Chapter 4

By My Life Story Editorial · Published · Updated

At 11:42 p.m., Alessandra stood inside an abandoned warehouse near the Hudson River wearing a wire beneath her sweater.

Máximo hated every part of the plan.

She knew because he had told her seventeen times.

“You stay within my line of sight.”

“Fine.”

“If Vanessa moves toward you, you step back.”

“Fine.”

“If anyone touches you—”

“I know.”

“No, you don’t.”

Alessandra turned.

“What exactly do you think I’m going to do? Challenge them to an accounting contest?”

“This isn’t funny.”

“I’m aware.”

Máximo stepped closer.

Rain hammered the warehouse roof.

His eyes were dark with exhaustion and anger.

“If this goes wrong—”

“It won’t.”

“You cannot know that.”

“No.”

She swallowed.

“But Leo needs me to believe it.”

Máximo looked away.

That was when Alessandra realized he was terrified.

Not of Vanessa.

Of failing another child.

She touched his wrist.

“Leo isn’t your nephew.”

His gaze snapped back.

“I know.”

“This isn’t seven years ago.”

“I know.”

“You don’t have to save the past tonight.”

His jaw tightened.

“I know.”

“Then save my son.”

Máximo covered her hand with his.

“I will.”

The warehouse lights came on.

Vanessa Staal entered through the opposite doors.

She was not what Alessandra expected.

No dramatic black dress. No obvious menace.

Vanessa looked like a woman who chaired charity boards and remembered everyone’s birthday.

Blond hair.

Cream coat.

Pearls.

Leo stood beside her holding the hand of a female guard.

He was crying silently.

“Mommy!”

Alessandra’s body moved before her mind.

Máximo caught her arm.

“Wait.”

Vanessa smiled.

“How touching.”

“Give me my son.”

“Come get him.”

Alessandra stepped forward.

Máximo did not stop her.

Vanessa’s eyes shifted toward him.

“You always did have a weakness for damaged things.”

Alessandra stopped.

Máximo’s expression became cold.

Vanessa smiled at Alessandra.

“Did he tell you what he is?”

“I have eyes.”

“Then you know men like him don’t rescue women like you.”

Alessandra almost laughed.

There it was.

The familiar weapon.

Make her feel too large.

Too ordinary.

Too damaged to deserve loyalty.

Victor had used it.

Her mother had used it.

Vanessa had simply dressed it in pearls.

“You don’t know anything about women like me,” Alessandra said.

Vanessa’s smile faded slightly.

“I know you ran.”

“I ran because my son was in danger.”

“You’re still running.”

“No.”

Alessandra looked at Leo.

“I stopped.”

Vanessa gestured.

The guard released Leo.

He ran.

“Mommy!”

Alessandra dropped to her knees.

Leo crashed into her arms.

She held him so tightly he protested.

“Mommy, squish.”

She laughed through tears.

“Sorry, baby.”

Máximo was beside them immediately.

He checked Leo’s face and arms.

“Are you hurt?”

Leo shook his head.

“Lady mean.”

Máximo looked at Vanessa.

“Yes.”

Vanessa’s expression changed.

“You think this is finished?”

“No,” Máximo said. “I think you just returned the only leverage keeping you alive.”

Vanessa smiled.

“Did I?”

The warehouse doors opened.

Men appeared above them on the catwalk.

Máximo’s security team raised their weapons.

Alessandra pulled Leo against her.

Vanessa lifted one hand.

“Nobody needs to die.”

“Then surrender,” Máximo said.

“To you?”

“To the evidence.”

Vanessa laughed.

“What evidence?”

Alessandra stood slowly.

“The evidence you spent months trying to destroy.”

Vanessa looked at her.

“You have nothing.”

“I have your payment network.”

“Numbers prove nothing.”

“Numbers prove everything when people are stupid enough to believe accountants only look at totals.”

Vanessa’s smile vanished.

Alessandra continued.

“Your shell companies share tax preparers. Your consulting vendors use sequential invoice numbers. Three of your charities were registered from the same IP address. And every payment to a public official was disguised as a service contract created within seventy-two hours of a property acquisition.”

Vanessa stared.

“You memorized that?”

“I was carrying a toddler for eighteen hours. I had time to think.”

Máximo almost smiled.

Vanessa looked toward the catwalk.

That was the signal.

Chaos erupted.

Máximo grabbed Alessandra and Leo, pulling them behind a concrete barrier as his people moved.

The confrontation was fast and terrifying.

No heroic speeches.

No glamorous violence.

Just noise, shouted commands, breaking glass, and people scrambling for cover.

Alessandra curled over Leo.

“Cover your ears.”

Máximo remained beside them.

“You need to go.”

“What about you?”

“I’m coming.”

“You better.”

He looked at her.

It was the wrong moment for the feeling that passed between them.

Or perhaps the only honest moment.

Dante reached them.

“Back exit.”

They moved.

Outside, federal vehicles flooded the pier.

Alessandra stopped.

Máximo did too.

“You called them?” he asked.

She shook her head.

Sofia emerged from behind another vehicle.

“I did.”

Máximo stared at her.

“You brought federal agents to my operation?”

“You told me we were exposing everything.”

“I did not mean inviting them to dinner.”

Sofia shrugged.

“Interpretation.”

Agents swarmed the warehouse.

Vanessa tried to escape through a side door.

She made it twenty feet.

A federal agent stopped her.

For the first time, Vanessa looked afraid.

Not because Máximo was approaching.

Because Alessandra was.

Vanessa stared at her.

“You think you won?”

“No.”

Alessandra held Leo.

“I think you lost.”

“You have no idea what you started.”

“Actually, I do.”

Alessandra looked toward the agents carrying boxes of financial records from the warehouse.

“You started it when you assumed nobody would notice fifty million dollars.”

Vanessa was taken away.

But the victory lasted less than ten minutes.

An agent approached Alessandra.

“Ms. Ferraro?”

“Yes?”

“Special Agent Noah Pierce.”

He showed identification.

“We received the report you sent.”

Relief flooded her.

“Good.”

“We need you and your son placed in federal protective custody immediately.”

Alessandra looked at Máximo.

Pier followed her gaze.

“And Mr. Costa will need to come with us separately.”

Máximo’s expression hardened.

“Am I under arrest?”

“Not currently.”

“Comforting.”

Pier looked at Alessandra.

“We have evidence Vanessa’s operation reaches further than we thought. Judges. Police. Customs officials.”

“We know.”

“There’s more.”

Pier lowered his voice.

“Someone accessed your original audit file two hours ago.”

Alessandra frowned.

“Vanessa?”

“No.”

“Then who?”

“Your credentials were used.”

“That’s impossible.”

“Apparently not.”

He handed her a printed access log.

Alessandra looked at the timestamp.

Then the device ID.

Her stomach dropped.

She recognized it.

The computer belonged to Victor.

Her ex-husband had not merely sold Leo’s photograph.

He had accessed her files.

And according to the log, he had downloaded everything.

“Where is Victor?” she whispered.

Máximo turned toward Dante.

Dante checked his phone.

Then went pale.

“He escaped.”

Alessandra stared.

“How?”

Dante looked at the federal agents surrounding them.

“Someone helped him.”

Special Agent Pierce’s phone rang.

He answered.

His expression changed.

“What do you mean?”

He listened.

Then looked directly at Máximo.

“The transport carrying Vanessa Staal never reached federal headquarters.”

Silence.

“What happened?” Alessandra asked.

Pier lowered the phone.

“The driver diverted.”

Máximo’s face became stone.

Vanessa was gone.

Victor was gone.

And somewhere between them was every piece of evidence Alessandra had risked her life to uncover.

Máximo looked at her.

“This war isn’t over.”

Alessandra tightened her arms around Leo.

“No.”

She looked toward the dark Manhattan skyline.

“But now I’m done running.”
