Staal Holdings occupied forty-three floors of glass and steel in Midtown Manhattan.
Alessandra had worked there for three months.
She knew the elevators.
The security doors.
The executive conference rooms.
Most importantly, she knew the accounting system.
Vanessa knew violence.
Máximo knew power.
Alessandra knew records.
And records remembered everything.
Special Agent Pierce met them three blocks away.
Máximo did not look pleased.
“You’re sure about him?” he asked Alessandra.
“No.”
Pier heard.
“Comforting.”
“You lost Vanessa once,” Máximo said.
Pier’s jaw tightened.
“One compromised driver.”
“One was enough.”
Alessandra stepped between them.
“Can we postpone the testosterone festival until after we rescue my ex-husband?”
Pier coughed.
Máximo looked offended.
“There is no festival.”
“Great. Then focus.”
The plan depended on Vanessa believing Alessandra had surrendered.
She entered Staal Holdings alone.
At least that was what the cameras showed.
Máximo’s team was positioned in adjacent buildings.
Federal agents covered the exits.
Pier had deliberately excluded most of his task force, using only personnel cleared through an independent internal investigation.
Alessandra entered the executive elevator.
Her hands shook.
She let them.
Courage did not mean calm.
It meant pressing the button anyway.
Floor forty-three.
The doors opened.
Vanessa waited.
Victor sat behind her.
His face was bruised.
Alive.
He looked at Alessandra and closed his eyes.
“You shouldn’t have come.”
“Nice to see you too.”
Vanessa smiled.
“Still making jokes.”
“Mostly when I’m terrified.”
“I appreciate honesty.”
“That makes one of us.”
Vanessa’s smile thinned.
“Where’s Máximo?”
“Not here.”
“You expect me to believe that?”
“No. I expect you to spend time wondering where he is.”
Vanessa walked closer.
“You’ve changed.”
“No.”
Alessandra looked at Victor.
“I just stopped apologizing.”
Vanessa gestured toward a laptop.
“The files.”
“I don’t have them.”
Victor looked at her.
Vanessa became still.
“Excuse me?”
“You stole them.”
“Then why are you here?”
“To give you something better.”
“What?”
“A way out.”
Vanessa laughed.
“You?”
“Yes.”
Alessandra placed a flash drive on the desk.
“Every payment I reconstructed. Every shell company. Every official. Every acquisition.”
Vanessa stared at the drive.
“You’re giving me your evidence?”
“I’m giving you a choice.”
“You think you have leverage?”
“I know I do.”
Alessandra took a breath.
“The files have already been distributed.”
That was true.
Sofia had sent encrypted copies to three federal offices, two law firms, and several journalists under timed-release agreements.
“If I don’t cancel the release within twenty minutes, everything becomes public.”
Vanessa’s face changed.
“You’re bluffing.”
“I’m an accountant. We don’t bluff. We document.”
Victor almost smiled.
Vanessa slapped Alessandra.
The impact turned her head.
Pain flashed across her cheek.
Victor surged against his restraints.
“Don’t touch her!”
Alessandra slowly faced Vanessa again.
“That didn’t change the deadline.”
Vanessa’s composure cracked.
“Call Máximo.”
“No.”
“Call him.”
“No.”
Vanessa reached toward Victor.
Alessandra’s stomach twisted.
Then the lights went out.
Máximo.
Emergency lights glowed red.
Vanessa spun.
The office doors locked automatically.
Alessandra moved.
She grabbed the heavy glass water pitcher from the conference table and smashed it against the laptop.
Vanessa screamed.
Victor stared.
“What are you doing?”
“Improvising!”
The door burst open.
Máximo entered with Dante.
Everything happened in seconds.
Vanessa tried to flee.
Dante intercepted her guard.
Máximo went directly to Alessandra.
“Are you hurt?”
“She slapped me.”
His expression became terrifying.
Alessandra grabbed his lapel.
“No.”
“What?”
“I know that face. No.”
“She hit you.”
“And she’s going to prison. That is significantly worse.”
Behind them, Victor laughed weakly.
“I always liked her.”
Alessandra looked over.
“You cheated on me.”
“Yeah. Bad phrasing.”
Máximo cut Victor loose.
Victor stumbled.
For one awkward moment, the two men faced each other.
Victor looked at Máximo.
“So you’re the guy.”
Máximo raised an eyebrow.
“What guy?”
“My kid calls you Chair Man.”
Dante turned away to hide a smile.
“This information will never leave this room,” Máximo said.
“It absolutely will,” Alessandra replied.
Federal agents flooded the floor.
Pier arrested Vanessa personally.
This time, nobody used a transport team Vanessa could influence.
Victor was taken into custody too.
Before agents led him away, he stopped in front of Alessandra.
“I’m going to prison.”
“Yes.”
“I deserve it.”
“Yes.”
He swallowed.
“Can I see Leo first?”
“No.”
Pain crossed his face.
Alessandra continued.
“Not tonight. Not while everything is chaos.”
He nodded.
“But when he’s older?”
“That depends on what you do next.”
Victor looked down.
“I was awful to you.”
“Yes.”
“I made you think—”
“Victor.”
He looked up.
“I don’t need the apology for me anymore.”
She swallowed.
“But Leo might need one someday. So become the kind of man who can give it honestly.”
Victor’s eyes filled.
He nodded.
Then agents took him away.
Vanessa stopped beside Alessandra.
“You think Máximo Costa gives you a happy ending?”
Alessandra looked at her.
“No.”
Vanessa smiled.
“Smart.”
“I give myself one.”
The smile vanished.
“Máximo is just someone I might choose to share it with.”
Máximo heard.
So did everyone else.
Alessandra refused to look at him until Vanessa was gone.
Then she turned.
He was staring at her.
“What?”
“You might?”
“This is not the time.”
“It seems like an excellent time.”
“Máximo.”
“You kissed me.”
“Are you seriously doing this in front of federal agents?”
Pier walked past.
“I’m not listening.”
Dante said, “I am.”
Máximo glared.
Dante left.
Alessandra laughed.
The sound surprised her.
After everything, she could still laugh.
Máximo approached.
“Come home with me.”
Her smile faded.
“Which home?”
He understood the question.
Not the safe house.
Not the townhouse where she had been protected because she was hunted.
Something else.
“Wherever you choose,” he said.
That answer mattered.
Alessandra touched his bruised cheek.
“I’m not becoming property.”
“I know.”
“You don’t claim me because I sat in your chair.”
“I know.”
“You don’t decide where I live.”
“I know.”
“You don’t decide what I wear, what I eat, how much I weigh, where I work—”
“Alessandra.”
“What?”
“I know.”
She stared.
Máximo smiled.
“Although I reserve the right to object to Count Chocula.”
“You ate half the box.”
“Allegedly.”
She kissed him.
This time the kiss was not uncertain.
It carried three weeks of terror, trust, anger, sleepless nights, arguments, pancakes, hidden grief, and the strange discovery that two people could meet in the worst moment of their lives and still become something good.
When they separated, Máximo rested his forehead against hers.
“There’s something else.”
She immediately became suspicious.
“What?”
“Rafael confessed everything.”
“To the federal investigators?”
“Yes.”
“What happens to him?”
“He’ll testify. He’ll probably serve time for the financial crimes.”
Máximo looked tired.
“But he gave them the original recording from seven years ago.”
“The one Vanessa used to blackmail him?”
“Yes.”
“And?”
“It proves Vanessa ordered the attack on Matteo.”
Alessandra closed her eyes.
Seven years.
Máximo had carried uncertainty for seven years.
“Then your brother gets the truth.”
“Yes.”
His voice broke slightly.
It was the first time she heard it.
She wrapped her arms around him.
Máximo held her.
No guards.
No commands.
No reputation.
Just a grieving brother finally reaching the end of a question that had haunted him for seven years.
Hours later, they returned to Westchester.
Leo was asleep on Rosa’s couch.
Máximo lifted him carefully.
The little boy woke.
“Chair Man?”
“Yes.”
“Mommy?”
“Right here,” Alessandra whispered.
Leo reached one hand toward each of them.
Máximo carried him upstairs.
Alessandra followed.
They tucked him into bed.
As they turned to leave, Leo spoke.
“Daddy?”
Both adults froze.
Leo’s eyes were barely open.
Alessandra’s heart hammered.
Máximo looked almost frightened.
“Leo?”
The boy pointed toward the door.
“Daddy coming?”
He meant Victor.
Alessandra sat beside him.
“Not tonight, sweetheart.”
“Where Daddy?”
She looked at Máximo.
Then back at her son.
“He made some bad choices. He has to fix them.”
Leo frowned.
“Chair Man stay?”
Máximo looked at Alessandra.
She smiled.
“If he wants to.”
Leo’s sleepy eyes shifted toward him.
“Stay.”
Máximo swallowed.
“All right.”
Leo closed his eyes.
Within seconds, he was asleep again.
Máximo remained beside the bed.
Alessandra touched his shoulder.
“You okay?”
“No.”
She smiled.
“Good no or bad no?”
“I don’t know.”
“That’s allowed.”
He looked down at Leo.
“I spent most of my life believing family was something blood gave you.”
“And now?”
Máximo reached for her hand.
“Now I think sometimes family asks for your chair.”
Alessandra laughed softly.
But downstairs, Máximo’s phone began ringing.
Sofia answered.
Minutes later, she appeared in the doorway.
Her expression was serious.
“The indictments are public.”
Máximo stood.
“How many?”
“Thirty-seven.”
Alessandra stared.
Sofia continued.
“Three judges. Eleven police officers. Four port officials. Corporate executives. Vanessa’s entire financial network.”
“And Máximo?” Alessandra asked.
Sofia hesitated.
“The federal government wants him to testify.”
Máximo’s expression closed.
Alessandra understood immediately.
Testifying would mean exposing his own world.
His businesses.
His alliances.
Possibly his crimes.
The war with Vanessa was finished.
But Máximo now faced a different choice.
Protect the empire he had built.
Or become the man Leo believed he already was.
