The Garden Isabella Left Behind · Chapter 5 of 6

Chapter 5

By My Life Story Editorial · Published · Updated

Alessandro had spent most of his adult life believing fear was the most reliable form of power.

Fear kept enemies predictable.

Fear kept men loyal.

Fear kept negotiations short.

Isabella had spent years trying to convince him that fear only worked until somebody became more afraid of losing what they loved than of losing themselves.

The night Vittorio Salvi demanded the drive, Alessandro finally understood.

He was no longer afraid for himself.

He was terrified of failing two little girls who expected him to stay.

The abandoned church stood eighteen miles beyond the city.

Federal agents wanted Alessandro wired.

Marcus wanted twenty armed men in the woods.

Elena wanted him not to go.

“You are walking into exactly what he wants.”

Alessandro adjusted his cuff.

“He wants the drive.”

“No. He wants you angry.”

Elena stood in the dressing room doorway.

“You’re more dangerous when you’re angry, and he knows that.”

“I’m always dangerous.”

“This isn’t funny.”

“I wasn’t joking.”

She crossed the room.

“Mia thinks you’re coming back.”

Alessandro stopped.

Elena’s eyes filled.

“She drew another picture.”

She handed him folded paper.

This time five figures appeared beneath a crooked yellow sun.

Alessandro.

Elena.

Mia.

Sophia.

And a woman drawn above them with wings.

He stared.

“Who is that?”

“Isabella.”

His throat tightened.

“Mia said Sophia needed her mommy in the picture.”

Alessandro folded it carefully.

“I will come back.”

“You can’t promise that.”

“Yes, I can.”

“How?”

“Because I have something I never had before.”

“What?”

“A reason not to choose revenge.”

At 11:40 p.m., Alessandro entered the church carrying a duplicate flash drive.

Vittorio stood before the ruined altar.

Older than Alessandro remembered.

Gray at the temples.

Still smiling like a man who mistook cruelty for intelligence.

“Alessandro.”

“Vittorio.”

“You look tired.”

“You look dead.”

Salvi laughed.

“Still charming.”

Four men emerged from the shadows.

Alessandro showed no reaction.

“You said alone.”

“I lied.”

“So did I.”

Outside, federal tactical teams moved silently into position.

Vittorio’s smile weakened.

“You brought police?”

“No.”

“Federal agents?”

Alessandro said nothing.

Salvi laughed again.

“Isabella would be disappointed.”

The name nearly broke Alessandro’s control.

Nearly.

Vittorio saw it.

“She was always too curious.”

Alessandro’s hands curled.

“She begged?”

“No.”

Vittorio smiled.

“That disappointed me.”

Alessandro took one step forward.

Then stopped.

Inside his jacket, Mia’s drawing pressed against his chest.

Somebody stays.

Vittorio expected violence.

He needed Alessandro to attack.

Instead Alessandro said, “Tell me why you killed her.”

Salvi’s expression changed.

“What?”

“You wanted me here.”

“I wanted the drive.”

“You also wanted to talk.”

Alessandro tilted his head.

“Men like you always do.”

Salvi’s vanity won.

“Your wife discovered things that didn’t concern her.”

“She discovered your network.”

“She thought she could save everyone.”

“And Daniel?”

“Coward.”

Elena’s dead husband.

“He copied your ledger.”

“He stole from me.”

“So you killed him.”

Vittorio shrugged.

“Cars crash.”

Every word transmitted through Alessandro’s hidden microphone.

Not because Vittorio was stupid.

Because arrogant men believed confession was power when they thought nobody could touch them.

“You ordered Isabella killed.”

“I ordered you killed.”

Salvi smiled.

“She crossed the courtyard first.”

For one second, Alessandro saw red.

He moved.

Vittorio’s men reached for weapons.

Then Alessandro stopped himself.

A gun appeared at his chest.

Salvi grinned.

“There he is.”

Alessandro slowly raised his hands.

“You think restraint makes me weak?”

“I think grief made you weak.”

“No.”

Alessandro looked directly at him.

“Grief taught me the difference between punishment and justice.”

Lights exploded through the stained-glass windows.

“Federal agents! Drop your weapons!”

Chaos followed.

Vittorio’s men surrendered.

One ran.

He was caught outside.

Vittorio grabbed Alessandro and pressed a weapon beneath his jaw.

“Everybody back!”

Agents stopped.

Vittorio dragged Alessandro toward the side exit.

“You ruined everything.”

Alessandro remained calm.

“No. Isabella did.”

Vittorio’s face twisted.

“She’s dead.”

“And you’re still losing to her.”

Vittorio struck him.

Alessandro staggered.

Then Marcus appeared near the doorway.

Vittorio turned.

That half-second was enough.

Alessandro disarmed him.

Not with rage.

With precision.

Vittorio hit the floor.

Alessandro stood above him.

For years, he had imagined finding the man responsible for Isabella’s death.

In every version, that man died.

Slowly.

Painfully.

Personally.

Now Vittorio looked up.

“Do it.”

Alessandro stared.

“Do what?”

“Be who you are.”

Alessandro thought of Sophia sleeping peacefully.

Mia offering him Benny.

Elena demanding that he become better than vengeance.

Isabella writing a warning instead of ordering a murder.

He stepped away.

“No.”

Vittorio looked almost frightened by that answer.

Alessandro turned toward the agents.

“He’s yours.”

Handcuffs closed around Vittorio Salvi’s wrists.

And for the first time since Isabella died, Alessandro walked away from the man responsible without becoming another version of him.

At 2:06 a.m., he returned home.

The estate was quiet.

Elena stood waiting in the entrance hall.

She did not speak.

Neither did he.

Then she crossed the marble floor and wrapped her arms around him.

Alessandro froze.

Only for a second.

Then held her.

“You came back,” she whispered.

“I promised.”

A tiny voice came from the staircase.

“Sandro?”

They turned.

Mia stood there in pajamas holding Benny.

Marcus’s guard followed several steps behind, clearly defeated by the child.

“She heard the car,” he explained.

Mia ran.

Alessandro crouched.

She threw herself against him.

“You stayed.”

He closed his eyes.

“Yes.”

Sophia began crying upstairs.

Mia immediately lifted her head.

“Baby.”

Elena laughed through tears.

“You’re supposed to be asleep.”

“She needs me.”

Together, the three of them walked upstairs.

In the nursery, Alessandro lifted Sophia from her crib.

She cried against his chest.

Mia reached for her hand.

Elena stood beside him.

Slowly, Sophia calmed.

Alessandro looked around the room.

A year ago, he had stood here believing his family had ended.

Now a widowed housekeeper and a three-year-old carrying a broken rabbit had somehow walked into the ruins.

They had not replaced Isabella.

Nobody could.

Instead they had taught the house how to breathe around her absence.

Later, after both children slept, Elena remained beside the window.

Alessandro joined her.

“Vittorio confessed enough.”

“What happens now?”

“Trial.”

“And the people he hurt?”

“The ledger identified warehouses and accounts. Federal teams moved tonight.”

Elena released a breath.

“Isabella did it.”

“Yes.”

“So did Daniel.”

Alessandro nodded.

“He tried to make one good decision.”

Elena wiped a tear.

“He wasn’t only what he became.”

“No.”

She looked at Alessandro.

“Neither are you.”

The words unsettled him.

“Careful.”

She smiled softly.

“Is that a threat?”

“No.”

He looked at her.

“It’s probably gratitude.”

“Sounds painful.”

“It is.”

This time she laughed.

And Alessandro realized he wanted to hear that sound again.
