his face.

“Vanessa found the recording last year. She threatened to give it to you unless I helped move money.”

“You should have told me.”

“I know.”

“You should have trusted me.”

“I was ashamed.”

The words echoed Megan’s.

Alessandra looked around the table.

Different worlds.

Same weapon.

Shame.

Vanessa had built an empire on convincing people that their worst mistake made them unworthy of help.

Alessandra suddenly understood how to destroy her.

“We stop hiding,” she said.

Máximo looked at her.

“What?”

“That’s her leverage. Secrets. Everybody she controls is hiding something.”

She pointed at the receipt.

“So we expose everything.”

Rafael stared.

“You don’t understand what that would cost.”

“Yes, I do.”

Alessandra thought about Victor.

Her failed marriage.

Her fear.

Her body.

Every insult she had once hidden because admitting it felt humiliating.

“Sometimes the truth costs less than keeping the secret.”

Máximo watched her for a long moment.

Then his phone rang.

Dante answered from across the room.

His expression changed.

“Máximo.”

“What?”

“The security team at the townhouse lost camera twelve.”

Máximo turned toward the monitor.

“Which camera?”

“The upstairs hallway.”

Alessandra’s blood turned to ice.

Leo was no longer beside her.

She had assumed Rosa had taken him to the playroom.

“Where’s Leo?”

Nobody answered.

Alessandra ran.

She reached the stairs first.

“Leo!”

The hallway was empty.

His bedroom door stood open.

The window was unlocked.

His gray blanket lay on the floor.

Alessandra made a sound Máximo would remember for the rest of his life.

Not a scream.

Something worse.

A mother realizing her child was gone.

Then a phone began ringing on the bed.

Not Alessandra’s.

A phone none of them had seen before.

Máximo answered.

Vanessa Staal’s voice came through the speaker.

“You should have taken the two million, Máximo.”

Alessandra grabbed the phone.

“Where is my son?”

Vanessa laughed softly.

“Bring me the accountant.”

Máximo’s face became lethal.

Vanessa continued.

“Midnight. Pier Thirty-Eight.”

The call ended.

Alessandra turned toward Máximo.

Her entire body was shaking.

“I’m going.”

Máximo reached for her.

She stepped back.

“No. You don’t get to tell me no this time.”

“I wasn’t going to.”

She stared at him.

Máximo picked Leo’s blanket off the floor.

His voice was quiet.

“We’re bringing him home.”
