Chapter 4

Finding Vittorio Salvi took thirty-six hours.

Finding the traitor inside Alessandro’s house took considerably less.

Marcus entered the study shortly before midnight.

“We have a problem.”

Alessandro closed the file he was reading.

“Salvi?”

“We found three locations associated with him.”

“Then why are you worried?”

“Because he knew Elena was here.”

Alessandro remained still.

“That photograph could have been taken before she entered employment.”

“It was taken three weeks ago.”

“How do you know?”

Marcus placed the image on the desk.

“Construction sign behind her. Went up nineteen days ago.”

Alessandro studied it.

Elena had left the estate only four times in three months.

Grocery store.

Doctor.

Church.

A children’s clothing shop.

All accompanied by a Moretti driver.

“Who knew her schedule?”

“Household management. Security detail. Kitchen administrator.”

“Names.”

Marcus gave him six.

Alessandro knew every one.

One had worked for him for twelve years.

Another had attended Isabella’s funeral.

Betrayal rarely came from strangers.

That was why it hurt.

They created a test.

Six employees received six different pieces of false information about where Elena and Mia would supposedly be taken the following morning.

At 8:15, Marcus received confirmation.

A Salvi surveillance vehicle appeared outside the location given to only one person.

Paul Danner.

Assistant household administrator.

Seven years at the Moretti estate.

Married.

Two children.

A man Alessandro had once personally helped after his son needed surgery.

Paul was brought to the Vault.

He began lying immediately.

Alessandro allowed it for three minutes.

Then Marcus placed photographs on the table.

Payments.

Messages.

Contact records.

Paul collapsed.

“I didn’t know he killed Mrs. Moretti.”

Alessandro said nothing.

“I swear.”

“You sold my family’s movements.”

“I needed money.”

“You told Salvi when Elena left the estate.”

Paul cried.

“I didn’t know he wanted the little girl.”

“You knew enough.”

Alessandro stood.

Paul recoiled.

“Please.”

Alessandro looked at him.

Once, that plea would not have mattered.

Then he remembered Elena telling him what Isabella had chosen.

Evidence.

Exposure.

Not another corpse.

“Marcus.”

“Yes?”

“Police.”

Paul stared.

“What?”

Alessandro stepped away.

“Turn everything over.”

Marcus understood how difficult the order was.

“Done.”

Paul began sobbing.

Alessandro left.

In the hallway he found Elena.

She had heard enough.

“You didn’t kill him.”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because you were right.”

She searched his face.

“That sounds painful for you to admit.”

Despite everything, Alessandro almost smiled.

“It is.”

For the first time, Elena smiled back.

Only briefly.

Then a crash echoed upstairs.

Both turned.

Alessandro was moving before Elena screamed Mia’s name.

They reached the nursery.

A vase lay shattered.

Sophia cried.

Mia stood beside the crib.

But she was not alone.

A woman in a nurse’s uniform had one hand around Mia’s wrist.

Alessandro recognized her as temporary pediatric staff.

Except Marcus had not approved temporary personnel.

The woman reached inside her pocket.

Alessandro crossed the room with terrifying speed.

He caught her wrist before she produced whatever she was reaching for.

Security arrived seconds later.

The woman was restrained.

A syringe fell to the carpet.

Elena pulled Mia into her arms.

Sophia screamed.

Alessandro stood over the intruder.

“Who sent you?”

She smiled.

“Vittorio says hello.”

Marcus dragged her away.

Alessandro turned.

Elena was shaking violently.

Mia had gone silent.

That frightened him more.

He crouched.

“Mia.”

She stared at the floor.

“Look at me.”

Her eyes rose.

“Did she hurt you?”

Mia shook her head.

“You sure?”

Another nod.

Then she whispered, “I dropped Benny.”

Alessandro saw the rabbit near the crib.

He picked it up.

Mia reached for it.

He handed it back carefully.

She hugged it.

Then, unexpectedly, wrapped her other arm around Alessandro’s neck.

He froze.

The room went silent.

Mia clung to him.

“You came.”

Three words.

That was all.

Alessandro closed his eyes.

Then slowly placed one arm around the child.

“Yes.”

Mia whispered into his shoulder.

“You stayed.”

Elena covered her mouth.

And Alessandro Moretti, a man whose reputation had been built on making others fear him, felt his eyes burn.

He lifted Mia.

Carried her toward Elena.

“She’s safe.”

“For now,” Elena whispered.

He looked at her.

“No. Not for now.”

His expression hardened.

“Always.”

The attack changed everything.

Federal investigators were contacted.

Not local police.

Alessandro knew too many city officials could be compromised.

Through attorneys, the ledger reached a federal organized crime task force.

The evidence was overwhelming.

But Salvi remained missing.

The task force wanted time.

Alessandro hated time.

Every hour Vittorio remained free was an hour Sophia and Mia remained vulnerable.

Three days passed.

The Moretti estate became a fortress.

Mia adapted better than the adults.

She ate pancakes with Sophia.

Built block towers in Alessandro’s study.

Colored purple stars across documents Marcus should never have left within reach.

One afternoon, Alessandro found a crayon drawing on his desk.

Four stick figures.

A tall man.

A woman.

A little girl.

A baby.

He stared.

Mia climbed onto the chair opposite.

“That’s us.”

Alessandro looked at the drawing.

“Where’s Benny?”

She pointed.

A small brown shape beside her.

“Of course.”

“And that’s you.”

She pointed to the tall figure.

“Why am I so large?”

“You keep the bad people away.”

Elena appeared in the doorway.

Her eyes went to the drawing.

A complicated expression crossed her face.

Mia ran toward her.

“Mommy, Sandro looks funny.”

“He does.”

Alessandro raised an eyebrow.

Elena smiled.

Then Mia left to show Sophia’s nanny another picture.

Silence settled.

Alessandro held the drawing.

“She put us together.”

Elena folded her arms.

“She’s three.”

“She knows what family looks like.”

The word hung between them.

Elena looked away first.

“You’re grieving.”

“So are you.”

“That doesn’t mean—”

“I didn’t say it meant anything.”

“No. But you looked like you wanted it to.”

Alessandro stood.

“Elena.”

She shook her head.

“I can’t become another person you feel responsible for.”

“That isn’t what this is.”

“Then what is it?”

He had no answer.

She laughed softly.

“That’s what I thought.”

She turned.

Alessandro stopped her.

“I don’t know.”

Elena looked back.

“I don’t know what this is.”

He glanced toward the hallway where Mia’s laughter could be heard.

“I know my daughter smiles when your daughter enters the room.”

He looked at Elena.

“I know this house stopped feeling like a mausoleum after you arrived.”

Her expression softened.

“And I know that when someone threatened you, I felt something that had nothing to do with obligation.”

Elena’s eyes glistened.

“But I’m not asking you for anything.”

“Good.”

“Why good?”

“Because I don’t know if I’m ready.”

Alessandro nodded.

“Neither do I.”

For the first time, neither needed to pretend.

Then Marcus entered.

His face erased the moment.

“We found Salvi.”

Alessandro turned.

“Where?”

Marcus placed a photograph on the desk.

An abandoned church outside the city.

But underneath was something worse.

“He sent us a message.”

“What message?”

Marcus played a recording.

Vittorio’s voice filled the room.

“Bring me the original drive tomorrow night, Alessandro. Come alone.”

A pause.

“Or I release evidence proving one of your own men arranged Isabella’s death.”

Alessandro went still.

The recording continued.

“And I promise you this—the next child who wakes after midnight won’t have anyone coming to comfort her.”

Elena’s face went white.

Alessandro stopped the recording.

His expression became colder than she had ever seen.

Vittorio had just chosen the battlefield.

He had also made the mistake of assuming Alessandro would arrive alone.
