Chapter 6

By My Life Story Editorial · Published · Updated

The city woke to scandal.

Federal raids struck eleven properties before dawn.

Three warehouses closed.

Dozens of victims were recovered and placed into protective services.

Financial records exposed officials, businessmen, police officers, and criminal intermediaries who had spent years believing Vittorio Salvi’s network could never be touched.

By afternoon, news stations carried the arrest.

They did not mention Alessandro’s cooperation.

His attorneys ensured that.

The Moretti name already attracted enough attention.

Inside the estate, however, the victory looked very different.

It looked like Sophia throwing oatmeal at Mia.

Mia laughing.

Elena pretending she was annoyed.

Alessandro entering the breakfast room and discovering mashed banana on a six-thousand-dollar dining chair.

He stared at it.

Mia followed his gaze.

“Sophia did it.”

Sophia slapped the table happily.

Alessandro looked at his daughter.

“Clearly a criminal mastermind.”

Elena covered a smile.

“You’re not funny.”

“I’m told otherwise.”

“By whom?”

“No one brave enough to say it publicly.”

Mia giggled.

Life returned quietly.

Not all at once.

There were nightmares.

Elena had them.

So did Alessandro.

One night, she found him sitting alone in the nursery after Sophia fell asleep.

The silver-framed photograph of Isabella rested upright beside the crib.

Elena stopped.

“I’ve never seen that picture.”

Alessandro looked at it.

Isabella stood in the garden holding newborn Sophia.

Sunlight in her hair.

Laughing at something outside the frame.

“I kept it face down.”

“Why?”

“Because looking at her felt like betrayal.”

Elena sat nearby.

“Betrayal of whom?”

“Her.”

“That doesn’t make sense.”

“I survived.”

“So did Sophia.”

“I was the target.”

Elena understood.

“You think she died because of you.”

“She did.”

“No.”

Alessandro looked sharply at her.

“Vittorio ordered you killed. Isabella crossed the courtyard. That isn’t the same as you killing her.”

“If I had left that life sooner—”

“If Daniel had never gambled, maybe he’d be alive. If I had left him the first time he hurt me, maybe Mia would never remember hiding in a bathroom.”

She swallowed.

“But there is no end to that road.”

Alessandro said nothing.

Elena touched the edge of Isabella’s picture.

“You can honor the dead without becoming buried beside them.”

He looked at her.

“Where did you learn that?”

“I’m still learning.”

Weeks became months.

Vittorio remained in federal custody.

Elena testified before a grand jury.

Alessandro arranged protection but did not interfere.

Daniel’s evidence helped dismantle a network far larger than anyone expected.

For Elena, the hardest revelation came from Isabella’s notes.

Daniel had intended to leave Vittorio.

He had arranged protective documents for Elena and Mia.

He had even written a letter.

Federal investigators recovered it from a safe-deposit box.

Elena read it alone.

Then again beside Alessandro.

Daniel did not excuse what he had done.

He admitted hurting her.

Admitted frightening Mia.

Admitted becoming the person he once promised never to become.

His final lines were simple.

I don’t deserve forgiveness. I only hope the last thing I do gives you both the chance to live without fear.

Elena cried for an hour.

Alessandro remained beside her.

He did not tell her to forgive Daniel.

He did not tell her to hate him.

He simply stayed.

Months earlier, that would have seemed insignificant.

Now they both knew better.

Mia’s fourth birthday arrived in spring.

The estate transformed.

Balloons filled the garden.

Kitchen staff baked a rabbit-shaped cake.

Marcus ordered a security sweep so extensive Elena accused him of preparing for a presidential visit.

“The guest of honor is four,” she told him.

Marcus replied, “She has breached restricted areas more successfully than trained adults.”

Mia wore a red dress.

Benny wore a matching ribbon.

Sophia toddled behind her.

Alessandro gave Mia a new stuffed rabbit.

Mia stared at it.

Then at Benny.

“You don’t have to replace him,” Alessandro said quickly.

Mia hugged the new rabbit.

“This is Benny’s brother.”

Alessandro nodded solemnly.

“Of course.”

“What’s his name?”

She thought.

“Tony.”

Marcus choked on his coffee.

Alessandro looked amused.

That afternoon Elena watched him carry Sophia on one arm while Mia sat on his shoulders.

Something changed inside her.

She had spent years learning that powerful men were dangerous.

Daniel had taught her that love could become possession.

Vittorio had taught her that money could make cruelty invisible.

Alessandro was not innocent.

She knew what world he came from.

She knew what he had done before she met him.

But she had also watched him choose differently when choosing differently cost him something.

That mattered.

That night, after the party ended, Elena found Alessandro in the garden.

“You disappeared.”

“So did you.”

“I was looking for you.”

He turned.

“Why?”

Her courage nearly failed.

Then she remembered how many years fear had already stolen.

“I don’t want to be your employee forever.”

Alessandro’s expression became unreadable.

“You want to leave?”

“No.”

He waited.

“I want to stop pretending I don’t feel something.”

Silence.

She almost laughed nervously.

“You could help me here.”

“I’m trying not to frighten you.”

“You’re failing.”

That startled a smile from him.

Elena stepped closer.

“I loved Daniel once.”

“I know.”

“I hated him too.”

“I know.”

“I still grieve him.”

“You should.”

She studied Alessandro.

“You really mean that?”

“Yes.”

“What about Isabella?”

“I love her.”

Present tense.

Elena’s eyes softened.

“Good.”

He frowned.

“Good?”

“I don’t want a man capable of switching off love because someone died.”

Alessandro looked at her for a long time.

Then said, “I don’t know how to do this.”

“Neither do I.”

“I’m not an easy man.”

“That may be the least surprising thing you’ve ever said.”

His mouth curved.

Elena reached for his hand.

Not because he asked.

Because she chose to.

Alessandro looked down at their joined fingers.

Then back at her.

“May I kiss you?”

The question mattered more than the kiss.

Elena smiled.

“Yes.”

He kissed her gently.

No urgency.

No claim.

Only possibility.

From an upstairs window came a tiny voice.

“Mommy!”

They pulled apart.

Mia had pressed her face to the glass.

“Sandro kissed you!”

Elena covered her face.

Alessandro laughed.

Actually laughed.

Mia shouted, “Do it again!”

Marcus appeared at another window, caught the scene, and immediately disappeared.

Elena groaned.

“The entire estate will know by breakfast.”

“They already know.”

“How?”

“My security staff notices everything.”

She stared.

“You told them?”

“No.”

“They’re simply nosy.”

She laughed.

And in the garden where Isabella once walked, Alessandro allowed himself to imagine something he had forbidden for nearly two years.

A future.
